THE EUCLID AVENUE TEMPLE COURSE

Conducted under the auspices of the

EDUCATIONAL DEPARTMENT

Season of 1930 -31

Dear Patron :

In these days of the stress and strain of business depression, we sometimes believe it necessary to sacrifice cultural interests. Isn't it just because of these times, that we are in greater need of stimulating contacts in order to balance the wearand tear of business worries?

For this, the fourth year of our course, we have planned twelve wonderful evenings, one every other week, with three evenings, or great artists, one public discussion, a unit course of three lectures on economic problems, and a number of the most popular leaders on the lecture platform today.

Your requests were carefully considered, and we now offer you a rare variety of talent, hoping to satisfy all our patrons.

Though the twelve evenings are more costly than those of the previous seasons, the price for the season tickets remains $3.50, and 75c for general admission.

We have always been deeply appreciative of the loyalty and support of our season subscribers. May we again depend on your co-operation in launching this, the fourth season of the Euclid Avenue Temple Course?

Chairman.

RE LIGIOUS SCHOOL Regi~hat:ion and Opening Sessions

Pupils entering the Religious School this year for the first time, may register on Sunday morning, September 21st from 9 :30 to 12. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The cover page of the Bulletin gives the dates for the opening sessions of the Religious School. All pupils are to return to their former classrooms where they will be assigned to their new grades. Newly-enrolled pupils should go to the Auditorium. .

Those in last years' sixth grade, now entering the seventh, will report to the Auditorium on Saturday, September 27th at 9 A. M.

Children's Service All children of the Religious School are

expected to attend Children's Services, announcement of which is made on the cover page of the Bulletin. Children will occupy the center of the temple. Parents who accompany them are requested to take seats in the rear or side section of the temple.

A special service has been prepared for the occasion by Mr. Brilliant.

Personals Rabbi Brickner and his family spent

the Summer on an island resort in Canada. In addition to recreation, Rabbi Brickner devoted much of his time in writing and study.

Mr. Nathan Brilliant spent the major portion of the Summer at Teachers' College, Columbia University, and returns to us with the degree of M.A.

Mrs. S. Braverman was the head counsellor of a girls' camp on Lake Champlain.

Funds Grateful acknowledgment is made, for

contributions to the following funds :

Altar : Mrs. Jack Myers; Mrs. J . Lieblich in memory of her brother, Mr. Sol Bergman.

Library : Mr. and Mrs. F . S. Tauber in memory of their son Robert's birthday.

Scholarship: Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Reich in memory of Mr. M. N. Halle, Mrs. D. F. Reed and Mrs. A. Greenfield; Mrs. A. Keller in memory of Mrs. Sig. Schwenger.

It is with grief in our hearts that we report that on July ninth, David S. Kohn, the worthy President of our congregation, who was reared in this Temple and served on its Board in ml\ny capacities for over thirty-five years, was summoned to his eternal rest. A beautiful tribute, such as has seldom before been paid to any Jew in this community, was paid to him when, on the occasion of his funeral service in the Temple on July 11th, every seat in our large Temple was filled with his friends who came to pay him their last respects. All classes of the community's population were represented--Jew and non-Jew. Members of our own temple and members of other temples all felt they had lost in David S. Kohn a personal friend and the community and this Temple a remarkably worthy citizen and Jew. Rabbis Louis Wolsey and Barnett R. Brickner came on specially to conduct the services.

The Summer also took from us :

Sol Bergman Samuel S. Moss Hannah Goldstein Mrs. J. E. Pollak Jacob Klein Al Levy Tina Levy

Lena Riessman Wm. Weiss Dan Wertheimer

EUCLID AVENUE TEMPLE BULL E TIN

GLEANINGS "Let us read the Bible without the ill

fitting colored spectacles of theology just as we read other books, using our own judgment and reason, listening to the voice within-not to the noisy babble without.

Most of us possess discriminating reasoning powers. Can we use them or must we be fed by others like babes?

I love specially to look into the deep, worshipful eyes of Bonita, my dog, whose devotion is as profound and lasting as life itself. But better yet, I love to look into the fearless, honest, trusting eyes of a chnd who so long has been by theologians conceived as born in sin and pre damned at birth. Do you believe all our teachers without questions? I cannot. We must prove all things and hold fast to that which is good.

All things on earth have their price; and for truth we pay the dearest. We barter it for love and sympathy. The road to honor is paved with thorns; but on the path to truth at every step you set your foot down on your own heart."

-Luther Burbank.

"Genuine, steadfast, regular attendance at religious services richly endows and disciplines. And here I find the same truism apparent in Life-I receive in proportion to what I give."

- Theodore Roosevelt.

"Seven Jews are among the fifty-nine men designated by former Ambassador to Germany, James W. Gerard, as men who 'rule' America 'by virtue of their ability! These men do not themselves hold public office, the former Ambassador explained, but they 'determine who shall hold such office'!'

The list was compiled after Mr. Gerard was asked concerning a pamphlet published by him in which he said that the forty men who rule this country and make the British Empire the greatest power in the world in ten years, with a high protective tariff. He later increased the number of "rulers" by nineteen.

Jews included in Mr. Gerard's list are H. M. Warner. President of Warner Brothers Pictures; Adolph Zukor, President of Paramound-Publix Corporation; Daniel Guggenheim and William Loeb, financiers; Adolph Ochs, publisher of the New York Times; Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears, Roebuck and Company; and Gerard Swope, President of the General Electric Company."

(From the J. D. B.)

"At the meeting of the Central Conference of American Rabbis held in Providence this Summer, there was clearly demonstrated the condition of liberal Jewish life in America today. The rockribbed opposition to Zionism is gone. The Central Conference of American Rabbis has voted to include the Zionist hymn "Hatikvah" and the "Kol Nidre" in the new Union Hymnal. There was also conBiderable dissatisfactiQn evinced with the form of our ritual-a dissatisfaction which seems to be well founded. The present Union Prayer Book neither satisfied the demands of the cold rationalist nor of the ritualist. We need a happier combinatiQn of a modern scientific theology with a greater regard for the value of ceremonial than formerly.

Finally, in its adoption with practically no discussion of the report of the CommissiQn on Social Justice, the Conference demonstrated conclusively that whatever may be the reactionary forces that motivate the ' social opinions of some of our laymen, the liberal Jewish Rabbis are in the forefront in supporting progressive social ideals. . The whole proceedings analyzed from this point of view, augurs well for liberal Jewish life in America. It is not going to stultify itself by inanition. It is going to think courageously and it is going to move despite all reactionary tendencies. Such a spirit is bound ultimately to command the attention and support of thinking men and women."
