Exposure visit to Birbhum

PUPA facilitated three days exposure visit in Birbhum at Luvpur and Illambazar block on IGA (Income Generation Activities) run by the Self Help Groups at individual, group, cluster and federation level. 30 members from SHGs of DSGP, who have submitted their IEPs under ICZMP

and also 10 staff of ICZMP of PUPA, have participated in this exposure visit. Participants acquired sufficient knowledge on how to run IGAs through group approach, production and marketing system, daily management affairs, accounting system, and role of supporting organizations. Side by side they have introduced on the Cluster and Federation concept and motivate to start their own cluster in their GP.

roof to start a collective journey of 152 SHGs including 120 women Groups, 24 mixed groups. In this meet SHG members spent a whole day under a roof and share their views and inspire other SHGs. In this meet SHG women conducted the whole day’s programme. There was various stalls for exhibiting their work and skills in the event. The cultural programme was furnished with the creative dance, song and recitation of the SHG women. The main focus of the programme was a drama “Janmo holo Abhisap” by SHG women. The SHG women performed in various characters to give a social massage about the Caste System. Near about 1000 SHG members gather in this meet and started a new venture in their life. In this gala meet, PUPA helped the SHG women in various works to make the event a grant success. The prime message obtained from this eventthree Ds that is DEMAND, DEDICATION and DEVELOPMENT for the women.

20, 2014. They visited Dhaspara village of DS-I to see the tube well with raised platform implemented by “Asher Alo SGSY”. They also interact with members of the Self Help Group regarding the procurement committee and Jal committee of the tube well. The members also displayed a table concerning their training, obtained from PUPA and supported by ICZMP.

Training Programme on Integrated Farming System

PUPA organized a four days training programme on Integrated farming system supported by ICZMP. The basic objective of the training programme was to facilitate the integrated farming based on many factors one of the factor is low cost farming. This low cost farming is nothing but the harmonization of several varieties of cultivation like Agriculture, Horticulture Diary farming, Goat farming, Duckery, Fishery etc. for which left over material of one cultivation may be used as an ingredients’ for the other. 25 participants from various groups participated in this training. Last two days the training was conducted in grassland to give a clear idea and suggestion on various farming at field level in Mahendraganj, Dhaspara and Gobindapur Village.

Awareness programme on environment issues

PUPA celebrated World Earth Day in Dhaspara Prasanna Madhyamik Sikshakendra, Sagar Island on April 22, 2014 and World Environment Day with the students of Mahendraganj High School,DS-1 GP, Sagar Island on June 5, 2014 under ICZMP banner to create awareness among the students on the environmental challenges of our present time. Besides PUPA observed the International biodiversity day in DS-I GP to create awareness to the all SHGs regarding environment and biodiversity conservation. The awareness was centered on the “Green wave” topic. The basic motto of those programmes was to encourage the students and SHG members to

protect the biodiversity and start biodiversity conservation for sustainable green environment. Finally, all the students took oath that each one of them will plant and nurture a tree in their home for sustainable green environment.

Health camp for flood victims

PUPA has arranged a Health Awareness Camp and Health Treatment Camp at Phulbari for the flood victims. The whole programme was conducted by Dr. Shaktikana Mitra ( Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Coal India) August 2,

2014. The programme continued from 4 pm to 8pm .Thirty persons came from flooded areas to check up their heath and to have the valuable suggestions from the doctor. Dr. Mitra served the victims by providing and prescribing medicines and aware them on health and hygiene. Another health programme was arranged at Boatkhali, the most flood affected area. Villagers were suffering from skin disease, malnutrition other digestive related problems. They were provided with medicines and suggestions according to their needs. The programme continued for two hours. The programme ended with vote of thanks from villagers.

Celebrated 1st & 25th Baishakh (Rabindranth’s birth day)-

PUPA organised a programme on Rabindranth’s birthday (25se Boishakh) at Phulbari Children

from SC community were participated in this programme.

It includes drawing, dancing, candle kindle, conchblow, poem recital etc. It was a joyful experience to see the students, and most of them were first generation learners. What was overwhelming was the spontaneous response of the community members and parents There were other programmes like drawing competition and musical chair for the students and the staff.

ICZM Project

Tube wells with elevated platforms for the community of DS-1 GP, Sagar Island under ICZMP

Entry Point activity (EPA) is an important step as per project need of ICZMP (Integrated coastal zone management project) and infrastructure development of the local area is another step to improve the quality of life of the coastal community in Sagar Island. Now five tubewells started with elevated platforms with active participation of five SHGs and community members of DS-I GP. Those tube wells aredesigned according to maximum flood level

recorded so far, as such the people could be able to access drinking water even during disaster.Overall 220 HHs were benefited for those EPAs.

SC project updates:

PUPA is dedicated to uplift the sociocondition of the SC community in Phulbari, Kashtala and Sibpur villages in MG-I, Sagar Islad. Now PUPA supported SC women to start business and develop their livelihood status.

SILENT DISASTER AT SAGAR ISLAND

13th July ,morning ,people of sagar Island Juy 14On residing near the eastern river bank no ced

an unprecedented incident , no storm, no cyclone but more severe than AILA, flow of saline high

tidal water

(fullmoon) over the river bank (in some places, more than 2 feet above the river bank), flooding of more than 12 villages )Kachuberia ,Sibpur,

Pakhirala ,patharpra ma, Hendalketki ,Silpara ,Mooriganga ,Suma nagar ,Dhablat

Sibpur, Beguakhali and few other places, mostly on the eastern bank of Sagar island) .nIntrusio of

saline water in the villages destroyed crops , and all of their means of livelihoo at Sagar island.The flood

starts 1 3 th July,14 during high de ) morning (and con nues up to 1 6 th July,14.

This calamity leads to severe damage of paddy fields (due to intrusion of high saline waterl 10 to 12 ppt.), damages of several thousand houses, Betel Vine Yard s ,livestock,etc .As a result ,several thousand people being homeless are in camps and

sharing community space &food ,which completely alter their normal life including ,

agriculture ,fish farming ,business,students’ educa on ,health,etc .
