Nixon became the fi rst U.S. President ever to resign from offi ce on August 9, 1974• Smithsonian Institution founded on August 10, 1846.• Thomas Edison invented the phonograph on August 12, 1877.• U.S. Social Security Act approved on August 14, 1935.• British troops captured Washington, D.C., and burned the White House on August 24, 1814.• Amendment 19, giving women in the United States the right to vote, proclaimed on August 26, 1920.• Oil production began commercially in the United States when Edwin Laurentine Drake struck oil on August 27, 1859.• More than 200,000 civil rights demonstrators staged a march on Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963.• Some important people in history born in August: Francis Scott Key, (Alfred) Lord Tennyson, Herbert Hoover, Annie Oakley, Davy Crockett Virginia Dare, William Clark and Meriwether Lewis, Orville Wright, Benjamin Harrison, Leonard Bernstein, Lyndon B. Johnson, Oliver Wendell Holmes and Charles F. Kettering. • The following were admitted as part of the United States: Colorado, Missouri and Hawaii.

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up fl owerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.• Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage.• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fi ll in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf.• Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

SALES TAX HOLIDAYAUGUST 17 - 19, 2012

In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 17th, 18th and 19th - the state’s annual tax holiday. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Go to www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490.html for details on included items and restrictions.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY

As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past fi ve years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips:

• Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them when walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride. • Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in well-lit areas. • It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure their safe arrival to and from school. If your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop. • Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes them feel scared or uncomfortable, to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person. Teach them it is ok not to be polite and IT IS OK TO SAY NO. • Teach your children if anyone tries to take them somewhere they should RESIST by kicking and screaming, try to run away and DRAW ATTENTION by kicking and screaming “This person is trying to take me away” or “This person is not my father/mother.” • Teach your children NOT TO ACCEPT A RIDE from anyone unless you have said it is ok in advance. If anyone follows them in a vehicle

they should turn around, go in the other direction and run to a trusted adult who may help them. • Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults. • Teach your children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS from anyone unless you have told them it is ok to accept in each instance. • Make sure the school has current and accurate emergency contact information on file for your children and confirm names of those authorized. • Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency.

Children should be taught to trust their feelings. They need to know that if someone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, they should tell a parent, guardian or trusted adult. Visit www.missingkids.com for even more back to school safety tips.

MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATER COMPANY 2012-2013 SEASON

MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION, August 9-18, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007).KIMBERLY AKIMBO, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfi t (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed. DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)

We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus. For additional information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or [email protected] (email). We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it.

Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in October and book performances for the fi rst two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us.

CLASSIFIED ADSCRAZY DAYS OF 5TH GRADEWritten by Melissa M. Williams

an Iggy the Iguana Book

Crazy Days of 5th Grade is the 3rd book in the Iggy the Iguana chapter book series for children which focuses on themes of the upper elementary classroom, including making new friends, positive changes in learning styles and respect for others. When Iggy’s new teacher, Mr. Gruff the goat, continues to eat his homework, he realizes his old ways of studying are over. It will take the mind of a creative genius and a lot of make-believe to revitalize Iggy’s concentration in class. What started off as a lonely, boring school year missing his best friend Snap Shell the turtle, turns into a suspenseful ride that includes a strange encounter with a crab and an unexpected trip to the hospital. With the help of his friends and his little sister’s stuffed animals, Iggy discovers a hidden talent proving what he once considered a problem was really a gift in disguise.
