CARL JUNG

Early Life Born in 1875 His mother was prone to depression and

Carl feared her – led to distrust of women's mental state

Developed fear of education due to bullying by his classmates

Early Career

Studied medicine at Basel University Worked in a psychiatric asylum where

he wrote his first book on techniques of word association.

Sent his book to the

notable scientist Freud

beginning their 6 year

friendship

Freud and Jung

Studied for years under Freud developing his own theories that branched off of Freud's

Largely disagreed with Freud's insistence on sexual motivation in phycology

Created separate theories of Dream analysis, and the unconscious

Dream Analysis

Developed idea of subject level The dreamer projects his own philological state

in dreams Mother = Feminine side Believed firmly in feuds theory of dream

interpretation and merely attempted to add to it

Collective Unconscious The unconscious works through archetypes Archetypes are innate mental themes about

types of people Mothers behave in caring and supportive

ways due to their mental mother archetype. Believed in the importance of self achieved

through development and unity of both the conscious and unconscious minds

Unconscious doesn’t develop as it is universal from birth

Archetypes

Universally effecting all humans Used to explain how similar character

traits in parents or mentors develop similarly in all parts of the world

Do you believe that the presence of archetypes proves

the existence of a collective unconscious?

Personal Unconscious

People develop personal symbols based on life experience

If a person is nearly dies or simply is hurt in a fall they may see heights as a symbol for death and pain.

Often varies from the collective unconscious interpretation

Do you believe that fears are all rooted in life

experience and the personal unconscious?

Introverts – Look inwards for emotional and philological stability

Extroverts – rely on intimacy with others for stability.

Is it better to be an introvert or an extrovert or are they both viable ways to live?

Criticisms Believed that Jung had no definitive

proof for any of his ideas Difficult to provide research that could

either back or dispute his theory's
