The Gilbrea Centre is proud to be part of a new initiative to help reduce social isolation among seniors in Hamilton. Seven organizations are collaborating through individual projects under the Hamilton Seniors Isolation Impact Plan (HSIIP). HSIIP will target neighbourhoods where the risk of social isolation among seniors is greatest. Most at-risk seniors are those who live alone, have disabilities or poor health, low income, language barriers or reduced access to services. More than $2 million in federal funding is being invested in these projects through the New Horizons for Seniors Program.
The Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, announced the project on June 11, 2016.

MEMBER RESEARCH
Associate Member Jim Gladstone has released a video entitled “Engaging Grandparents and Child Welfare Workers in Kinship Care: A Primer.” This video features three grandparents who have been raising their grandchildren and three child welfare workers who have been involved with grandparents in kinship care. The main topics that are addressed in the video include the type of tensions experienced by both kinship care grandparents and child welfare workers, what grandparents and workers value in their relationships with one another, and the way that workers use power in these relationships.
