While the demand for digital content grows, however, so does the potential for its unauthorized use.
Digital media files can be easily copied or compressed into smaller files without the owner’s consent- then effortlessly distributed across the Web for others to use. Copyright and privacy issues.
For publishers to comfortably distribute content electronically, there must be a
Secure System in place that ensures content is protected from illegal distribution.

e-Publishing – e-Tailer – Clear Rights & Permissions
Digital Rights Management is a system of IT components and services that strive to distribute and control digital products.
Retailers integrate DRM technology into their web commerce system to permit the smooth, secure and trusted movement of digital products to authorized consumers.
‘Right expression’ – each digital right expression specifies a combination of what rights are available for what time period, under what access conditions and for what fees.
ISQS 6342
e-Publishing – e-Tailer – DRM Work flow
A Digital file is born – created by a author
Emblazoned with the copyright owner’s digital watermark.
The file is encrypted and stored on a content server. Encryption generates an e- license(comprising decryption key and business rules)
ISQS 6342
e-Publishing – e-Tailer – DRM work flow
The encrypted file finds its way to users hard disk, or e-Tailer’s website. The user can view first few pages or for a few minutes without a license.
Until the user subscribes to the license. For a fee license is provided to the user to view the whole file and download it.
The payment server and license server authorize the payment and provide the user with the decryption key.
ISQS 6342
e-Publishing – e-Tailer – DRM work flow
The key unlocks the file only on the user’s computer. To play it on a portable device or burn on a CD additional fee is required.
The digital file can be copied and distributed but receivers will only be able to view the first few pages or for a few minutes till they subscribe.
In P2p networks also distribution is restricted to few pages or few minutes. .
ISQS 6342
e-Publishing – e-Tailer – DRM work flow
A DRM equipped reader application can track user behavior – like data on other files, times played, at what time of the day – and feed info back to the service provider.
Implications for Marketing
The file remains playable till the terms of the license expire and user pay further fees for the services.
ISQS 6342
e-Publishing – e-Tailer – DRM work flow
DRM specifies Multi-Tier rights
Publisher to Retailer - Issue – issue the right to issue an usage license
From Retailer to consumer rights specification Play, Print
From Peer to Peer rights specification Loan, Transfer
Downstream Rights Specification - License
Upstream Rights Specification - Royalties
ISQS 6342
e-Publishing – e-Tailer – Clear Rights & Permissions
XrML – Extensible Rights Markup Language
Provides a universal method for specifying and managing rights and conditions associated with digital contents. XrML has its roots in Xerox Palo Research Center.
Using XrML, anyone owning or distributing digital contents can identify the parties allowed to use those, the rights available to those parties, and the terms and conditions under which those rights can be exercised.

To form a display eInk is printed onto a sheet of plastic film that is laminated to a a layer of circuitry. The circuitry forms a pattern of pixels that can be controlled with a display driver.
When a negative field is applied, the white particles move to the top of the microcapsule and are visible to the user. At the same time opposite charge pulls the black particles to the bottom of the capsule.
Microcapsules are suspended in a liquid carrier allowing them to be printed on any surface – glass, plastic, fabric etc.

Death of Books ?
ISQS 6342
e-Publishing – Death of Books?
Does e-Publishing means Death of Books as we know them over the centuries – pages of parchment inked over with text or images and bound by a front and back cover.
Perhaps…
More conservative forecasters look for the co-existence of old and new, expecting paper and print to survive this oncoming wave of technology in much the same way radio has survived television – the printed book may take a subordinate role, but it will still have its place… .
ISQS 6342
e-Publishing – Death of Books?
People love paper – they need to be able to “curl up” with their books , take them into the bathtub, love the freshness of a morning newspaper and they still need paper copies of their favorite web-article.
This is “comfort zone”.
Eventually, I think we will get beyond this paper clinging mindset to embrace an electronic world…
