ABB Indonesia Transformer Services (TRES) helps Indonesia Power provide more reliable power supply

Indonesia Power as the owner of Suralaya power plant, performed an assessment on the GSU transformer units 1 and 2, and found the HV (High Voltage) Bushings were reaching end of life. End of 2014, Indonesia Power selected ABB to replace the 500kV bushings.

The Suralaya power plant generates more 3000 MW of power through four 400 MW generating units and three 600 MW ge-nerating units which make them as one of the largest power plant in Indonesia. This power plant is part of Java – Bali backbone of power system network. Any disruption in smooth flow of power have huge impact on stability of networks.

The GSU transformer are main link between generating unit and the trans-mission network, hence GSU transformer must be highly reliable. Few years back during regular inspection it was observed that bushings is reaching its end of life, hence Indonesia Power decided to re-place the bushings of its Mitsubishi make 470 MVA 500 kV / 28 kV GSU having NGK make 500 kV bushings, with ABB bushings.

ABB as a leading supplier of bushings offered state of art, high quality and high reliable bushing, and offered one stop solution including on site replacement services ABB transformer service (TRES)

offering. The TRES teams worked closely with factory and customers to under-stand the requirement and provided cus- tomized solutions. The contract period was 24 weeks. To meet the schedule requirement, bushings were air freighted from Sweden factory and extensive plan-ning was done for site works. As the work need to be done outdoor, the team also consi-dered the rainy session and its implication to make sure the project is completed in a timely manner. With the replaced bushing reliability of the trans-former is assured.

Steering through challenging markets

“Our Q3 results reflect the challenging markets we face. Short-cycle demand in oil and gas, China and the US was down and the orders compare to a strong Q3 2014 when we won a record amount of large orders in Power Systems and Process Automation,” said CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer. “However, building on our Next Level strategy, we were able to win key customer orders and to deliver margin accretion as well as a positive book-to-bill ratio in spite of significant market head-winds,” he said. “We delivered a 50 basis point improvement in operational EBITA margin and higher operational earnings per share by building on our strong fo-cus on execution, restructuring and cost measures as well as the Power Systems ‘step change’ program.”

“We have launched Stage 2 of our Next Level strategy aimed at accelerat-ing ABB’s transformation,” Spiesshofer said. “Markets are expected to remain challenging well into 2016. In this envi-ronment we continue to drive “self-help” by focusing on growth opportunities in a disciplined way while mitigating the im-pact of market headwinds through ca-pacity adjustments, productivity mea-sures and cost reductions. Executing our 1,000- day white-collar productiv-ity and ongoing restructuring programs

is pivotal,” he said. “We kicked off the announced strategic portfolio review of the future Power Grids division and are on track to complete it in 2016, as previ-ously stated.

“Overall, we will continue to drive the execution of our Next Level strategy to deliver on profitable growth and sustain-able value creation in challenging mar-kets,” he said.

Short-term outlook Macroeconomic and geopolitical developments are signaling a mixed pic-ture with continued uncertainty. Some macroeconomic signs in the US remain positive and growth in China is expected to continue, although at a slower pace

than in 2014. The market remains im-pacted by modest growth in Europe and geopolitical tensions in various parts of the world. Current oil prices and foreign exchange translation effects are expected to continue to influence the company’s re-sults.

Organized data means better decision makingIf you know your past you can improve your future

It’s hard to visualize a river of data, but that is what power utilities and indus-tries face as power systems move into the digital age. They must be ready to capture and analyze this data, because system information is now as important to a power system as transformers, cables and switches.

In its white paper, ‘Managing big data for smart grids and smart meters,’ IBM draws the data-volume problem this way: “Going from one meter reading a month to smart meter readings every 15 minutes works out to 96 million reads per day for every million meters. The result is a 3,000-fold increase in data that can be overwhelming if not properly managed.”

The upside of a data river is the poten-tial to make power systems much more efficient, and enable new services and products for customers - from forecast-ing demand to shaping usage patterns, preventing outages, optimizing unit commitment and more.

In order to function, however, data-en-hanced power systems need collection, refinement and visualization software ca-pable of handling large quantities of real time information generated by smart de-vices embedded in the network.

And that is what MicroSCADA Pro His-torian does: provide accurate, up-to-the-minute views of primary processes, so

Collecting and organizing a river of data in a simple and meaningful way is the job of

ABB’s MicroSCADA Pro Historian software, which tracks everything that happens in

a power system and provides powerful tools for data analysis and trending.

decisions are based on facts, rather than “gut feelings.” Historian catches com-plete data streams for analysis, can store more data for much longer time periods, and has the capacity to spot changes in power system data immediately.

Event-based logging collects all data changes to ensure nothing is missed, while efficient compression also saves disk space. The data river can be refined into meaningful information in visualized formats comprising graphs, trends and numerical reports. This gives power sys-tem operators a clear view of the situation in primary processes, so they can make optimal use of their power and primary equipment.

Historian’s intuitive, visual format fea-tures customized templates, displays and drag and drop functionality that supports flexible, easy-to-understand reporting and trending. Operators can readily uti-lize the full palette of Historian functions, gathering and organizing data without having to engineer or order new displays from the vendor.

Historian also has the capacity to pro-duce customized reports and statistics that can be interpreted across different company functions, such as customer
