CANAL DAYS ARE BACKIt was only two years ago when

New Havens Canal Days festivalwas close to throwing in the towel. Now, as it prepares to setup for its2011 season, the festival is back ontrack.

Since 2009 when we had cutsome things back, we are prettymuch back to a full force festival. We are kind of back to where weused to be, said Jon Stauffer, presi-dent of the New Haven FestivalCommittee.

Stauffer has been involved withthe festival since he was a just ayoung Boy Scout volunteering forCanal Days cleanup. The festivalslong history stretches back to the50s, when a canal boat was broughtto New Haven and grew in the 60swith a community-wide Centennialcelebration, coordinated by a vastnumber of volunteers. That traditionof community involvement andvolunteerism continues at CanalDays over 50 years later.

The whole festival itself is atradition really, Stauffer said. Theoverall general atmosphere, its kindof like homecoming for the entiretown.

In 2009, then festival chairmanCraig Robison announced that due tothe economic climate, Canal Dayswasnt going to happen. About aweek later, however, the NewHaven-Adams Township ParkDepartment partnered with thefestival to host activities inSchnelker Park, relieving the eventof a hefty $12-13,000 in insurancecosts.

Since then, Stauffer said thebudget has allowed the festival tobring back old favorites like theAmazing Race event, the entertain-ment stage and a printed festivalguide. Carnival rides on the Midwayreturn, managed again this year byBurton Brothers Amusements.

In 2010, attendance was estimatedaround 10,000. With Canal Daysbeing the first area festival of thewarm weather season, the turnout isnot likely to disappoint this year.

We like to think of ourselves asthe festival that kicks off the wholeseason, Stauffer said.

More details regarding the festivalwill be released on its website,www.newhavencanaldays.com.

  • 8/6/2019 East Allen County Times - May 2011

    2/16

For so many families, summer camp is a familytradition and somethingboth children and parentslook forward to each year. For thousands of otherfamilies, however, it feelsalmost counterintuitive. Why would a parent wantto send their child awayfor weeks, even months

out of the year?In Wolcottville, Ind.,

Camp Lakewood offers anoption for parents whowant their kids to get thecamp experience but dontwant them to do it alone.

Family Camp takesplace during the lastweekend of July at CampLakewood and invites

entire families to bunk inprivate cabins, communitycabins, or sleep under thestars on tented campsites.Camp fees include notonly lodging and meals, but also experiences forthe whole family.

Camp Lakewood is partof a cooperative campingministry known as Impact2818. The ministry nowhas seven campsthroughout the state.

In addition to FamilyCamp at Camp Lakewood,

there is Mother-ChildCamp in Pine Village, Ind.at Pine Creek Camp. Theexperience is for childrenwho are not yet ready togo it alone, but whosemothers are eager forthem to experience campculture.

Weve seen a trend infamilies wanting to gettogether and spend timeaway from the computerand video games anddoing some of the things

that they used to do whenthey were kids, saidcamp manager KarenHamaker. She hasmanaged Camp Lakewoodsince September. Thingsthey valued as a kid, theywant that for their ownkids.

Hamaker also sees thebenefit of childrenspending the summer ontheir own as part of theirother programs.

When you have a childthat is elementary age,

what you want to see as aparent is for them todevelop some of thoseindependent skills, shesaid. I love it when I seea kid for the first timeshoot a bow and arrow onthe target. Its such afeeling of accomplishmentfor them. When parentssee their kid come backwith that new found confi-dence, they see the valuein that for them.

    Camp Lakewood uses a

42-foot-tall swing duringone of its many cabinactivities. Cabin bunk-mates work as a team topull a rope, lifting theswing and its passenger tothe top. Then they let go,

    dropping the swing quickly.

When a third gradercan strap in and swing at32 MPH, it gives themconfidence that they cando anything and that justtranslates to everythingelse. You get to put [thatconfidence] into practiceat home and at school,Hamaker said.

To help children reducetheir nerves about leavinghome for the first time,

Hamaker stressed theimportance of matchingthe childs interests andage to the appropriatecamp atmosphere.

Our uniqueness is thateverything is geared to

elementary elements withthe zip line, the giantswing, Hamaker said. So, we are not askingelementary kids to dothings that only highschool aged kids coulddo.

LIVESTRONG Leader is positively powerfulPain is temporary, quitting lasts

    forever. - Lance Armstrong

Jon Colbert is not a quitter. Hispersonal relationship with JesusChrist and love for his family givehim the strength to push forwardeach day living with cancer.

