The repercussions of European financial pressures are being felt worldwide. Recent events indicate that austerity and managing within your means are rapidly becoming the watchwords. However, the need to discerningly invest for growth, be able to rapidly change course in response to events, yet manage costs tightly is the austerity path that organizations need to tread. This approach increases the reliance on Information Technology (IT) by enterprises and Governments, as it is IT that can provide many of the answers.

The traditional “walled garden” approach of IT Infrastructure and Operations (I&O) of delivering & managing services will fall short of business expectations. I&O will have to re-invent itself into a service broker to provide agility, lower cost and drive efficiency in the business. This year’s Summit will provide advice on how I&O can continue to stay relevant to the business, by harnessing and channeling the power of social networks, cloud and mobile computing to deliver and manage end-to-end services in a rapidly changing multi-sourced environment. Furthermore this event will provide networking opportunities to share experiences, consequently helping you do your job better.

Tracks

1 Virtualization & Cloud Computing: Strategy & TacticsWill Cloud Computing always lower costs? Does Virtualization take me to the Cloud? These are the questions on I&O Leaders minds. Cloud computing has emerged to be the hottest topic in the IT industry in recent years. However, it is seen as a double edged sword — on one hand it has the opportunity to lower capex and increase agility; on the other hand it provides the business the opportunity to by-pass IT. So how should I&O transform itself into a Service broker in this multi-dimensional services world? This track, not only de-mystifies Cloud but provides strategic advice on when, how to, and how much, “cloudification” must be included in the I&O strategy, the role of virtualization and some practical steps that I&O can implement today.

2 IT Operations: Going Beyond ProductionIT Operations Management is mandatory to harness the power of technology innovation in providing services to the business. IT Operations management technologies and processes enable IT to lower cost, improve quality of service, empower IT to better business risks, and help deliver on the CIO’s strategic goal of aligning IT with the business. CIOs and senior IT leaders are increasingly focusing on the management of I&O as it is the largest component of I&O and is integral to the availability and performance of business systems. In these sessions attendees will gain practical and prescriptive advice on the benefits and challenges of process frameworks, such as ITIL, managing staff for optimal results, how to leverage social networking, the IT Operations management market and the importance of running IT Operations like a business.

3 Mobility, Network and Communications: The Road AheadWork is no longer just confined in the office. More often than not, we are at work on the road, in the airport and at home. Adapting to the needs of a more decentralized, remote and mobile workforce must be a priority for all I&O organizations and represents one of the biggest cultural challenges of the next five years. It is not easy to build mobile, networking and communications solutions that let the employee work from all these locations with the ease and functionality equal to the best equipped office. Communications have changed also from just voice, to include video, IM, text variety of conferencing causing the industry to shift towards unified communications and collaboration technologies and services. This track will address the most pressing issues facing enterprise mobility, communications and their impact on the network in data centers or the cloud.

GaRTneR keynOTe: Top 10 Strategic Technologies for 2012: Will You Be Able to Manage Them (Before They Manage You)?

Big Data. Cloud Computing. App Stores and Mobile-Centric Applications. The Internet of Things. These are a few of the

technological developments that Gartner has identified as strategic for 2012. The question is, will enterprises be able to prevent the potential unintended consequences arising from their adoption? This session will explore the manageability implications arising from the emergence of these new technologies.

Cameron Haight and Milind Govekar

GaRTneR keynOTe: I&O Vendor SWOT — VMWare, Microsoft, Citrix and Red HatWhile VMware continues to dominate the market for x86 server virtualization, the competitive dynamics are changing fast. A recent poll of Gartner users showed that 95% of users are already using at least two different virtualization solutions. As virtualization of non-x86 servers, storage, client devices and networks grows, the choice of vendor will further multiply and the task of managing an increasingly heterogeneous virtualized portfolio will magnify as well. We will examine the relative strengths and challenges of four key virtualization vendors — Citrix, Microsoft, Red Hat and VMware — as they seek to gain market share in a volatile market environment.

Andy Butler, Tom Bittman, Phillip Dawson and Nathan Hill

GuesT keynOTe: Enabling Future Business Innovation, Flexibility and Value Creation — Future Imperatives for IT Operations and Infrastructure Management

The next decade will be characterized by economic uncertainty. Firms will respond with ever more radical and rapidly changing strategies, processes and business models.

Change cycles will shorten — focusing on innovation, tackling complexity and flexibility in the quest for value creation. Technology performance and service expectations will rise along with an explosion of access devices and channels. Rohit’s keynote will explore these drivers and the implications for Operations and Infrastructure Management strategies, capabilities and mindsets.

