Scholars will show a commitment to excellence by being in full uniform at all times. 2. Scholars will demonstrate a focus on academics by being free of all electronic devices. 3. Scholars will demonstrate leadership and effort in the classroom by only using academic language at all times. EFFORT: Scholars work will be evaluated as to how effectively new concepts and processes are incorporated into drawing techniques. HOMEWORK assignments will be related to specific classroom tasks. Unexcused absences for quizzes and projects will require a 1-page paper explaining the absence with a deduction from grade or a phone call from a parent *Exception: If you are absent on the due date but demonstrate COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE and turn the assignment the day you return to school along with legitimate documentation explaining your absence (ie, permission slip from a trip, PSAL game schedule, doctor’s note, text from parent to educator, etc), then the assignment will be accepted for full credit.

How to Make Up Work If You’re Absent • If you are absent, the work you missed with appear in Engrade with an A for

Absent (instead of M or 0). • If you bring in legitimate documentation explaining your absence (see above

examples of documentation), the A may either be changed to E (for Excused) or an actual grade (if you complete the work on time).

Course GOALS and DESCRIPTION: As a studio Art course, the majority of class time will consist of drawing and painting. One of the primary goals is to broaden the experience of the scholars with various Art materials. The course will familiarize students with the elements of visual form, while enhancing critical and visual literacy. Scholars will investigate the different ways to approach and develop the process of drawing and creating. References to the Manga, Fusion and other Comic and other historical drawing styles will be used throughout the course.

• Students will discover how to visually communicate their ideas through the exploration of various drawing styles and techniques (use of line).

• Through drawing and techniques, we use visual communication as language. • Remember that each of us have a drawing style • Essential Questions

How can I see rhythm in what I am observing? What materials do I need get the desired results when drawing? What is Visual Literacy? Creating Literature from Art and Art from literature What is the relationship between points, lines and shapes? Are features of the human anatomy exaggerated or minimized in order to set a

mood or show emotion? How can I use Art to voice my outlook on the world?

The goals are aligned with the Blueprint Visual Arts curriculum (Grades PreK – 12) and the NYS Common Core Standards:

• Engage learning beyond the classroom, using real life issues. • Students will develop thematic artwork artist/maker and critic of artwork. • ELA

Use words, phrases, and clauses to link the major sections of the text, create cohesion, and clarify the relationships between claim(s) and reasons, between reasons and evidence, and between claim(s) and counterclaims. This drives the thinking behind artwork produced.

Supplies: Notebook loose leaf or a section, blue or black pen, pencil, email account ART SUPPLIES: 8.5in x 11in sketch pad, color pencils, kneaded rubber eraser, 12 inch ruler or straight edge, compressed charcoal sticks, 1 pack of sharpie markers, sharpener, HB set of pencils and No. 2 pencils.
