ArchiMate® 2.0 : A Step Towards A

Common Language

The Open Group created ArchiMate® 2.0 as an open and independent

modelling language for enterprise architecture (EA). The standard

offers a common language for describing the construction and

operation of business processes, organisational structures, information

flows, IT systems, and technical infrastructure.

At this month’s EA Forum, Michelle van den Berg will discuss

ArchiMate 2.0 and how it complements existing notations and

standards; specifically BPMN, UML and TOGAF

Michelle is an experienced EA consultant and trainer at Real IRM. She

has contributed extensively to the new ArchiMate standard through her

work on the ArchiMate 2.0 People Certification and the ArchiMate and

TOGAF ACF white paper. Michelle has also developed Archimate 2.0

accredited training material, and is currently involved in the integration

between ArchiMate and UML/BPMN standards.

Synopsis

The Open Group created ArchiMate® 2.0 as an open and independent

modelling language for enterprise architecture (EA). The standard offers a

common language for describing the construction and operation of business processes, organisational structures, information flows, IT systems, and technical infrastructure.

At this month’s EA Forum, Michelle van den Berg will discuss ArchiMate 2.0 and

how it complements existing notations and standards; specifically BPMN, UML

and TOGAF

Introducing ArchiMate 2.0

Open and independent modelling language for enterprise architecture

Standardised way of describing the construction and operation of the organisation

Describe, analyse, and visualize the relationships among enterprise domains

Layered approach provides for the realisation of the integration between different domains within the enterprise

ArchiMate 2.0 Structure

 Generic meta-model with core elements

 Layer for each domain:

 Business

 Application

 Technology

 Specialised meta-model for each Layer

Extensions to cover motivational aspects and implementation and migration of projects

 Meta-model for each extension

ArchiMate 2.0 and BPMN 2

 Language vs notation

 Not competing, but complementing

Use ArchiMate for high level process definition

Use BPMN for the detailed description of process flows, with elements such as detailed activities, their sequencing, parallel or alternative paths.
