Buried in Thorpe le Soken Churchyard

Has a very strong link to the Jack the Ripper case:

- Sir William Gull features in a number of theories and fictional works in connection with

the Whitechapel "Jack the Ripper" murders of 1888. These are usually (though not always)

associated with variants of conspiracy theories involving the Royal Family and

the Freemasons. - The earliest known allegation that links the Whitechapel murders with a prominent London

physician was in two articles published by a number of US newspapers between 1895 and

1897. - In an alleged conversation between William Greer Harrison, a prominent San

Francisco citizen, and a Dr Howard of London. According to Howard, the murderer was

a "medical man of high standing - " whose wife had become alarmed by his erratic behaviour during the period of the

Whitechapel murders. She conveyed her suspicions to some of her husband's medical

colleagues who, after interviewing him and searching the house, "found ample proofs of

murder" and committed him to an asylum. - Refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_William_Gull,_1st_Barone and

“His father owned the estate of East Donyland Hall to which he succeeded.

(His son, a member of the profession but does not practice) is the present owner.

Phillip, like the rest of the family, was very eccentric

He may have married later in life but at all events he had a large family, now mostly dead.

Mr Squire, who succeeded him at Wivenhoe is, I think, a relative. Phillip’s brother inherits

the peculiarities of the family, both in dress and everything else. He had a very thick beard,

at least a yard long and was in general a nuisance. ”

neighbours. His propensity to thieve he indulged in a long time without suspicion, and many

petty thefts were attributed to others of which he was the perpetrator. He at last stole a

gold watch of great value from Mr Nathaniel Hedge. Being from other circumstances

suspected, a plan was laid to detect him, and at a club at the Red Lion Inn, a wager was

proposed by which everyone present was obliged to produce their watches. Hooker, not

suspecting any design, went and rendered callous to detection by frequent escapes, most

inadvertently produced his among the rest. It was recognised and immediately claimed by

Hedge. Hooker begged for mercy, and forbearance to expose him delivered up the watch,

and was suffered to retire to his home. The next morning he quitted Colchester for

America.”
