Eamon Hannan – Principal

Pope Francis’s secrets to happiness

1. “Live and let live.” Everyone should be guided by this principle, he said, which has a

similar expression in Rome with the saying, “Move forward and let others do the same.”

2. “Be giving of yourself to others.” People need to be open and generous toward others, he

said, because “if you withdraw into yourself, you run the risk of becoming egocentric; and

stagnant water becomes putrid.”

3. “Proceed calmly” in life. The pope, who used to teach high school literature, used an

image from an Argentine novel by Ricardo Guiraldes, in which the protagonist — gaucho

Don Segundo Sombra — looks back on how he lived his life.

4. “A healthy sense of leisure”. The Pope said “consumerism has brought us anxiety”, and

told parents to set aside time to play with their children and turn off the TV when they sit

down to eat.

5. “Sundays should be holidays”. Workers should have Sundays off because “Sunday is for

family,” he said.

6. “Find innovative ways to create dignified jobs for young people”. “We need to be creative

with young people. If they have no opportunities they will get into drugs” and be more

vulnerable to suicide, he said.

7. “Respect and take care of nature”. Environmental degradation “is one of the biggest

challenges we have,” he said. “I think a question that we're not asking ourselves is: 'Isn't

humanity committing suicide with this indiscriminate and tyrannical use of nature?'”

8. “Stop being negative”. “Needing to talk badly about others indicates low self-esteem. That

means, 'I feel so low that instead of picking myself up I have to cut others down,'” the

Pope said. “Letting go of negative things quickly is healthy.”

9. “Don't proselytise; respect others' beliefs”. “We can inspire others through witness so that

one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism,

which paralyses: 'I am talking with you in order to persuade you,' No. Each person

dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not

proselytising,” the Pope said.

10. “Work for peace”. “We are living in a time of many wars,” he said, and “the call for peace

must be shouted. Peace sometimes gives the impression of being quiet, but it is never quiet,

peace is always proactive” and dynamic.

Weekend Masses

Progress of Works at the College

Thank you to everyone involved for their patience as the development of St Pat’s Square takes

shape and Jubilee Hall is redeveloped. We are hopeful that we may be able to use at least part

of St Pat’s Square in Term 4 this year. The Jubilee Hall section is due to be completed in late

November 2014. During the QCS test next week there will be no construction on site.

Exam Timetable

The exam timetable for end of term exams is on page 9. Please check carefully and see Mr

Gibbs if you have a clash.

Readings for this Sunday’s Mass – 22nd

Sunday in Ordinary time

First reading, Jeremiah 20 : 7 – 9 … The word of the Lord God has meant derision for me.

Psalm, Psalm 62 : 2-6, 8-9 … My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.

Second reading, St Paul to the Romans 12:1 – 2 … May you present your bodies as a living sacrifice.

Gospel, Matthew 16 : 21 – 27 … Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself.

Kea McNeill – Campus Minister

Last week, Fr Rob Galea, a catholic priest who

is also a singer/songwriter visited the college.

Fr Rob is from Malta and came to Australia

seven years ago during his seminarian studies.

He was ordained a priest four years ago.

When he is not working as a Parish priest in

Shepparton, he visits schools and parishes

around Australia running retreats, talks and

putting on concerts. In the past Fr Rob has

worked with well-known singers such as Guy

Sebastian, Paulini, Matt Maher and Hillsong United, and is currently doing some work with

DJ’s from the Ministry of Sound.

During his visit to the College, he performed a few of his own songs and told stories of his life

growing up in Malta and his relationship with his parents. He told us of some of the turning

points in his life and the people who influenced him in good and bad ways. He gave us advice

on things to look forward to in life and how we can have a relationship with God by sharing

how he often has conversations with God and how he casually chats with Jesus.

Fr Rob had a short yet busy stop in Mackay. Following his performance at St Patrick’s he ran

various workshops for staff and students at Mercy and Holy Spirit Colleges, ending his trip

with a community concert at Holy Spirit College for all ages on Friday night.

Fr Rob can be found on:

Twitter and Instagram: @frrobgalea

Face Book: facebook.com/frrobgalea

And his music can be found on iTunes or on his website: http://www.frrobgalea.com/

His visit was enjoyed by all, and we wish him all the best with his future ministries. We will

keep him and all others who do God’s work in our prayers as we pray:

QCS

Congratulations to the current Year 12 QCS group on their excellent response to both the hard

work on the final QCS practice and the actual results on those tests. Improvement was

demonstrated on both Multiple Choice Papers and the Writing Task. The students will receive

those results back tomorrow along with all the answers for the Short Response Paper. Please

ensure all students have their correct equipment for next week – THIS WEEK.

As all Year 12 students know, the QCS Test is next Tuesday and Wednesday 2 – 3 September.

