WHERE WE

I you are living here, or consid-

ering a move to the area, youare striking up a hometownrelationship with a very specialregion.

The Merrimack Valley of Mas-sachusetts and Southern NewHampshire is rich with history, oppor-tunities for recreational pursuits, astate-o-the-art educational network, and cutting-edge businesses.

Simply put, this is where countrycharm meets urban chic.

Take a day-trip some weekend in

one direction and you are on the gor-geous shores of the Atlantic Ocean, relaxing with a good book on thebeach, sunbathing, or playing gamesalong the boardwalk.

Drive another way, and you’redowntown Boston, taking in a Broad-way touring show, eating at a celeb-rity chef’s restaurant, and strollingthrough historical trails or a bustlingshopping district.

Head in still another direction andyou are in the lakes and mountain

regions of New Hampshire, wherehiking, biking, camping, boating, skiing and snowboarding are justa few of the activities awaiting theadventurous.

Then again, you might choose tostay home or the weekend. And whynot? As you’ll fnd thumbing throughthe pages o this publication, there’sar rom any shortage o things to doright here in your own backyard.

Yes, each of the communities werepresent offers a unique personal-

ity and a hardy welcome to visitorsand riends. Few places can claim theNew England camaraderie that existshere; that dynamic everyone is look-ing or and ew people can fnd.

The liestyle, the schools, the close-knit communities, the businesses --and heck, yes even the weather (youknow if you don’t like it and stickaround for a couple hours, it reallywill change) .... These are the thingsthat make us proud to say, “This iswhere we live.”

The town was incor-

porated in 1722, when 13

businessmen from the

Massachusetts Bay Colony

settled in town.

Today, Chester is largely

rural. The town encourages

Old-time reenactors, from left, Joe Stokes, Bob Mackey, Karen Hayden and Karen Mackey cook a meal

uring Danville’s Old Home Day.

The Beehive Hut is a historical attraction that isn’t particularly well

known, but has enthralled Danville residents for years.

The hut is located in the woods off Hershey Road and is marked with a

sign. It is made from stones piled on top of each other, with a large stone

slat for a roof. No one knows when the structure was built, or by whom.

Historians theorize that the hut may have beenused by early settlers who were hunting or shep-herdingtheir focks to Boston. Some people alsohink that the structure may be related to thetructures at America’s Stonehenge in nearby

Salem. Some o those structures are more than,000 years old.Danville was incorporated in 1760 under the

name o Hawke, ater an ofcer in the British Navy.n 1836, the town was renamed Danville.

The Town Meeting house is reputed to be theoldest original-construction meeting house in NewHampshire.

Just over 4,400 residents call Danville home, according to the 2011 census. Children in kin-dergarten through itth grade attend DanvilleElementary School, while older students attendTimberlane Middle and High schools in Plaistow,as part o the Timberlane Regional SchoolDistrict.

LONDONDERRY INCORPORATED 1722

Londonderry gets its

name rom the home-

own o the Irish-Scot-

ish settlers who frst

established the town in

he 18th century. Many

o these settlers let

homes in Londonderry,

reland. So when theyenacted a new town

charter on June 21,

1722, they named their

new home ater the old.Originally the town included

arts of Manchester, Hudson,Windham, Salem and Derry. However, over time many of these

reas were claimed by otherowns, leaving Londonderry with2square miles o its own.

During the late 1700s, Lon-donderry became known or theinen that was produced in town.

George Washington and Thomasefferson are reputed to have

worn Londonderry Linen, whichwas touted as the best in NewEngland.

The linen was so popular thatmany people claimed their prod-uct was Londonderry Linen. Toombat this, the House o Repre-entatives passed legislation say-ng that all linen manufacturedn Londonderry must have a sealo show its authenticity.

Today, Londonderry is home tomore than 23,000 residents. Many

eople live in the southeasternart of town, which is near I-93nd N.H. Route 102. Businessesre concentrated in this area,r in the northern part of town,

which houses the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.

