President’s report

Our show is successfully completed again. Entry up on last year to 52, exhibitors from Sth Aust, Victoria, northern NSW made the trip for Stephen Bardwell, UK Griffon Specialist, critique together with photos later in this GG.

Special thanks go to the entire Committee, our Steward Tony Tau, DNSW Rep Julia Jeffrey, Joelle Bolt (hostess and ring setup) and Cathy Murdoch for her donations to the trophy table, the bejewelled with Club colours, (with help from Jen) photo frames, this donation was made after the catalogue was printed, so missed out on being in the catalogue

The majority of photos from the show were taken by Colin Sarantis, all images are available for purchase in large resolution, proceeds to the club. Thanks again Colin.

We welcome new members, Kellie and Warryn Robertson, Gloria Bankhead and Steve Avery.

Onward for next year. Later in the GG we call for the next General Meeting to be held 8th June, 7.30 pm at the Bull N Bush Hotel, Baulkham Hills, for nomination and election for judges for our 2012 and 2013 shows.

Secretary’s ReportIt was a great show and it was lovely to finally put faces to names. I am sure that all who attended enjoyed our 2nd Speciality show, 2011. I would like to thank all of our entrants, visitors and especially our judge, Mr Stephen Bardwell from the UK. Congratulations to all the winners!I have a few people I would like to personally thank, Cathy Murdoch, thank you for your donation of the Special Classes trophies and for everything that you had done behind the scenes leading up to the show. Many thanks to Joelle Bolt for making the Club members feel welcome and been a wonderful host. Thank you to our out of state members who attended with their Griffons and supported the club, it was lovely to catch up. Thank you to Tony Tau for Stewarding and Julia Jeffery for been the Dogs NSW Rep. A special thank you to Colin Sarantis for photographing the speciality and donating all the proceeds back the the Club. Members, if you purchase a photo the funds go back to the Club. If anyone knew the young lad that was videoing the show ringside, I would love a copy of the show, could you please get him to send me a copy. After the show, dinner was organised by Lee Pieterse, and cooked by Shirley Donaldson, I have already sent Shirley a “thank you” and praised her cooking on the meal she provided, I am sure everyone loved it as much as I did (the bread & butter pudding was my favourite). The show is now over; plans are underway for 2012 Speciality, looking forward to yet another Easter weekend in Sydney and doing it all again. Keep warm and well during winter and the best of luck on show ring!

Bridget Power.

Show Secretary’s Report

Most of what I would report is covered in the Secretary and President’s report, however I would like to make special mention of the way the new exhibitors took to the task of showing their griffons so enthusiastically and seriously. I see a good future for these new enthusiasts and their very beautiful griffons.

The sportsmanship exhibited by all present at this show makes it a delight to manage, thank you to Tony Tau, Joelle Bolt and Julia Jeffrey again.

GBC of NSW Specialty Show critique by Stephen Bardwell our judge.

Thank you all very much for letting me meet all of your dogs andfor making Marian’s and my trip to Australia so enjoyable.I was very impressed by your Griffons and felt them well able tocompete with any I have judged. Your presentation and handling skills throughout the entry were very good and somewhat in advance of a number of UK exhibitors and it was a pleasure to see that, almost without exception, you made the best out of your exhibits. I felt your overall strong points were many, but in particular I liked the depth and roundness of the majority of rib cages and decent length to shoulders and upper arms, requirements of our breed that can so easily be lost. In terms of future points to watch I hope that Griffon breeders around the world will put their efforts into getting to grips with our present health issues as a priority over improvements in breed type.

Mr Bardwell presenting the “Beagriff/Jill Seymour” BIS plate donated by Witchgriff, and the antique silver Patron’s Cup, donated by Martyn Cook, our Patron, you can just see one of the GBBA Rosettes, Stephen brought with him, donated by the Griffon Bruxellois Breeders Association (UK)

Puppy Dog1st No1 STATUESQUE WILLIAM WOMBAT R/R young puppy with and excellent shape, with short back and high tail set, lovely rounded rib cage for a baby, harsh coat and stylish mover in profile and strong action moving away, perhaps a little high in front action but I do not think it an issue at this stage of his development. Very attractive head and expression with large head,

eye and nose pad along with neat ears. Harsh coat and well presented.

Junior Dog 1st No 2 WITCHGRIFF REDMOND R/S Youngster with correct strong build, good high tail set well rounded rib and nice shoulder combined with a good length of upper arm giving a well balanced front, strong topline and good set tail giving a well balanced profile. Good size of eye with typical expression and nicely developed in head for the slower to mature smooth, and would like to see a little more turn up to chin and lay back of nose as he develops Good strong colour and relaxed firm action on the move.

Australian bred dog1st No 6 CH STATUESQUE PUMPER NICKEL Extremely impressive dog R/R Dog on the smaller end of the size scale loved his strong balanced proportions in body, lovely head carriage positive action on the move and animated ‘showmanship, nicely high set tail, good depth of rib cage, harsh coat very well presented. Large head with neat enough ears and good turn up of chin to large nose pad with plenty of width between large expressive eyes. Unfortunately for him he just missed out in the final challenge in the main because I felt him a little less mature than the winner, and to be very picky he has a shorter nose than the BIS which in the revised standard put him a shade behind today.

I received a phone call from Lee Pieterse, which is not out of the ordinary given she bred our stunning Griff babies; Taboo 8 years ago and Pikelet 9 months old. Lee was calling about the possibility of us showing our Griffons in the Griffon Club show day. We had noticed the ad in the 'Griffon Gazette' but I was a little hesitant given I don't know the first thing about showing. However Lee thought it would be fun for us to meet some more enthusiastic Griffon lovers and to throw our hat in the ring. She can be quite persuasive.

So we decided to come along, only with Pikelet as I was embarrassed that Taboo's coat hadn't been rolled and I was scared it was not up to show standard. When we arrived I was so surprised at people coming up to me and knowing who Pikelet was. Lee was right, the Griffon Club was a bit more of a community than a Club. It was a delight to meet serious Griffon 'fanciers', and an absolute joy to see all age groups, speciality classes and puppies groomed so impeccably trotting around a show ring.

Pikelet went into his class, 'Neutered Male‘ and trotted out rather magnificently, so I thought, had only one little protest in the ring as he wasn't used to a show lead. He wasn't placed but I think he actually enjoyed himself. I also showed Lee's female 'Grumble', who won her class and then went on to win best opposite sex neuter. So am I ruined now that I have a taste for blue? Perhaps. But what has left a distinct impression on me is not the winning of a ribbon, but how come these lovely little devoted creatures seem to attract like minded owners. Like attracts like so it seems.

We stayed for dinner to chat further to other owners and listen to Stephen Bardwell's talk about breeding and owning Champion Griffons in the UK. We were ever so impressed with not only Mr Bardwell but with everyone we met and their passion for breeding a beautiful, healthy little family member. It is so wonderful to meet people who are truly devoted to keeping this wonderful breed going.