Please ensure you have the correct equipment which is listed below because you cannot do the

test without it. Now would also be a good time to change the battery in your calculator.

Please do not put yourselves under pressure and leave it until the day of the test to try and

acquire this equipment.

Brother Tom Award (Athletics)

Two more awards were presented at

today’s assembly. In memory of Brother

Tom Higgins, the most outstanding

athlete was presented the Brother Tom

Medal. In 2014, Carl Story and Gabrielle

De Boni were presented with this

prestigious award, a result of their

performance at both the college inter-

house carnival and Mackay District

carnival. Brother Tom was an advocate

for living a healthy lifestyle; therefore, it is fitting that an award be named after him following

our college and district athletics carnivals.

Interschool Volleyball Grand final

The St Pat’s Blockheads (open boys)

volleyball team were defeated by

Whitsunday Anglican College in Tuesday

night’s Grand final of the Mackay

Interschool competition. Despite winning

the first set, our boys struggled for

consistency in their serving which gifted

~ 5 ~

Whitsunday some easy points which was possibly the only difference between the two teams.

Whitsunday eventually won the match 4 sets to 1 to be crowned the 2014 Interschool

Volleyball champions. The game was highly entertaining with both teams demonstrating some

quality blocking much to the delight of the spectators. Julian Daniello was once again one of

our stronger players and he was well supported by Jesse Allardyce who not only served well

but also hit some powerful spikes. Despite the grand final loss, our boys should be very proud

of their achievements throughout this competition and it is obvious that they have further

developed their skills in volleyball.

Team members for the

grand final were:

Julian Daniello, Travis

Mansfield, Jesse Allardyce,

Toby Doevendans, Jacob

Anderson, Taylor Teske,

Alec Lablache, Ryan Atkins,

Luke McLeod, Triston

Vincent, Connor Wilton.

The open girls’ grand final between the St Pat’s Spikers and Mackay North High School will be

played next week. The time and venue for this game is still to be decided.

Touch (Round Three)

Congratulations to Patty’s Panthers who recorded a two try win against St Pat’s Cats on

Monday afternoon. Both teams were very impressive in attack however their defence will

need attention after a number of tries were scored from poor communication. Tom Edwards

starred for the Panthers in attack and he was supported well by Jacob Anderson. If Tom wasn’t

scoring tries, then he was setting them up and the Cat’s had no answer to his speed and agility.

For the Cat’s, Jamaiah Hutchinson continues to lead by example and he was well supported by

Jonathon Grech and Riley Forde.

In the open girl’s competition, The Amazonians suffered a heavy 10-0 loss to the St Merc whilst

Patty’s Pythons recorded a 5-3 win against Mercy Culture Queens. It is pleasing to see the

Pythons return to the winners list after a disappointing loss in round two.

Rugby Union

Both the Mens and Womens Rugby Union teams played against Holy Spirit College last

Wednesday. The Women’s team played nine-a-side Rugby, against a team which boasted

greater previous experience and numbers. St Pat’s began very slowly as Holy Spirit scored three

early tries and looked like they were going to win in a landslide. St Pat’s began to find their

confidence through the strong running of players like Eleanor Fordyce and Maddison Goode.

This eventually led to St Pat’s scoring three converted tries, two scored by Eleanor and all of

these tries were converted by Maddison, to be trailing by less than one try with minutes

remaining. Holy Spirit ran in two late tries though, to win the game 41 to 21. The team tried

and played exceptionally well considering the lack of players and familiarity of the game.

The Men’s team started very well, scoring five tries to one in the first half, with two tries to

Rory Webb-Smith and one try to Terry Budby, Lewis McDougall and Fred Axiak. This was due

to an outstanding ability to spread their ball wide after dominating the ruck up the middle of

the field, led by the efforts of Jamaiah Hutchinson, Lachlan Murphy, Connor Wilton and

Jordan Amos. In the second half St Pat’s was somewhat complacent, with sloppy ruck work

allowing HSC a greater possession of the ball, which caused Holy Spirit to score some late tries.

However, in one of the plays of the season, Isaiah Derdziak was pinned five players to one on

the side-line before throwing a dummy pass that fooled everyone, to stroll over the try line

and secure the game, 42 to 22. Jamaiah had a perfect night with the boot, converting all six

tries.

All players should be congratulated on their efforts and the season itself continues until the end

of the term.

Sarah Regan – Cultural Coordinator

Airlie Beach Arts Camp 2014:

Last Thursday, 28 students and 6 staff members left St Patrick’s College at lunch time and soon

arrived at the Big 4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort at Airlie Beach. Murmurs of awe and

excitement were heard as the coach slowly drove past the inviting swimming pool, water

slides, giant chess, outdoor cinema, jumping pillows and tennis court that were in the centre of

the resort. What was more exciting were the luxurious villas that accommodated the students.

