EAERE has opened calls for three awards and recognitions which will be announced during EAERE2020Annual Conference in Berlin:
European Practitioner Achievement Award in Applying Environmental Economics, year 2020The Award recognises Practitioners in the policy or business arena who have made signal contribution inthe application of environmental economic ideas. The EAERE Policy Outreach Committee chaired by JosDelbeke will evaluate the nominations and make a recommendation to the EAERE Council who takes afinal decision.Deadline: Nominations can be sent anytime for future editions. EAERE Fellows Programme, year 2020The EAERE Fellows Programme recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of environmental andresource economics through outstanding publications, and/or important roles in the policy world or in theAssociation’s governance and activities. EAERE Award for Best Doctoral Dissertations in Environmental and Resource EconomicsThis Award is given to encourage and recognize outstanding and innovative academic achievement in thefield of Environmental and Resource Economics. A Committee comprised of Mireille Chiroleu-Assouline(Chair), Valentina Bosetti and Danny Campbell will discuss on the nominations received and formulate aproposal for the EAERE Council who takes a final decision. European Award for Researchers in Environmental Economics under the Age of Forty, year 2020 The Award is a recognition given every year to the young environmental economist under the age of forty who is judged to have made the most significant contribution to environmental economic thought and knowledge. EAERE at COP25
The 25th UNFCCC Conference of the Parties will take place on December 2-13 in Madrid, Spain. Theconference aims at taking further, crucial steps in the UN climate change negotiations. A key objective is tocomplete several matters for the operationalization of the Paris Climate Change Agreement. Theconference also aims to create ambition in view of 2020, by when countries have committed to submitupdated national climate action plans. EAERE will be present at the conference with three delegates: JosDelbeke (Head of delegation), Phoebe Koundouri and Aldo Ravazzi. Moreover, Lucas Bretschger willgive a keynote speech at the event "New Perspectives on Climate Finance - A debate with experts andstakeholders on how to implement Article 2.1C" at COP25 venue on December 10, 2019. EIT Climate-KIC Climathons 2019 in Athens, Larissa & Mytilene - Greece
On Friday 25th October 2019, three Climathons took place in Greece under the auspices of EIT Climate-KICHub Greece, in Athens, Larissa and Mytilene, Greece. In particular, the Athenian Climathon co-organisedby EIT Climate-KIC Greece, UN SDSN Greece, Organization Earth and Aephoria was hosted by HFAISTOSEducational Association of Athens. This year’s challenge was to create bikeways in Athens as a solution toair pollution and climate change. Among the awards, the winning team will have the chance to present itsidea to the municipality of Athens and discuss the implementation plan with the Municipality officers.More information here
Third Sustainability Summit for South-East Europe and the Mediterranean
On 16th and 17th October 2019, the Economist Events and the United Nations Sustainable DevelopmentSolutions Network (SDSN) Greece in association with UN SDSN Mediterranean, UN SDSN Black Sea and EITClimate-KIC Hub Greece, organized the Third Sustainability Summit for South-East Europe and theMediterranean in Athens. Over the years this Summit has developed into the main annual meeting ofhigh-profile academics, innovators, politicians, policy makers and civil society stakeholders in the South-East Europe and the Mediterranean, convening networks of expertise, mobilizing resources andinfluencing regional policy for the urgently needed sustainability transition. UN Climate Action Yearbook and Climate Actions PathwaysThe Yearbook of Global Climate Action 2019 takes stock, highlighting climate action success stories and theneed for conditions leading to stepped up climate action, while the Climate Action Pathways suggesttransformational actions and milestones towards neutrality in key areas such as energy, industry,transport, human settlements, water, land use, and resilience to the inevitable effects of climate change.The documents were developed by the coalitions and initiatives of the Marrakech Partnership for GlobalClimate Action, under the leadership of the High-Level Champions. Both the Yearbook and the Pathwaydocuments are comprehensive references for negotiators as they prepare for the UN Climate Conference(COP 25) in Madrid in December, they will be presented at an event on December 4 andintegrated throughout the events of the Marrakech Partnership in Madrid.Read the Yearbook and the Pathways
UNEP Emissions Gap Report 2019The tenth edition of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Emissions Gap Report providesthe latest assessment of scientific studies on current and estimated future greenhouse gas (GHG)emissions and compares these with the emission levels bearable for the world to progress on a least-costpathway to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. This Report wants to fill in the gap between wherewe are now in terms of emissions, and where we need to be. EEA's overview of reported national policies and measures on climate change mitigation in Europein 2019In 2019, EU Member States reported a total of 1925 expired, existing and planned policies and measures.This represents an increase in the number of policies and measures reported by Member States, thatpartially can be explained by the preparation of the National Energy and Climate Plans and the newinterventions that they include. However, despite modest improvement, quantitative evidence on theeffectiveness and costs of these measures remains insufficiently reported.Read the Full Report
CEPS Policy Brief - Circular Economy For Climate Neutrality: Setting the priorities for the EUThis policy brief looks at how circular economy can support EU climate policy, emphasizing that circulareconomy is more than just another ‘product standards’ policy. It states that here is a need for a frameworkto address trade-offs, such as between the circular and the bioeconomy, but also between materialefficiency and energy use. A mechanism to steer and monitor progress, for example through targets, isalso necessary to increase ambition. The report adds that the new Commission will need to develop andscale up successful products and processes to create opportunities while addressing risks, such asdependency on raw materials.Read the Full Report
