EAA Chapter 279 Monthly Newsletter November 2015 President's Message Dear Members and Guests, Our October fly-in was much more successful than I was expecting since the temperature that morning was somewhere in the low 50’s and breezy. Our customers are apparently more stalwart than I thought because there were 182 people in spite of the cool air. Maybe we should have winter fly-ins with snowshoes and fire barrels---Naa. As this year’s Fly-In season has ended I want to, once again, thank all our volunteers who pitched in to help make this endeavor the success it has become. The level of support that we get from our members is amazing but more than that they make it a truly enjoyable experience for everyone. Looking forward to springtime, 2016. Our annual Christmas dinner is now scheduled for Sunday, December 6, 6:30, at the Monponsett Inn and I hope to see everyone there. I’ll circulate menus so you can pick your entree in advance. Almost every time I visit the clubhouse I see more progress on the Sonex so if you want to take part it’s still Wednesday nights at 6:30. This month’s meeting will have dinner and a movie, well more like Pizza and my short video of a 1960’s EAA convention at Rockford. This month’s Chapter Video Magazine has an article about Glider Aerobatics with Advanced World Aerobatic Champion Luca Bertosio and an article about the 75 year old Ercoupe. Thanks, Charlie Page 1 November 2015 Volume 2015, Issue 11 www.eaa279.org Chapter Monthly Meeting: Second Friday of the month at 7:30 PM Breakfast Fly-in: Third Sunday April through October November 2015 Volume 2015, Issue 11 www.eaa279.org Chapter Monthly Meeting: Second Friday of the month at 7:30 PM Breakfast Fly-in: Third Sunday April through October Club Officers President Charles Cottuli 781-834-8023 Vice President Bob Letourneau 781-585-9492 Treasurer Gerry Scampoli 508-477-0303 Secretary Paul Paquin 617-201-1816 Technical Counselor Tom Hassie 781-848-4899 Newsletter Editor Greg Lutz 617-877-6029 [email protected] Information must be in the hands of the Newsletter Editor by the first of the month for that month's issue. President's Message

Dear Members and Guests,

Our October fly-in was much more successful than I was expecting since the temperature that morning was somewhere in the low 50’s and breezy.

The level of support that we get from our members is amazing but more than thatthey make it a truly enjoyable experience for everyone.

This month’s meeting will have dinner and a movie, well more like Pizza and myshort video of a 1960’s EAA convention at Rockford. This month’s Chapter Video Magazine has an article about Glider Aerobatics with Advanced World Aerobatic Champion Luca Bertosio and an article about the 75 year old Ercoupe.

Thanks, Charlie

Minutes of the September 14th, 2015 meeting members present 11

18:30 From Gerry and Chuck’s efforts, we had a well appreciated Italian dinner, with salad and dessert. Thank you!

Officers present: Charles Cottuli, Gerry Scampoli, and Paul Paquin.

Secretary’s report: Accepted as reported in the newsletter.

Treasurer’s report:

Again a favorable treasurer’s report was made possible by our continued successful Fly-ins. Our balance should allow us to make it through the winter.

Old Business:

• The new hangar cover is on! And with ample volunteers, the project went easier than expected. Chuck volunteered to fix the broken hinge and to make another dump run. What a president! We appreciate allyour work.

• It was reported that there is a sewage smell coming from under the building. Chuck volunteered to investigate.

• It was decided that we will wait till spring to repaint the tables.

• Gerry and Tom extended our new air pressure system with plumbing and a 220v connection.

• Paul scanned the old Cranland airport photo and rebuilt the old frame. It is again mounted on our wall. Special thanks go to the memory of John Manchester who took the photo and gave it to our club. An electronic copy of the photo will be sent to all members; we thank Greg in advance.

New Business:

• The Club would like a large HDTV with HDMI input. Since many of our wealthier communities have

been dumping these TVs at their “recycle / dump” sites, it was requested that members who live in thosecommunities please attempt to acquire one for the club. Jim volunteered to check out the Hingham Boutique.

• It was also requested that we continue to search for padded chairs. Paul will continue to watch Craigslistand other sources. (Note: as these minutes are being published, Paul has acquired the chairs; now they need to be cleaned.)

• It was decided that our Christmas Dinner and Party would be held on Dec 5th at the Monponsett Inn. Please RSVP to Chuck ASAP.

• A sincere appreciation was motioned for Greg Lutz and his efforts to regularly provide our club with a quality newsletter. Thank You GREG!

• Nomination of Officers; seeing no nominations from the floor, Gerry and Paul volunteered to continue intheir posts for another year. Our wonderful President however is hoping to be relieved of duty. Would anyone care to serve?

• The Secretary will file the annual report with the State of Mass.

• Chuck reviewed coming events.

After the meeting, Chuck showed videos of the Bert Rutan tribute at Oshkosh, and how to check if fabric covering is still safe.

Flying Club Anyone?

Several chapter members have been discussing the purchase of an affordable airplane for the purpose of starting a flying club at Cranland. A quick perusal of Barnstormers or Ebay usually yields a few perfectly serviceable 2 seat aircraft for under $15k. That means buy in for a club with 5 members would be around $3,000. A pretty inexpensive way to fly. We are not talking about a Bonanza or Viking here, more like an Aeronca or Taylorcraft. The type of aircraft however is still up for discussion.

If you are interested stop by a club meeting on any 2nd Friday or Sonex building night every Wednesday.

This Taylorcraft is on Barnstormers now for $13,000

EAA 279 Sonex Project

Alas, fly-in season has come to an end. The days are getting shorter and soon there will be snow on the ground. While there may not be as much flying going on until the Spring, there is still plenty of aviation to be had. The club Sonex is moving along at a steady pace. The fuselage is built and we are doing finish work on the cockpit and will soon install the engine mount and landing gear. Afterward wewill move on to the wings. That will get us to the 80:80 point, 80% done with 80% to go. If you have nothing better to do on a Wednesday evening (I cannot imagine what), we usually get started around 5:30 and welcome anyone who wants to join in.