8 Gartner IT Infrastructure & Operations Management Summit 2012 | 12 – 13 June | Frankfurt, Germany

TRack 1

Virtualization & Cloud Computing: Strategy & TacticsTen Steps to Building Private Cloud ServicesPrivate cloud computing is at the peak of the hype cycle, and the challenges facing IT organizations that want to build a private clouds are tremendous. Vendors are promoting “cloud in a box” technology approaches. However, technology is one of the easiest issues. Culture, politics, process, skills orientation, and business alignment are all much harder. An overarching strategic plan is needed to ensure success.•How should leadership drive cultural, political and organizational change in IT to deliver private cloud services?•How should operational processes change to support a private cloud service?•How should IT use technologies to build a private cloud service?

Tom Bittman

Virtualizing Complex WorkloadsAs virtualization progresses in the portfolio, not all workloads are born equal. Traditional views of virtualizing apps, web and infrastructure but DBMS no longer holds. Now defining workload size and complexity, helps define whether a workload can be virtualized (or not). •What is the ceiling for virtualization 2012-2017?•What is Microsoft’s, Oracle, Red Hat and VMware’s view to virtualizing these stacks?•What are the caveats when virtualizing Oracle, SQLserver, Exchange & SAP

Philip Dawson

DevOps: Hammering a Nail in IT FailFor over the past decade, IT operations has been following a best practices “playbook” that has largely failed on delivering sustained improvements in IT serviceability. As a result, many of our customers have opted for alternative solutions that no longer require IT operations involvement. The struggle to win back our clients will not be found in technology but rather a radical re-think of IT operations culture and conventional wisdom. This session will explore an emerging approach known as DevOps that may provide a solution to the IT operations conundrum. •What is causing IT to fail? •What is DevOps and how can this approach help?•Where should an enterprise start their DevOps journey?

Cameron Haight

Technical insighTs Building Your Internal Cloud, Start Small but Think BigFor many of our organizations, it is time to start designing their first cloud. A large majority have already decided to build an internal or hybrid cloud over public alternatives. However, the road to private cloud is difficult to navigate and many questions remain on the table. How should an internal cloud look? What is the implementation order to build the cloud stack? What is the path to move from virtual machine provisioning to business service delivery? How can IT organizations integrate the internal cloud with external cloud offerings? To address many of these questions, Research Director Alessandro Perilli presents the Gartner for Technical Professional reference architecture and maturity model for private clouds.•What are the architectural components of a private cloud?•How can an IT organization transform itself to build and operate an internal cloud?•How can an IT organization measure its progress towards increased efficacy through cloud solutions?

Alessandro Perilli

Fabric Management, Governance & DecisionsThe concept of “fabrics” has emerged over the past three years as a means to converge separate storage, networking and server technology in the data center. User interest and demand is partly fueled by vendor enthusiasm and partly by the growing number of workload scenarios, such as cloud computing and virtualization, that support this new way of buying and implementing technology. This association of the workload to a business function will change traditional IT from compute-centric toward user, department, consumer and service orientation. But many factors influence what “ideal” approach organizations should take when planning to implement a fabric-based infrastructure (FBI) policy. This presentation charts the likely evolution of the market for fabric-based infrastructures, to help IT leaders determine the most appropriate vendor approach.•What is fabric computing and how will it impact DC transformation in the next five years? •How should IT organizations evaluate vendors’ promises of unification and convergence? •What steps should IT take to evaluate the benefits and risks of fabric architectures?

Andy Butler

IT Operations: Going Beyond ProductionHow Big Data and Server Virtualization Have Changed Storage ManagementBig Data has many different storage requirements from a performance, cost, data protection, archiving and data availability perspective. Similarily the stampede towards Server Virtualization has caused many companies to forget and forego the cost of the associate storage, changes in backup and management techniques. This presentation describes how to exploit the latest and greatest storage technologies in these projects.•What storage technologies and devices should you consider?•How should you manage Big Data storage•How should you report and forecast for Big Data and Server Virtualization infrastructures

Valdis Filks

Application Performance Monitoring: Is It Still Relevant? The ways in which consumer and business services are being delivered and consumed are changing rapidly. It is, in fact, not clear whether the traditional concepts of application, transaction, and end user around which today’s APM technologies are structured are still adequate to describe a world where socially networked communities access dynamically assembled services originating in the public cloud across a fluctuating interface of mobile devices. In this presentation, we will discuss how APM technologies and delivery modes are changing to remain relevant to current and future market demands.•How are application architectures evolving in a world increasingly defined by social networks, mobile access points, and public

cloud based services?•How must APM technologies change to accommodate these new architectures?•What role will APM as a service play in supporting that accommodation?

Will Cappelli

Technical insighTs Emerging Trends: What it Means for the Future of Work in ITThere is no doubt that as companies expand virtualization usage and build more business capability using cloud options (private and public), the role and skill set of the IT practitioner will need to change. What can IT professionals expect, what kind of options are ahead of them, and what do these changes of roles and skills mean to their careers and their organizations?•Understand how the role of the technical professional is changing and how to adapt successfully.• Increase relevance to business by understanding the business context of IT decisions, identifying obstacles to desired business

outcomes, and by becoming more engaged as part of the business, not only as services of IT requests.

