The volcanic Port- uguese island of Madeira, in the Atlantic Ocean near the Canary Island, is famed for its lush gardens, mild cli- mate and fantastic food. Doctors have told him it is remarkable he can walk around without crutches so soon after the operation. He said: “I have been told the muscle around the knee is in very good condition because I kept myself so fit when I was playing cricket and umpiring. “I can walk around the house and take a short walk up the lane, but I have a driver for longer distances.” He is not expected to be able to drive for six weeks.
