In This Issue ♦ Seeking Your Input ♦ Announcing Class XXIX ♦ ALF Events ♦ Proposed Slate for 2011 Trustees ♦ Vote ♦ But for ALF ♦ Dues Reminder ♦ Class News: Checking-In ♦ Nominate a Fellow ♦ Job/Board Postings

ALF recently held two sessions to get input on two strategic issues the organization faces on an ongoing basis.total of 35 members from Classes XVI, XXIII, XXIV, and XXVI participated. Here is the feedback received along with some open questions. Click here to send your input to Harriet.

Comments on Fellows Programs

• Offer both Single Sector and Core Programs – could do more than one Core program in a year particularly if starting times were staggered.

• Important to be selective – getting top tier candidates is more important than increasing the total number of Fellows.

• Suggestions for potential single sector programs: race relations; brown/black emerging leaders; public sector; energy sector. Others?

• How can ALF attract leaders from surrounding communities within greater Houston?

Comments on activities for Senior Fellows

Type of programs to offer:

• Advanced Fellows program for Senior Fellows (number of days? Price willing to pay?)

• Series of sessions for small group (on a single topic?) for deep dialogue (like the Study Circles on race relations ALF offered in 2004 and 2005)

• Several overnight retreats each year for several classes at a time

• Senior Fellow wilderness retreat

• Some activities by zip code

Things to consider:

• How can ALF best serve as a resource (e.g. As a sounding board for public officials? As a convener to get broad input on significant issues in the community?)

• How can we share what the major interests of Senior Fellows are so others can know on whom to call?

• What marketing strategies should be pursued so participation can be increased on the theory that once Senior Fellows get together they will wind up leveraging each other on community initiatives?

• How can we get the information so we can publicize stories about what Senior Fellows are doing?

• Offer only two opportunities each year (Jaworski Dinner and Chez ALF) and then more people will attend those.

Chez ALF Feedback Third Annual Chez ALF: Dinner in My Home gets rave reviews by participants.

While attendance was down somewhat this year, dinners were held in nine Senior Fellows’ homes. Here are just a few comments received:

- "This was my first Chez ALF, but I would definitely vote for offering another set of homes and topics next year since they continue to put ALF members at the forefront of diverse conversations that affect the world(s) in which we live and may want to live. It's an opportunity to talk about something other than where we live or what we do - it's a focused dialogue that allows us to think about something bigger than our individual selves." –Cecilia Hawkins, Education Class 3, guest at “The role of theater in society and the process of bringing the

written word to life on stage”

- "Had you joined us at Cindy Garbs there would be no question as to the need for a return engagement. Great hosts, friends, food and conversation. Must do again next year." –Marvin Marcell, Class XII, guest at “Restoring Our Nation—how can each of us participate?”

- "We had a lovely time - great people at the table and we sat until nearly 10:00 p.m. - and this on a 'school night.' All participated and had something to offer that we hadn't heard about before." –Mary Margaret Hansen, Class XVII, host for “Gaining Perspective on Immigration”

- "I had a wonderful time and look forward to an opportunity to be involved again in the future. I enjoyed meeting ALF members whom I did not know and the diversity of class representation was very interesting. We had a Class I member in our group and it was wonderful to hear him discuss the program as it was in the very beginning and how his ALF affiliation has been beneficial to him. We had a good discussion about the pros and cons and the on-going debate of Core versus Single Sector classes. A member of Education Class 1 was present too. All others in the group were from the general classes. They were interested in learning about our experience in and opinion of the specialized classes." –Beverly Malazzo, Criminal Justice Class 1, guest at “How did my experience with ALF impact my way of thinking?"

- "Our dinner was fabulous and the sharing was amazing. We each brought a token of our leadership for a white elephant gift exchange. Great evening was had by all!" –Jane Meyer, Class XXV, guest at “Sharing Your Key to Leadership”
