There are two routes we're taking, and I'd love to hear your feedback and comments on all of it. Some events are more popular than others. Once the final attendance counts are in it's pretty clear which ones piqued everyone's interest and which ones couldn't get people off the couch. The events I plan are generally ones I find interesting, and I'm sometimes surprised others don't as well. I've started including a 'no' option with our online RSVP system - please give it a shot. If you love the event but just can't make it let us know. If the event doesn't look interesting let us know why. I know not every event will be as intriguing as last year's submarine tours (the recent popularity record) but the more insight we have into 'why' something isn't popular the better we can do. If you put in the effort to provide the feedback we'll spend the time to listen. Advertising and communication isn't glamorous but it's certainly a necessity. Our website is good (it has all our section information and is both regularly updated and complete), but few people check websites frequently to keep abreast of current activities. We've tried Facebook without much success. I believe that most people prefer to hear about events via our email newsletter. Is this the case for you? If so, would an improved ASME-SD email system help you? Our current system usually works, but easier subscribe/unsubscribe functionality would be nice, and from our administrative end some statistics would help us troubleshoot when members don't receive our emails (perhaps they are getting stuck in spam, or the email address on file has changed). Does anyone use our shared google calendar, or have an interest in an RSS feed of activities? What would work better for you? Is there another organization you're a member of that does a better job reaching you? Please send any thoughts my way, [email protected]

Tour of
EagleBurgmann EJS supplies innovative expansion joint solutions to meet the world's pipe expansion needs. Industries served include electric power, oil and petrochemical, pulp and paper, and industrial and heavy equipment suppliers. Products include metal bellows and fabric expansion joints from 1-inch to 200-inch diameter with temperature range of -325 deg F to 4,000 deg F and pressure range of full vacuum to 2,000 psig. In addition to stainless steel, expansion joints can be manufactured using Monel, Inconel, Carpenter 20, Hastelloy, and many other materials. Rectangular and other customized shapes are also available. Expansion joints are designed to absorb not only axial movements, but also lateral, angular, and torsional movements. EJS designs every expansion joint in compliance with EJMA standards. EJS will also design in accordance with ASME Section VIII, Div. 1; ASME B31.1; and ASME B31.3 upon request.

A mentoring night for SDSU engineering students will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, from 6:45 to about 8:30 pm at SDSU. The event allows engineering students to talk with experienced engineers on a more personal level on career advices, insights, and real world information. The schedule is as follows: 6:45 Meet and greet students over pizza and soft drinks (provided). 7:15 Presentations begin. Each mentor will have the stage for three to five minutes. 7:45 Finish presentations and send mentors to separate tables for specific
questioning from interested students. 8:30 Final comments and end of program. If you are interested in talking to the students, please contact Casey Krawiec, [email protected], 858-703-7333. Room location and parking details will be provided to volunteers.

It is awards time again! This annual end-of-year event is the opportunity to honor and recognize the Science & Engineering Fair winners, the un ive rs i t y eng inee r ing students, the 25- and 50-yr ASME
members, and your local volunteers. Next year’s officers and volunteers will also be introduced. The Awards Banquet will be held on Friday, April 24, at the Best Western Seven Seas on Hotel Circle.
The Science Fair winners will display their projects and would be available for questions.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Tour of Ormat Geothermal Facility
The tour to Ormat's geothermal power plant outside El Centro went quite well. Our excellent hosts gave us an overview of the two different systems in place before showing us around the facility. In the older part of the facility hot water flows naturally out of the well and is flashed into steam before going through a traditional steam turbine. It is then condensed and injected back underground. In the newer areas water is pumped out and the heat is transferred to a working fluid (isopentane) before being sent back underground. The turbines here are custom designed and built at Ormat's headquarters in Israel to work with isopentane.

Executive Committee Meetings The monthly meetings have been changed to the first Thursdays and moved to a new venue, the Ansir Innovation Center, 4685 Convoy St. #210 , San Diego, 92111. The Ansir Innovation Center is a private company that provides affordable office space and a sense of community for startups in the San Diego area. They have generously offered free use of their nicely appointed facilities for our meetings. All meetings are held from 5:30 to 6:30 pm and are open to the public.
Our next meeting will be Thursday March 5. Members are encouraged to attend and get involved!
