Types of Earth Compaction Equipment

Smooth-drum vibratory Roller

• Plain Steel vibratory Roller.• Self Propelled Type.• Weighing From 5 to 15 Tonnes. • Used for Ordinary Compaction Work where deep

compaction is not required.• These Roller May Have One Front and Two Rear

Wheels.• The Front Wheels being usually larger in diameter

and the first one being winder.

Smooth Wheel Roller Conti.

• Weight of roller may be increased by the filling water or sand ballast in hollow cylinder.

• These roller are effective in compacting granular Soil, Such as Sand , gravel and Crushed stone.

Smooth-drum vibratory Roller

Tamping Roller

• High speed,non-vibratory type roller.• Self propelled type.• 4 steel-padded wheels equipped with a small

blade.• Working speed- 8-12mph.• Effective on all soils except pure sand• The pad are tampered with an oval or

rectangular face

• Face of pad is smaller then its base.

• Roller moves over the surface, the feet pentrates the soil to produce kneading action and a pressure to mix and compact the soil over the surface.

Sheep Foot Rollers• For compacting earth work in embankments and

canals(Where compaction deep into the layer of earth is required)

• This gives best result in compaction when the soil is clay or predominantly cohesive.

• The sheep foot rollers may weight upto 15 tones or more.• Travel at a speed of 25 KMPH.• As roller moves over the surface the feet penetrate the soil to

produce a kneading action and a pressure to mix a compact the soil from bottom to top layer

• With respect passages of the roller, the penetration of feet decreases.

Pad-drum vibratory Roller

• Effective on soil with up to 50% of the material having a PI of 5 or greater.

• These rollers are designed specifically for trench work.• The drums of the roller extend beyond the sides of the

roller body so the compaction can be accomplished adjacent to the trench work.

• Width – 24-38 inch.• These eliminates the need to have control cables

dragged around the construction site.

Pneumatic- Tyred Rollers•It consists a base or a platform mounted between two axles.•The rear of which has one more wheel than the front.•Most suitable for compacting fine – grained soil and well graded sends.•Ballasting is done using either water, sand or pig iron in order to increase the self weight.