Colbert was selected as the 2011LIVESTRONG Leader to representthe state of Indiana and his congres-sional district at One Voice AgainstCancer Lobby Day May 23-24 inWashington, DC. Organizations at the event are not thereto ask for money, but to champion the funding of cancerresearch, navigation systems and cancer screeningprograms.

Colbert was diagnosed with prostate cancer in April2008, however he noticed changes in his body over eightyears prior. Doctors did not look for the disease becausehe was young, active and healthy in every way. Colbertwent through hormone therapy and radiation. Because thecancer went undetected in early stages, it became aggres-sive and surgery could not stop its spread to other parts ofhis body. Two years after his diagnosis, the cancer metas-tasized to his bones. Now, he is on chemotherapy.

Colbert has stage four incurable cancer.Right after the diagnosis, Colberts brother gave him a

yellow LIVESTRONG bracelet, a symbol of Lance

Armstrongs nonprofit organizationto help find cures for cancer.Colbert soon learned howArmstrongs positive outlook on lifeand active lifestyle helped himsuccessfully overcome both testic-ular and brain cancer.LIVESTRONG connected Colbertwith other people dealing withcancer. The support group madeColbert aware how important it was

to stay positive and overcome obsta-cles while living with the disease.

Erin Raber noticed Colberts positive attitude towardlife after getting to know him as a long time client atPhresh Creative Hair Concepts, where she is a stylist. ForRaber, Colbert is an inspiration.

He has had cancer pretty much since she met him andhe has never focused on talking about it with her, saidJeni Chandler, who works with Raber at Phresh. He isfunny and would talk about fun parts of life.

He still through it all is the most optimistic person Ihave ever met. He knows his cancer is terminal, but hesimply says, These are the cards I was dealt and I amgoing to work with what I have. All of us at Phresh arecompletely inspired and moved by him and his amazingoutlook on life.

House of grace. It isthe Greek meaning ofCharis House, a nonprofitorganization in FortWayne. Inside the home, the lives of homeless

women and their childrentake a turn for the betterwith the help of volunteersproviding food, shelter, safety, education and recu-peration.

Associates fromLutheran Hospitals Child-birth Suites recentlydelivered more than 1,200non-perishable food,

This is the second yearthat Lutheran staff andphysicians have initiatedand organized this effort, said Mindy Brown, nursemanager of ChildbirthSuites at LutheranHospital. We have funwith it because we make it

a competition with teamsand we track progress.

After Lutheran staffdelivered donations, theywere guided on a tour ofthe newly constructed

homeless shelter. Sincetheir visit, Lutheran nurseshave decided to organize acookout for the nonprofitorganization in the nearfuture.

Making the effort tohelp others outside ofwork is the core purposeand it demonstrates thatwe genuinely care about

Inspired so much that Phresh decided toput together a fundraiser.

The first thought was for thisfundraiser to benefit Jon and his family, but he has bigger plans, Chandler said.He doesnt want any of the proceeds. Hewants the proceeds to go to LIVE-

STRONG because they help cancerpatients and a lot of cancer patients do notknow of the support that is out there. Hismission while he is still with us is tospread the word about LIVESTRONG andmen getting prescreened for cancers.

The fundraiser Aug. 6 at PhreshCreative Hair Concepts will be one of thefirst to benefit LIVESTRONG in FortWayne, according to Chandler. Mensdress shirts created by local designer Jon-Paul Capito will be modeled in a fashionshow, then auctioned off. A websitecampaigning the fundraiser and offeringtickets for sale will launch in June.

Next to skin cancer, prostate cancer isthe most common cancer found in Amer-ican men. One out of six men will have

prostate cancer in his lifetime. It tends tobe a slow-growing cancer, but for some, itcan be aggressive. Although prostatecancer can be successfully treated, attimes it is overlooked. Screenings candetect the disease early, sometimes evenbefore symptoms develop when treat-

ments are most effective. If detected early, the chance of survival is near 100 percent.Colberts mission is to make all men

aware of prostate cancer and realize theimportance of getting a simple, yearlyblood test to check their prostate-specificantigen (PSA).

Colbert continues to fight the battlewith the support of his wife, Rhonda andtheir two sons, Joshua and Nathan.Nathan and his wife Lauren are expectinga baby in October.

Colbert and Rhonda are excited to meettheir first grandchild.
