Inside left

Steven Halpern is the GRAMMY® nominated, bestselling recording artist, composer and producer whose relaxing and healing music has helped millions worldwide to relieve stress and promote feelings of well-being and inner peace.

His atmospheric soundscapes support the body’s innate intelligence and ability to heal itself.

Keyboard magazine recognized Steven in 2005 as “One of the 30 most influential artists of the past 30 years…who changed the way we play and listen to music.”

However, there is another side of Steven’s musical lineage that is showcased on Deja-Blues. From an early age, he has been an ardent student of world music, especially the African, Indian and Mid-Eastern traditions that honor the power of rhythm to evoke hypnotic trance states.

Steven is a popular media spokesperson and interview guest who has appeard on CBS-TV’s 48 HOURS, All Things Considered (PBS) and numerous talk shows since 1975.

Halpern’s music is heard in leading health and healing centers, corporate wellness programs, spas, massage centers and homes.

Déjà vu anD Deja-BlueS

Deja Blues is based on two principal musical themes that first manifested in dreams in 1977. From the beginning, the music had a life of its own. Through a series of marvelous synchronicities, I connected with the other master musicians who co-created this sonic tapestry. Ever since I was a child, I’ve felt a strong attraction to the sounds and rhythms of music from India, Africa, and the Middle East. The meditative improvisations of classical raga, played on sitar, sarod or bansuri, introduced me to peaceful sonic reveries. Understanding and playing complex African polyrhythms came naturally to me, to the point where I was often the only Caucasian on Sunday conga jam sessions on campus or in Golden Gate park.

Long before I began exploring the psycho-acoustic science behind the trance-inducing elements of African and Middle Eastern music, I was hooked. When I began meeting the musicians whith whom I co-created these hypnotic sonic tapestries, it ushered in a new stage in my own evolution as an artist. Never before had I heard entire compositions in the blink of an eye; never before had multiple layers of instrumentation played in my mental ‘recording studio’. It was often like taking dictation, and flowed effortlessly in

the actual studio sessions.

Deja Blues is obviously quite different than most of my ambient meditative soundscapes. I believe the spirit encoded in this music can open up new doors on many other levels.

RIDING the RHYTHM

People have danced to the drums since long before recorded history. The grooves featured on “Moroccan Roll” and “Hear to Eternity” are based on a rhythm that began during a three hour trance dance ceremony at a transformative Jean Houston workshop. An ardent student of percussion, I remember he remarked, “Wow! I never played that groove before. I wonder where it came from?”

About that same time, out of the blue, I got a call from an American who had just returned from Morocco. I remember him saying, “Spirit told me we’re supposed to record together. I’ll be in San Franciso next week.” When he played his ney flute, I was transported. I wished I had been able to take William Burroughs’ 1969 suggestion to me to visit the Master Musicians of Jajouka.

I debuted this song at the Festival of Mind-Body=Spirit in New York City in early 1979. Within moments, a strikingly graceful woman approached me at my exhibit booth. I will admit I was taken aback when she asked, “Who gave you permission to use that sacred rhythm from our mystical priestess tradition?”

After I told her how the music channeled through, she shifted state and said, “In that case, there’s some other secrets I’d like to share with you.”

That was the beginning of some wonderful adventures.

Twenty years later, I was in the studio making digital safety copies of the original analog master tapes for the archives. As we solo’d each track for noise reduction, when I heard Schawkie’s flute, I once heard an entire new arrangement in the blink of an eye.

Within the next two weeks, I met master of Arabic percussion Mark Bell, and vocalist Melissa Phillippe, and this album was in the works.

I’ve received many testimonials from individuals who have had past-life memories stimulated. I’ve also heard from couples, who’ve had their chakras stimulated in ways they had never known before. Wherever the music takes you, I know it will be an interesting journey.

Steven Halper n & The Hot Chakra Band “…a magic carpet of sound that carries you on a remarkable

journey to sacred places and spaces. Hypnotically meditative, evocative and entrancing!” – Leading Edge Review

Undulating Mid-Eastern rhythms, bamboo flute, wordless vocal and occasional blues motif combine to create a classic album that bridges ancient and modern worlds.

Unlike most of Halpern’s peaceful soundscapes designed to relax, Deja-Blues harnesses the hypnotic power of percussion with grooves that move body, mind and spirit. Paul McCandless (oboe), Paul Horn (flute), Schawkie Roth (bamboo flute) and Mark Bell (Dumbek) create timeless tapestries of sound over Halpern’s keyboards.

Light some candles, turn up the volume, and let the music move you. Or lie down, close your eyes, and enjoy the spontaneous past-life imagery that many listeners have reported. Either way, Deja-Blues is an album you’ll enjoy for years to come.

Includes: Deja-Blues, Moroccan Roll, Blue Nile, Time-Trippin, Ancient Mysteries and more…
