E1 CAS-R2 Signaling for Tenor and CMS

Introduction This document is designed to provide information about E1 R2 signaling, the way Quintum products support this, and how to configure for E1 R2. Additionally, at the end of this document is a list of countries and the parameters for R2 that we have seen and used with Quintum products in the past. For more information see Appendix A.

R2 Description R2 Signaling is a CAS (Channel Associated Signaling) protocol that was developed in the 1960s, but is still used today in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Australia. The R2 signaling specification is fully defined in the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) Recommendations Q.400 through Q.490. This document does not provide the full definition, but only touches upon the basic information.

Although R2 signaling has been defined in ITU-T Q.400-Q.490 recommendations, there are many variations in how R2 is implemented. Various countries have chosen to implement R2 differently. So while some carriers may tell you to just use the CCITT standard, there are many variations to this standard and more specific information may be needed.

There are two elements to R2 Signaling. They are Line Signaling (supervisory signals) and Inter-register Signaling (call setup/control signals). They are further explained below.

Line Signaling (Supervisory Signals) For R2 signaling, only the A and B bits are used for these signals. The C and D bits are usually set to a specific value, which may vary from country to country. The following table shows the R2 Line Signal, transition, and direction used on E1 R2 lines. An idle state is shown when A=1 and B=0.

Table 1

The line signaling is defined with the following types.

• R2-Digital – R2 Line Signaling using ITU-U Q.421. Typically used for PCM systems where A and B bits are used.

• R2-Analog – ITU-U Q.411 standard. Used for carrier systems where a Tone A bit is used.

• R2-Pulse – ITU-U Supplement 7. For systems that use satellite lings where a Tone A bit is pulsed.

The Tenor supports the R2 Digital line signaling.

Inter-register Signaling (Call control signals) In R2 signaling, the exchanges are considered registers and the signaling between these exchanges is called inter-register signaling. Inter-register signaling uses forward and backward in-band multi-frequency (MF) signals in each time slot to transfer called an calling party numbers as well as the calling party category.

In some countries, they use two-out-of-six in-band dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF) instead of forward and backward in-band MF signals.

MF signals used during the inter-register signaling are divided in forward signal groups (I and II) and backward signal groups (A and B). The inter-register signaling starts after the seizure ack of the line. The diagram and table below shows the forward and backward signal information.

Figure 1

Forward Signal Groups Backward Signal Groups Group-I Signals - Represent the called party number or dialed digits. - DNSI/ANI digits. - I-1 to I-10 are digits 1 to 10. - I-15 is the end of identification.

Group-A Signals - Indicate if the signaling ended or if a particular forward signal is

required. - Used to acknowledge and convey signaling information. - A-1 is to send next digit. - A-3 is address complete, change to Group B signals. - A-4 is congestion. - A-5 is to send calling party’s category. - A-6 is address complete, charge, setup, speech conditions.

Group-II Signals - Represent the calling party category. - II-1 is subscriber without priority. - II-2 to II-9 are subscriber with priority. - II-11 to II-15 are spare for national use.

Group-B Signals - Sent by the termination switch to acknowledge a forward signal,

or to provide a call charging and called party information. - Used to acknowledge Group-II forward signals. This is always

preceded by an address complete signal A-3. - B-3 is subscriber line busy. - B-4 is congestion. - B-5 is unallocated number. - B-6 is subscriber’s line free charge.

Table 2

The following sequence rules are used to identify the signal’ group.

• The initial signal received by the incoming exchange is a Group I signal.

• The outgoing exchanges consider backward signals as Group A signals.

• The Group A signals received by outgoing exchanges are used to identify whether the next signal is a Group B signal.

• The Group B signals always indicate an end-of-signaling sequence.

There are three types of inter-register signaling.

R2-Compelled – When a tone-pair is sent from the switch (forward signal), the tones stay on until the remote end responds/ACK back with a pair of tones that signals the switch to turn off the tones. The tones are compelled to stay on until they are turned off.

R2-Non-Compelled – The tone-pairs are sent (forward signal), as pulses so they stay on for a short duration. Responses (backward signals) to the switch (Group B) are sent as pulses. There are no Group A signals in non-compelled signaling.

R2-Semi-Compelled - Forward tone-pairs are sent as compelled. Responses (backward signals) to the switch are sent as pulses. It is the same as compelled, except that the backward signals are pulsed instead of continuous.

NOTE Current software on the Tenor only supports MFC or Multi-Frequency Compelled R2.

R2 Specific Parameters This section describes the R2 protocol related parameters implemented in the Tenor and the CMS. Using appropriate values supports country variations of R2 protocol. When you are looking to implement R2 signaling, the information below will be needed from your PSTN provider to accurately configure the Tenor/CMS to correctly signal. The actual command syntaxes will be shown later in this document.

