A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source. LEDs were used as indicator lamps in many devices, and are now increasingly used for almost all kinds of lighting solutions. LEDs �rst made an appearance as practical electronic components in 1962. The early LEDs emitted low-intensity red light, but modern versions are available across the visible ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths with very high brightness.When a light-emitting diode is switched on, electrons are able to recombine with holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This e�ect is called electroluminescence, and the colour of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photon) is determined by the energy band gap of the semiconductor. An LEDis often small in area (less than 1mm2), and integrated optical components may be used to shape its radiation pattern. For over 30 years, LEDs have been used in a variety of areas, including industrial systems, car lights, hi-� equipment and advertising.

LED lighting has emerged as the favoured energy e�cienct lighting technology due to energy savings and long-life maintenance saving.

The move to LED outdoor lighting has been gathering pace over the last �ve years with the technology improving rapidly and costs dropping quickly.

LEDs o�er greater e�ciency and e�ectiveness than traditional incandescent and high intensity discharge (sodium) based lamp technology. The quantum dynamics that create light in the LED semiconductor represent as much of a technology step change as the move from candles to incandescent lamps in the 19th century.

By 2020, the energy saving compared to today’s conventional lighting is expected to reach 90 per cent, and LED technology is evolving to �t the Green Cities agenda.

LEDs o�er advances in

E�ciency: energy saving-from 50 to 80 per cent – compared with conventional technologies, resulting in similar reduction in cost and carbon emissions.

Controllability: superior control over light colour, intensity and direction allows novel lighting system designs.

Health & Safety: outdoor LEDs o�er improved visibility for pedestrians and tra�c, road level on-o� signing, as well as reduced light pollution.

Lifespan: well-designed LEDs are expected to last for up to 100,000 hours. Lifespans can be extended even further by coupling LEDs with smart controls. LEDs are also evolving much faster than any other lighting technology. While �uorescent tubes have doubled in e�ciency since 1950, LED e�ciency has increased by a factor of ten since 2000.

LED Street Lighting: the advantages

• Energy saving of 60-80% (with dimming) against incandescent and high-intensity discharge (HID) sodium lamps and CO2 savings which can also deliver up to 80 per cent, signi�cantly contributing to carbon reduction targets.

• LEDs are ‘greener’, more robust to power �uctuation and more recyclable – up to 90 per cent. They contain no mercury, lead, or heavy metal, less delicate elements and emit no UV radiation.

• LEDs offer demonstrable health and safety bene�ts. More focused light improves nighttime visibility that can reduce vehicle accidents and crime, with less spillage onto residential properties.

• Long life expectancy of 20 to 25 years for LEDs vs 3-6 years for conventional lighting, means reduction in maintenance costs, fewer lamp renewals and less scouting and physical monitoring.

• Ability to be dimmed to any specific level easily and linearly, including avoiding early period over-illumination.

• LEDs offer up to 100,000 hours versus 15,000 hours for HID sodium lamps versus 25,000 hours for �uorescent lamps.

• LEDs cast even, directional light, with no optical power wasted.

• LEDs can be instantaneously and digitally controlled via Control & Monitoring System.

London, United Kingdom Transport for London is testing high powered LED roadway lights in demanding applications on their Red Routes.

Mumbai, India The Thane Municipal Corporation will install a trial of LED streetlights in the Greater Mumbai Region with support from the national government's Bureau of Energy E�ciency.

New York City, United States The New York Department of Transportation is testing nine LED products in Central Park and on FDR East Side Drive. Final report for Central Park and for FDR Drive

Sydney, Australia The City of Sydney is testing LED lighting with smart controls on George Street, a road in the centre of Sydney's business district.

Tianjin, China Local government agencies are testing two Chinese-made LED street lights products in a new ecocity development and on a university campus. Results not published

Haldia, India Haldia in West Bengal, India, is receiving LED installations on a major highway in the heartof the city.

Bhubaneshwar, India The city of Bhubaneshwar is in the process of changing 37,000 street lights under ESCO model.

The three major markets for LED street lighting are China, USA and Europe, with India emerging quickly.

To date, China has led the way with a conversion target of 30 per cent by 2015. Rapid adoption in China has been driven by a central government programme for pilot rollouts across a number of major cities, although there has been some slowdown as product quality issues were evaluated. China has also identi�ed the wider global opportunity for its lighting businesses in leading the way in LED product development.

The USA has long been a world market leader in energy e�ciency projects including energy service contracting through ESCOs. Cities such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York have developed visionary programmes for full-scale LED replacement using municipal funding.

As part of its (pound) 24 million future city project Glasgow is trialling a system that senses and records noise and movement so that lighting levels can be increased or even �ashed in certain instances to help reduce street crime.

The Proposal For Tube Lights & Bulbs

1. All tube lights to be replaced at our company’s cost, and therefore, no capital investment needs to be made by the local bodies / consumers.

2. With this replacement, there will be savings of at least 60 - 70% of the current electricity costs.

3. The company will take on full responsibility of replacement of the LED tube lights and bulbs for 5 years.

Payment For Tube Lights & Bulbs

In exchange for the services provided, the company receives Rs. 50 per tube light per month for a period of 24 months. Balance 36 months would be Rs. 10 per tube light per month. For bulbs, we charge Rs. 10 every month for a period of 24 months. Balance 3 years, we charge Rs. 25 per bulb per year.

BENEFITS

This proposal is highly bene�cial for the following reasons:

1. 10 years guarantee for the street lights is given by the company. Therefore, no cost to be borne by the Government/ Local Body/ Organization. 5 years guarantee for tube lights and bulbs.

2. Additionally, there is 70 - 75%, and with dimming 80 – 85% savings in electricity, thus a greener option to light the streets. In tube lights and bulbs, a saving of 60 - 70% can be achieved.

3. In a few years time, the switch to LED lights will become inevitable in accordance with the global trend. So, instead of installing LED lights at the local body’s expense, it is better to outsource this to a company like ours.

4. Electricity costs are likely to increase with time. By installing LED lights, the Government / Local Body / Organizations’ savings will also increase proportionately.

5. The impact of the bene�ts is far-reaching – globally and locally.

6. Signi�cant savings in maintenance cost as the expected life span of the street lights is in excess of 15 years. For tube lights and bulbs it is in excess of 5 years.

7. After the contract period all the bene�ts of the savings goes directly to the Government / Local Body / Organization.