Each cabin had extra beds, a spa bath and even complimentary Tim-Tams!

We quickly familiarised ourselves with the playground area and had our first group meeting…

on the jumping pillow. The rules were never mentioned again, as the students were so obliging

and mature enough to understand their expectations. We soon commenced the rehearsal

schedule in the ‘Palm House’ function room.

The function room is yet to be officially opened to the public, and I was told that we were

lucky enough to be the fourth group to have booked it! The facilities were just amazing. The

function room was split into three so that we could have stage band at one end, choir and

drama in the middle and handbells at the other end. The rehearsal schedule allowed students

to try out new art forms like drama, choir or handbells. One of the most valuable outcomes of

the camp was the interest created in handbells. Some of the students who rang bells on camp

have expressed their interest in becoming actual members and attending future rehearsals. Mrs

Carmel Daveson, Ms Sinead Williams and I couldn’t be happier for this to happen!

Another great achievement was the choir adding choreography to their Novelty piece, which is

to be performed at Eistedfodd next term. It is a fun mix of ideas from both the students, Miss

Hains and I, and we can’t wait to add costumes and props!

The stage band worked on a new Latino piece “Trofeo de Bolos” which features a huge alto

sax solo, played by Angela Galea (year 11). They also worked on “Don’t Know Why” with

guest vocalist, Nadja Bodlak (year 11). We hope to perform the latter on assembly towards the

end of term.

Drama students Jasmine Sandes, Zakaree Munro, Imogen Lindenberg and Erin Van Iersel

showcased their scenes from “Legally Blonde” at the post-camp concert and their fill-in for

‘Bruiser’ (Chihuahua) had us all in stitches - thanks for that Luke McCarthy!

On our final night, there were many entrants in the camp Talent Show. Ella Jarvis (year 11) left

us completely stunned with her contortionist skills and so she easily won the contest. Other

stand-out performances include the mesmerising drama assessment of Olivia Mills and Erin Van

Iersel (year 11), Laurence Snee (year 11) performing a piano solo and winning the people’s

choice award, and of course, the amazing transition from “Memory” (Cats) into “Ice Ice Baby”

(Vanilla Ice) performed by yours truly and Mr Andric.

The camp was such a wonderful experience, there are so many memories from the three days

that continue to make me smile and laugh. Not only did we manage to be incredibly

productive, but we were able to relax, have fun and get to know one another.

A big thank you to all the students who attended and their supportive parents! I would also

like to thank Big 4 Adventure Whitsunday for being so flexible and professional - the service

and facilities were of such a high standard, we couldn’t ask for better! Also Norm and Sheree

were the most wonderful and passionate caterers, the meals were both hearty and healthy.

Thank you!

Thank you to the staff that helped coordinate this years’ camp: Sinead Williams, Dean Andric,

Carmel Daveson, Lyle Denman, Lindsay Hains and Debbie Harding.

I look forward to the next one!

Photo pages from the Arts’ Camp are on pages 10 and 11.

At the height of the Great Depression, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow went from two small-

town nobodies in West Texas to America's most renowned folk heroes and the Texas law

enforcement's worst nightmares. As the infamous duo's fame grew bigger, their inevitable end

drew nearer. Fearless, reckless, shameless, and alluring, their electrifying story of love,

adventure and crime captured the excited attention of an entire country. Now, the most

notorious couple of the twentieth century takes on a whole new adventure in this smash-hit

musical. BONNIE AND CLYDE is a thrilling and sexy musical with an exciting score, combining

blues, gospel and rockabilly music.

Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking of Humans (ACRATH) :

Raise awareness, share information, build networks nationally & globally.

Facilitate action at pastoral and structural levels to combat & prevent human rights violations relating to the trafficking of human.

Provide education through a variety of materials and resource.

Provide direct services – e.g. counselling; rehabilitation & reintegration programmes.

We also work in collaboration with other groups and individuals – both government and non-government. Consistent with these actions we bring you targeted content to inform, educate and convince you of the horror surrounding the trade in human lives. We aim to encourage participation in stopping this phenomenon by both giving you suggestions and tools, while allowing you to also exchange ideas and motivate you to take up the challenge to do more in this arena. We feel that too often this issue has been swept under the carpet or placed in the ‘too hard basket’ We exist to change that attitude and prove that something can and will be done to STOP the trafficking of people for use and abuse into our nation & around our region. Together we can activate a ground swell of enthusiasm and participation which WILL be heard by all – the police, the government, schools, churches, schools, businesses, victims and even the traffickers themselves! For more information, please visit http://acrath.org.au/ (ACRATH website)

Date Claimer : 25th September 2014 At 7:00 pm, at St Joseph’s Parish Centre.

A DVD presentation on ‘Science test Faith’ Followed by discussion time with Fr Peter Tonti.