CD Bits (line signal) R2 protocol line signaling uses A and B bits only. This parameter specifies the default setting of the C and D bits when the Tenor or CMS transmits line signals. C and D bits of received line signals are ignored by the Tenor and CMS.

Invert Bits (line signal) This parameter specifies whether any of the A B C or D bits are inverted. The line signals are inverted according to this parameter before being transmitted. Received line signals are inverted before being interpreted.

Seizure Ack Timeout (line signal) This parameter specifies the seizure acknowledgement time in milliseconds. This is the maximum time an outgoing R2 register waits for the seizure acknowledgement signal after sending a seizure signal.

Release Guard Timeout (line signal) This parameter specifies the release guard time in milliseconds. This is the time an incoming R2 register waits before sending an idle line signal when a clear forward line signal is received.

DNIS Expected Length (inter-register signaling) This parameter specifies the length of the DNIS expected. DNIS (Dialed Number Identification Service) is the called party or the destination number. If a variable length is defined, then the I-15 digit is used to indicate the end of DNIS.

DNIS Answer Tone (inter-register signaling) This parameter indicates the group A tone used to “answer” incoming calls. Valid Tone values are A-3 and A-6. If A-6 tone is used, condition of the destination party cannot be relayed back to the calling party.

Send 1st Digit (inter-register signaling) This parameter indicates whether “send first digit” group A backward tone is used. When an R2 register receives a “send first digit” signal, the DNIS is transmitted from the first digit.

Group B Idle Tone Sent (inter-register signaling) This parameter specifies the group B backward tone to be sent by the incoming R2 register to indicate idle condition of the destination party.

Group B Busy Tone Sent (inter-register signaling) This parameter specifies the group B backward tone to be sent by the incoming R2 register to indicate the busy condition of the destination party.

Group B Idle Tone Received (inter-register signaling) This parameter specifies the group B backward tones, when received by the outgoing R2 register, indicates idle condition of the destination party. There could be more than one tone used for this parameter.

Group B Busy Tone Received (inter-register signaling) This parameter specifies the group B backward tones, when received by the outgoing R2 register, indicates the busy condition of the destination party. There could be more than one tone used for this parameter.

ANI Request (inter-register signaling) This parameter specifies whether ANI should be requested. ANI (Automatic Number Identification) is the calling party number. When ANI is requested, the calling party category followed by the actual ANI is sent. This parameter will specify when the ANI should be requested (after the nth DNIS digit or after all DNIS digits have been sent).

ANI Length (inter-register signaling) This parameter specifies the length of ANI to be requested or sent. If a variable length ANI is used, the I-15 signal is sent to indicate the end of the ANI digits. When fixed length ANI is used and the available ANI digits are longer than the requested length, the last n digits are sent. If available ANI digits are shorter, then the I-15 signal is sent .

ANI Request Category Tone (inter-register signaling) This parameter specifies the backward Group A tone used to request the calling party category before the ANI digits.

ANI Request ANI Tone (inter-register signaling) This parameter specifies the backward group A tone used to request the ANI digits.

Default ANI (inter-register signaling) This parameter specifies the default ANI digits to be used if actual ANI digits are unavailable.

Category ANI (inter-register signaling) This parameter specifies the Group I forward tone to be sent on receiving calling party category request before the ANI digit request is received. This parameter indicates the category of the calling party and is normally same as the Category Calling Party parameter below.

Category Calling Party (inter-register signaling) This parameter specifies the group II forward tone to be sent on receiving an A-3 backward tone. This tone indicates the category of the calling party.

Only when t1ore1 (config line 1 1# or config line 1 2# prompt) = e1(1), ccsorcas (pbxtg or pstntg) is set to CAS(1) and cassig is set to R2(4).

Guidelines A bit map is used to enter the rxidle and rxbusy tones in since more than one tone can be used. The bit map should look as follows; B8 B7 B6 B5 B4 B3 B2 B1 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Once you have determined the correct B-tones for this parameter, you would set the corresponding bits to a 1 and any tones not used should be set to 0. Then convert the binary number to a decimal and enter this value in for the parameter. For example, to set the tones to B7 B5 and B2, the bit map would look like: B8 B7 B6 B5 B4 B3 B2 B1 0 1 0 1 0 0 1 0 = 01010010 = decimal 82 When you do a print of the results in the trunk group, the sequence will be txidle, rxidle, txbusy, rxbusy, which is different from the order you entered this.

Example config pstntg 1# r2group 1 3 33 14 Sets txidle to B1, txbusy to B3, rxidle to B6 and B1, and rxbusy to B4, B3 and B2.
