BILLY BARTON• • • • SUPERSCOOP!...GET SETJ FOR announcements con-

cerning a sensational NEW "Big Time, Big Top" opera-• <*^ I I tion debuting in 1977. The mammoth tenter will be helmed

by Promotional Masterminds, each with long histories ofrecord-breaking achievements.

An Illustrious, known-to-the-public theatrical personalitywill supervise publicity and pub-lic relations activities. Anequally famous "circus name" isbeing approached to handle thetop talent performance and a rela-tive newcomer (who made a signi-ficant splash this season) hasbeen invited to design and stagethe productions. A "real" circusside show with "attractions ofstature" will be featured on themidway, along with other projectsto herald a TOTAL return to theoriginal concept of the tent cir-cus in America.

I know WHO WHAT, WHEN,WHEREans WHY but nothing will elicitanother clue from me until theday comes when I can name names, dates and details. You will readit here FIRST - Exclusively inthe pages of CIRCUS REPORT.

STRANGE HAPPENINGS: A firethat BARON VON UHL calls arsonerupted in the cab of his semiprior to his departure from Chi-cago for Phoenix. He is offeringa $500 reward for the arrest andconviction of the guilty party...BOBBY GIBBS panicked by a runawaysemi when the gas pedal "froze"on the Raton Pass coming into Colorado. He veered onto an off-rampto avert disaster.

SPOIL SPORT - Someone spill-

ed the beans and now everyoneknows who the FOX is. As a resultNo. 1 Spy has been forced intoretirement. But a new replacementhas been found!

PARLEY BAER is busy doing 17commercials for Johnson WaxPETER LUVAS appeared at the L.A.Sports Show with his %lobe ofDeath".'...LUBEN STOYONOFF has be-come an American Citizen....AR-TURO TROSTL (The Great Arturo)hospitalized in Tampa HARRYBRUNKE's lions filled in the lastfour days of the Medinah TempleChicago run, subbing for Von Uhl,who subbed for Anthony...Conces-sion head ART BARRETT signed the"ex" on concessions for the Sag-inaw Shrine date in 1977.

CAPSULE COMMENT: The WALLEN-DA book is punctuated by tragedy. It is, however, an entertainingbio with a wealth of European circus background. The chapter onthe Hartford Fire is especiallypoignant. Buy it. Read it. Wellworth the time and money.

"Trapeze, Part One"

''WHOEVER thought," Rosie sighed, as the plane circled OrlyField, "when I was trick-ridin* in rodeos that I'd ever see this?"

'See what?" inquired Jeannie Kraus, facing away from theround window to look at Rose.

"That," Rosie pointed. "ParisParis in the spring!"

"Yeah," Jeannie agreed. "Youcould've married a cowboy and belookin' at a sunset in Montana."

"Or the rear end of a horse,"Rosie murmured.

The Seat Belt and No Smokingsigns flashed on. The plane landed

Fay and Rosie Alexander fileddown the portable stairs, followedby Eddie Ward, Willie and JeannieKraus, Grace Killian and the beau-tiful Sally Marlowe, brought overto double for Gina Lollabrigida.

At customs a man from Hecht-Lancaster Productions came up, in-troduced himself. The group separ-ated and were driven off in taxis.

Settling back in the taxi,Rosie reached for Fay's hand."Nervous, Honey?"

"No," he said, listening tothe blaring horns."Excited, aren'tOU9"

"You bet," said Rosie, turn-ing for her first close-up look atthe city every woman dreams about.

"In all my years in show bus-iness," says Fay, "I never exper-ienced such treatment. The re-spect! I'll never forget it aslong as I live."

"A chauffered car at our dis-posal," interjects Rosie. "And,every day, after the shooting, amasseur was sent to Fay's privatedressing room. They even gaveJeannie and me jobs as extras. Youknow what they made us do? Goshopping, that's what! 'Just besure you're back by 5 to pick upyour pay checks' they said.

"See this?" Fay extends anattractive money clip made from asilver French coin. "Tony Curtisgave it to me. All these years,"he laughs, "and I never blew it."

"He prizes that more than themedal given to him by Cecil B. DeMille." Rosie turns the money-clipover in her hand. "Imagine that!"

THE FIRST scenes were notgoing well. Dave Sharp, the topstunt man in Hollywood had beenbrought over to do the "fall" BurtLancaster takes in the beginning

of the picture - the fall thatleaves him embittered and crippled

It was a complicated fall, and dangerous. The stunt man hadto fake missing the triple, hitthe net, bounce up fingertip tocatch the trap, fall again andbounce out of the net to land inthe center ring.

The "landing" area was stac-ked with crushed cardboard boxes, the ring mat layed over that.

Sharp refused to do it andwent back to Hollywood. WillieKraus tried it and got hurt. TwiceHurt was reluctant to use Fay. Ifanything happened to Fay the pic-ture was in jeopardy. The "triple"was the high point of the film.

Delays continued. Costsmounted. Tempers flared. In des-peration they turned to Fay.

"Tomorrow," it was agreed, and they broke for the day, eachperson leaving with an air ofweariness and unease.

The suspense in and aroundCirque D'Hiver, where they werefilming TRAPEZE, was almost un-bearable. Grips and light men mov-ed in the grey morning atmospherewith a silence and a grim deter-mination that was nerve-shatteringExecutives huddled. People spokein whispers.

Fay, in tights, came on theset.

Sir Carol Reed, the eminentBritish director stood in the

ring. "We've got to get it thefirst time, gentlemen. In ONEtake."

Cameras for "safety shots"were stationed in key positions.Burt Lancaster walked around them."Don't muff it, boys, I can't af-ford to have Fay try it twice."And then, almost in an undertone, his fists clenched. "God help us,I can't afford to have him do itat all!"

The scene started. Fay swungout, missed, bounced, missed thecatch trap, hit the net and cata-paulted....out....and across thering to land in the designatedarea.

His lean body hit, sprawled, and was still. The cameras contin-ued to roll.

**I saw blood coming from thetop corner of his forehead, nearhis right eye," says Rosie, herface tense in the retelling. "Iwanted to scream and run over butI couldn't, I couldn't move!...Itwas like an inner voice was warn-ing me not to ruin the scene!"

"It's a take," Reed called. But Fay Alexander never moved.
