3 SANtricity 10.83 Dynamic Disk Pools Overview
1 Introduction
With the release of NetApp® SANtricity
® 10.83 and associated controller firmware, significant new
capabilities have been added to the E5400 and E2600 storage systems, including a new option to create
dynamic disk pools (DDPs) in addition to the previously available volume groups. DDPs allow storage
administrators to create very large physical disk aggregates and they can greatly simplify management,
improve data protection, and provide enhanced performance consistency.
With seven patents pending, the DDP feature dynamically distributes data, spare capacity, and protection
information across a pool of disk drives. These pools can range in size from a minimum of 11 drives to
potentially as large as all of the drives in the E2600 or E5400 storage systems. In addition to the creation
of a single DDP, storage administrators can opt to create traditional volume groups in conjunction with a
single DDP or even multiple DDPs, which offer an unprecedented level of flexibility. This technical report
provides a technical overview of the DDP feature as well as best-practice guidelines for using DDP.
2 Technical Overview
With the advent of SANtricity 10.83 and the appropriate controller firmware on either an E2600 or an
E5400 storage system, the DDP feature is now available. In essence, DDP effectively functions as
another RAID-level offering in addition to the previously available RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 10, RAID 5, and
RAID 6 volume groups.
The following sections discuss the intrinsic characteristics and architecture of the DDP feature.
2.1 Feature Overview
DDPs are composed of several lower-level elements. The first of these is known as a D-piece. A D-piece
consists of a contiguous 512MB section from a physical disk that contains 4,096 128KB segments. Within
a pool, 10 D-pieces are selected using an intelligent optimization algorithm from selected drives within the
pool. Together, the 10 associated D-pieces are considered a D-stripe, which is 4GB in size. Within the D-
stripe itself, the contents are similar to a RAID 6 8+2 scenario in which 8 of the underlying segments
potentially contain user data, 1 segment contains parity (P) information calculated from the user data
segments, and the final segment contains the Q value as defined by RAID 6.
Volumes and LUNs are essentially created from an aggregation of multiple 4GB D-stripes as required to
satisfy the defined volume size up to the maximum allowable volume size within a DDP.

DDP unikalne cechy
DDP podobna wydajność do grupy RAID 6.
Większa ilość dysków w puli równa się szybsza
odbudowa.
DDP działa znacznie wydajniej w momencie awarii
dysku.
Dla środowisk wymagających dużej przepustowości
można stworzyć jeden duży wolumen z puli DDP.
Znakomite rozwiązanie dla zapisów i odczytów
losowych z małym blokiem.
Możliwość włączenia Thin-Provisioningu
Zawsze ten sam rozmiar segmentu (Raid6 8+2)