Stoneyfield Farms and BlueSeal Feeds are two major brandshat are headquartered in

Londonderry.

MERRIMAC INCORPORATED 1876

While neighboring

towns upstream were

manufacturing shoes

and textiles in the 19th

century, Merrimac

became know for its

horse-drawn carriage

industry. Today, how-

ever, industry has been

forgotten in Merrimac,

a sleepy, suburban com-

munity with a rural feel.Merrimac originally was

settled in 1638 as part o Salis-bury, and spent most i its his-tory known as West Parish o Amesbury, or West Amesbury. In

1876, Merrimac separated romAmesbury and became incorpo-rated as its own town.

Today, I-495 cuts throughMerrimac. There are new sub-divisions in town, but the 19th-Century homes and acres o farmland help maintain the ruralambiance. Merrimacport is theoldest section of town, originallysettled as a fshing village. Thisarea is on the Merrimack River, and contains some o the mostdesirable properties in town. It isseparated rom the rest o townby I-495.

Merrimac is home to about6,300 residents and is is parto the Pentucket School sys-tem, which also includes WestNewbury and Groveland.

Lake Attitash is a small lakethat straddles Merrimac andneighboring Amesbury. Merri-mac has a public beach, calledIndian Head Park, that allowsresidents access to the lake. Thelake’s shore also has many pri-vate homes.

NO. ANDOVER INCORPORATED 1855

North Andover was singled out by early settlers in New England because o its access

to three bodies o water: the Merrimack River, the Shawsheen River and reshwater Lake

Cochichewick. The land was purchased rom local natives in 1646 or six pounds and was

called Cochichewick Plantation.

The town was incorporated as Andover, ater the English hometown o many o the

early residents. During these early years, North Andover was home to America’s frst

published poet, Anne Bradstreet.

Although it was cal ledAndover, the original settle-ment was established in pres-ent-day North Andover. As theown grew, there was debate

over where the parishes shouldbe located. Ultimately two par-shes, North and South, were

established, and the communi-ies continued to grow apart.

In 1855 the north parish sepa-rated and was incorporated asNorth Andover.

Today, North Andover ismade up of commercial, areasas well as rural farmland. Morehan 30,000 residents call North

a number of educational insti-utions. The North Andover

public school system, home of The Knights, is well respected.Merrimack College educatesover 2,000 college students ayear in North Andover. BrooksSchool, a co-educational highschool on the shore of LakeCochichewick, educates over 340

town does: a full 18-hole disc golf course. This unique sport follows the

same idea as golf; get through the course with a few points as possible.

WINDHAM INCORPORATED 1742

For a quiet town, Windham gave birth to a big voice in Sully Erna, vocalist

and songwriter or the metal band Godsmack.

In other interesting town trivia, Windham, along with neighboring Derry

and Londonderry, originally was known as Nutfeld because o the large

number o nut trees that were ound in the area.

Although Lawrence had a sig-nifcant population and industry

y the 1800s, the city was notncorporated until 1853. Prioro that, the mill community

was known as the “New City,”Essex,” and “Merrimac.”Ultimately the city was called

Lawrence, after Abbot Lawrence,

a politician and early investor inthe mills.

In 1912, 23,000 mill workerswent on strike in Lawrence toprotest a cut to their pay. Thestrike lasted or two months, with National Guardsmen andlocal police called in to restoreorder. When the police ofcersbeat women and children try-ing to leave Lawrence, the mill

owners realized that they hadlost public sympathies and wereable to come to an agreementwith the striking workers.

The Bread and Roses strike,as it is known, orever alteredAmerican labor laws.

Today, Lawrence is home tomore 76,000 residents, many o whom come rom Caribbean andLatin American countries. The

2010 census ound that 73.8 ecent o Lawrence’s populationLatino.

Although much o the indtry that deined Lawrence hlet the city, 35 percent o tlocal economy is still manuturing-based. Large companincluding Malden Mills (makerPolartec) and New Balance matain actories in Lawrence.