Jack Santos

How Cloud Computing Will Change the IT Operations Management Vendor Landscape“The “Big 4” IT operations management (ITOM) vendors are being challenged by a variety of players. Infrastructure vendors from Microsoft to VMware want to turn management into middleware and lock you into their platforms. Cloud computing providers want to take some of the IT budget at the expense of other vendors. In a consolidating landscape, this session provides insight to help future-proof your ITOM architecture.•What does the IT operations management market look like today? •How will cloud computing impact IT operations management markets? •How can you leverage the benefits of integration, while defending against vendor lock-in?

Milind Govekar

Practical ITIL for IT OperationsAs business demands encourage more agile methodologies, effective service management suited to agile development approaches is essential. This presentation identifies the key elements required for operations to use ITIL effectively including the key roles required, how to avoid process-heaviness and the rights and obligations of those governing IT Operations Service Management.•What do agile development methodologies demand of IT Operations — and vice versa?•How to use ITIL to add value to IT Operations?•How to manage governance of service management in IT Operations?

Mobility, Network and Communications: The road ahead Technical insighTs Top Wireless Issues That May Derail Your Mobile StrategyGartner predicts that in 2012 close to 100 million media tablets will ship worldwide. Many enterprise workers want to use these tablets in the enterprise, regardless of whether or not the enterprise supports a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy. But the enterprise focus on tablet support, security, and applications distracts many enterprises from ensuring that they have a solid wireless foundation. •What are the wireless issues that may derail enterprise mobile strategies over the next 3 years? Answer includes a quantitative

and qualitative discussion of mobile cellular throughput/latency variability, unacceptable WLAN service, and inadequate WLAN management.

•What are the best actions that enterprises can take to overcome these limitations? Answer includes technologies, practices, and governance recommendations.

•What are the recommended Monday-morning, 90-day and one-year action plans? Answer includes a specific list of recommendations.

Paul DeBeasi

Network Strategies for a Hybrid Cloud WorldAs enterprises adopt hybrid cloud environments they will need to change their network strategies. New combinations of MPLs, Internet and Ethernet services will be needed and enterprises will need to virtualize many of the network capabilities that currently deploy in hardware.•What new demands will hybrid cloud environments place on the network? •What network architectures should an enterprise deploy to support hybrid cloud environments? •Which vendors of network products and services will be most valuable in a hybrid cloud environment?

Neil Rickard

Smartphones and Tablets in the Enterprise: Trends, Directions and StrategiesMany organizations have due to strong pressure from powerful end users moved to a multi platform smartphone strategy. Fueled by the success of Apple iPad, many organizations are now pressured to take the next step, supporting BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) when employees bring their own media tablets to work and insist on getting network access and corporate email for them. Successful enterprises and organizations need to put a strategy in place to cope with these new imperatives.•What will be the key mobile and wireless technology and market trends through 2015?•How will corporations choose and use mobile technology, services and tools to support customers and employees?

Leif-Olof Wallin

Choosing Between Different Client Computing Architectures: Easier Said Than DoneHosted Virtual Desktops or Server Based Computing? Software Streaming or Application Virtualization? Composite Desktops or Workspace Aggregators? Or should customers stay with PCs? These are just a few of the several options and choices that most enterprises are encountering with client computing architectures. We offer a description and applicability of each, as well as how some the choices can be used in concert with each other to deliver an optimal end user experience.•What are the fundamental differences that exist between the various client computing architectures?•How should organizations choose the appropriate architecture based their requirements?•How are client computing architectures evolving over the next 5 years?

Nathan Hill

Network Management: shifting the focus from infrastructure to serviceAs applications and services become more distributed, modular, and dynamic, the quality of end user and customer experience is increasingly being determined by the quality of network performance. The focus on user/customer experience, however, requires a reprioritization among network management technologies and processes. In this presentation, we will explore the nature of this reprioritization and examine its impact on network administration organization and practice and the role of network administration in IT as a whole.•Why is the central task of network management shifting towards ensuring high quality end user and customer experiences?•How are network management technologies evolving to accommodate this shift?•How should the network administration function be structured and related to other elements of IT operations?

Communications techniques for Programmes That Need to Drive Culture ChangeThe largest challenge for service improvement programs is changing the culture of the organisation. People naturally revert unless actively persuaded to embrace the new norms and practices. This moderated discussion will focus on ideas and techniques that have been successful in changing people’s minds, attitude’s and behaviors — both in IT organisations and also in a wider context from where I&O leaders may gain inspiration.

