eAdvising Schedule Planning SessionSummer and Fall 2010(use headphones or see Notes section for script)

Welcome to the eAdvising schedule planning session. In the next eight minutes youll receive important information to help you register and avoid common pitfalls related to summer study and grade replacement. You are responsible for all the information in this presentation so have a pen and paper handy.1March 22: Last Day to withdraw from single course

April 12: Last Day to withdraw from all classes

Important Deadlines

Before we talk about summer and fall registration, lets review our spring semester deadlines. The last day to withdraw from a class but maintain your enrollment in the semester is Monday, March 22. If you are having trouble in a course, talk with your professor or advisor. They can help you determine if dropping the course is a wise decision. April 12 is the last day to withdraw from all your spring courses. After this date you will receive a grade for every courses that appear on your registration.2Registration opens March 29your date based on credit hours

Must have schedule approved using eAdvising SystemSummer and Fall RegistrationSummer and fall registration begin on March 29. The actual day you are eligible to register depends on the credit hours youve earned and can be found in the registration section of your 49er express account. Before you can register, you need to complete the schedule request process in the eAdvising System. 324/7 access to planning and policy info

Submit schedule request form electronically

Wait to hear from advisor

Schedule appointment (optional)

eAdvising System

The eAdvising System simplifies the schedule approval process. Students who decide not to attend a group planning session can watch this online tutorial to get important planning information. All students use the system to submit their schedule request forms online. That's right, no more paper. Your department will follow up with you via email to confirm that either your plan as been approved and your hold is lifted or you need to schedule an appointment with your advisor.

Any student that needs to schedule an advising appointment can do so through eAdvising.4

Schedule Request FormThe Schedule Request form in eAdvising lets you electronically submit your summer and fall enrollment plan. Be sure to choose the correct semester before you type your classes. Also, see the slide at the end of this presentation for links to course pre-requisite information. The department column allows you to list the four-letter departmental code for the classes you wish to take. The course column will accept 4-digit course numbers as well as notations for labs. The credit hour column is to track total number of hours you will take, and finally the notes column is for any questions or issues about a course that you want your advisor to be aware of. If you plan to take any of your summer courses at another school, please make not of this here. 5UNC Charlotte2, 5 week sessionsSession 1: May 24-June 30Session 2: July 6-August 11

Summer Coursework

While we're on the topic of summer study, lets review your options. You can take classes at UNC Charlotte during one of its summer sessions. OR, you can take classes at another institutionbut only if you have permission!6Determine if equivalent course is offeredNCCCs: www.uncc.edu/admissions/Transfer/ccequiv.aspAll other schools: consult appropriate department

Submit transient study form BEFORE starting class

Request transcripts be sent to UNC Charlotte

See Current Students-Advising at www.coe.uncc.edu Summer Transient StudyTo get transient study permission, first determine if the school you wish to attend offers a course equivalent to the one you would take at UNC Charlotte. For NC community colleges you can find equivalent courses by visiting the website above. For any other school youll need to have the appropriate academic department approve your class. For example, if you want to take Chemistry at another school this summer, you must have the UNC Charlotte chemistry department approve an equivalent class from that school. Contact your advisor for additional help.

Next you must complete the transient study form BEFORE you start the class. If you fail to do this, you cannot receive credit for summer study.

Finally, when you finish the class, you must request a copy of your transcript be sent to the Registrars Office at UNC Charlotte. Complete summer transient study information and a link to the required form can be found on the College of Engineering advising website.7Fall/Spring full-time: 12 credit hours

Register early to reserve your space

Students changing between EN and ET should consult their advisorFinal Registration NotesWell close this section of the presentation with some final registration notes. To be full-time during the fall or spring semester you need to take a minimum of 12 credit hours. This is important if youll be receiving financial aid. Second, register early! Classes fill over the summer, so go ahead and reserve your space now. You can always make changes later. Finally, if you plan to change between an engineering and engineering technology major, contact your advisor before completing the schedule request form. 8Policies You ShouldKNOW

In the next section, well review important policies you should know. 9Bobby earns a D in Chemistry

Retakes class for better grade

No action = both grades in GPAGrade Replacement (1)

First is grade replacement. Well use an example to explain this policy. Bobby takes Chemistry this spring and earns a D. He registers for the class this fall to earn the required C or better grade. If he takes no action, at the end of the fall semester, both his D and new grade will be used to calculate his GPA.10Using grade replacement:Bobby earns a B = B calculated in GPABobby earns an F = D calculated in GPABobby withdraws = D calculated in GPAGrade Replacement (2)

But if Bobby uses the grade replacement policy, only his highest grade will be used to calculate his GPA. So if Bobby earns a B, only the new grade appears in his GPA. If he earns an F, only the original grade of D appears in his GPA. If he withdraws this counts as a use of the policy and the D will continue to appear in his GPA.11Grade replacement rulesFor courses taken fall 2007 and afterCan be used for a max of 2 coursesCannot be revoked once submitted

Grade replacement deadlinesMay 25: for summer retakesSept. 1: for fall retakes

More info at www.coe.uncc.edu, Current StudentsAdvising Grade Replacement (3)

To use grade replacement you must follow these rules. First, the policy only applies to courses taken fall 2007 and later. Second, you can only use grade replacement two times. Finally, the form cannot be revoked once submitted. That means if you earn a lower grade or withdraw, you have used one of your grade replacements. The most important thing to remember about grade replacement is the deadline. You MUST submit the form by the deadline or you cannot use the policy. If youll be retaking a course this summer, the deadline is May 25. If you are retaking the course in the fall, the deadline is Sept. 1. For more information about this policy, please go to the College of Engineering advising website.12University and college suspension are different

You can be suspended from the College of Engineering ifMajor G.P. A. below 2.0You fail to meet progression requirementsCollege vs. University SuspensionFinally, we want to make you aware of suspension policies. University and college suspension are different. A university suspension removes you from both the college and university. A college suspension removes you from the College of Engineering and mandates you choose another major on campus. You can be suspended from the College of Engineering by earning less than a 2.0 in your major. You can also be suspended by failing to meet progression requirements. An example is taking a core class more than twice. As always, we encourage you to talk with your advisor and professors to make sure you are making appropriate progress through your curriculum.13Use resources to create your schedule request form

Dont forget to SUBMIT schedule request form to your advisor

Schedule an appointment if neededNext StepsThis concludes the online schedule planning session. You are now ready to create your schedule request form using the eAdvising System. Your form is not formally submitted until you send it to your advisor, so pay close attention to the directions given in the system. The last slide of this presentation includes links to pre-requisite and curriculum information. Finally, if you need or are required to meet individually with your advisor, make this appointment in eAdvising. Good luck as you finish the spring semester!14Engineering majorsLink to pre-requisite check sheet