Storage ManagementThis session will moderate a discussion on why, how and when we should or should not perform storage management. How it is developing, the different approaches used by customers, in-house developed techniques and processes or external products. The present world wide disk shortage has made this issue much more topical as clients needs to exploit their storage more efficiently when they either cannot source or afford to purchase extra disk storage

Technical insighTs The Future of IT Work: Workplace StoriesAlthough change is a constant in IT, IT occasionally goes through significant periods of technological change that precede impending changes in organizational models, employee roles, and skills sets. With the advent of cloud computing and the impact of the trends identified in the Gartner for Technical Professionals planning guides, Gartner believes we are in that phase now. Those trends include externalization, consumerization, and democratization. This combination of technological change and trends will result in changes to organizational models, position descriptions, titles, and roles (within IT for both end user and vendor organizations). This analyst user roundtable will be a discussion about how users are experiencing that change, and will enable the sharing of experiences with each other.

Jack Santos

Sourcing Network ServicesThis session will moderate a discussion on how to source network service, a bit portion of the I&O budget. We will discuss sourcing strategies, customer experiences, challenges and benefits.

Neil Rickard

Selecting and Implementing Mobile Device ManagementRoundtable participants will discuss different aspects of their respective Mobile Device Management projects like vendor selection, deployment options like on-premise, managed service or SaaS in addition to sharing implementation experiences.

Technical insighTs Creating a Mobile Architecture: Challenges and SolutionsMobility presents enterprises with a broad set of multidimensional challenges. Enterprises that make decisions in one dimension (e.g., application architecture) without thoroughly considering other dimensions (e.g., endpoint security) often suffer unintended consequences (e.g., increased risk). This roundtable will discuss the complexities of developing a flexible mobile architecture and solutions to deal with those complexities.

Develop a Mobile Policy Outline

In this workshop, participants will work jointly on creating an outline for a Mobile Policy document. As many organizations are moving to support multiple platforms, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), new form factors and the users increasingly have multiple devices, there is a strong need to refresh existing mobile policies.

Leif-Olof Wallin

cosT opTimizaTion I&O Cost OptimizationWe identify 10 key actions that should be the focus of ongoing cost reduction programs. When fully implemented, these actions have the potential to reduce annual I&O costs by 10% within 12 months and 25% or more over three years. Work with your peers to see what techniques are successful for other organizations, where improvements are harder to realize, and so where you should be prioritizing your efforts.

Ian Head

DevOps

DevOps is an approach to re-thinking how to deliver IT services. While the overall concept is simple to understand, how one goes about implementing DevOps is often less clear. In this Gartner Workshop attendees will participate in a facilitated discussion that seeks to explore whether or not a DevOps approach is needed within your organization, and if so, some of the steps that may be required to implement it successfully.

Technical insighTs Identikit of the Perfect Cloud Management PlatformThe cloud management platform (CMP) market is so crowded, and it is evolving so rapidly that choosing among competing solutions represents a significant challenge. CMP vendors highly differ in terms of platform maturity, architecture complexity and feature sets, making hard to identify the best solution for cloud management. Organizations evaluating CMP solutions require common criteria to objectively evaluate and compare competing products. Gartner Research Director Alessandro Perilli will lead a hands-on workshop that presents an evaluation framework to assess CMP solutions.

Technical insighTs Architecting Your Mobile Strategy

Mobility presents enterprises with a broad set of multidimensional challenges. Enterprises that make decisions in one dimension (e.g., application architecture) without thoroughly considering other dimensions (e.g., endpoint security) often suffer unintended consequences (e.g., increased risk). It is therefore critical for enterprises to develop a flexible mobile architecture that takes into consideration all relevant dimensions, including: business relevance, user experience, data management, application architecture, endpoint security, system management, and wireless infrastructure. This hands-on workshop will present a methodology for creating a flexible, business focused, mobile architecture.

cosT opTimizaTion I&O “Cost optimization” tutorialAlthough most IT organizations are now in their second or third round of infrastructure and operations (I&O) cost-cutting initiatives, pressure remains intense to further reduce these costs. Knowing how and where to focus efforts is a key skill for I&O leaders in 2012. This session shows you how to use Gartner’s key metrics data to gather top line benchmark indications and then use a decision framework to prioritize your Cost Optimization initiatives.•What are the actions most likely to deliver cost

improvements without compromising service quality?•How can you get a top level guide to your costs compared

to other organisations?•How should you prioritize your cost containment activities?

Teams that attend a Gartner Summit together can not only access all the sessions to maximize their learning, but also have the benefit of a team meeting with a Gartner analyst who can facilitate a discussion or advise them on strategic initiatives and key projects. For these reasons, organizations often hold off-site team meetings at Gartner events, and incorporate Gartner events as part of their training programs.

We have designed an experience that will help teams of four to 25 maximize the Summit experience while on-site and long after the event concludes.

To register a team please email [email protected] or contact your Gartner Account Manager.
