POPULATION STATISTICS AND RELIGION Population: 23,142,460 Area:13,892mi. Capital City: Taipei City Density:1,730mi. Religion: Combinations of a polytheistic

chinese religion, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism and few Christianity.

GOVERNMENT

There is a multi party democracy. The president was Ma Ying-jeou. The prime minister is Wu Den-yih. They are a republic of China.

ECONOMY Taiwan has developed a capitalist economy. They are decreasing in foreign trade. Their agriculture is strong. 1.08% is poverty. Electronics, communications and information

technology are there top 3 industries. Their GPD is 423 billion.

HISTORY OF COUNTRY Taiwan was first settled by aboriginals who came to Taiwan

about 4000 years ago. But, eventually Taiwan was overran by Han immigrants. Before the Duch ruled in 1624 there was the Kingdom of

Middag. It lasted from 1540 until 1732. The leader was named Keizer Van Middag and was known to

be one of the greatest ruler in Taiwans history.

Hot and Humid Monsoons and lots of rain

GEOGRAPHY

Runs through the middle of the Tropic of Cancer

It is flat to gently rolling plains in the west 90% of the population lives in the forest-

covered mountains in the east There are 5 main different Mountain ranges

in Taiwan… The Central Mountain Range, the Syue Mountain Range, the Yushan Mountain Range, the Alishan Mountain Range and the East Coast Mountain Range.

REQUIREMENTS FOR VISITING, CURRENCY EXCHANGE RATE, AND BEST TIME TO VISIT Currency: 1 American dollar is worth 29 of their ‘New Taiwan

Dollar.’ Requirements for visiting: In order to visit you need a visa. No criminal record

as verified by the airport. You need a passport valid for at least 6 months and a confirmed return ticket.

Best time to Visit: Between June and August is a bad time to go

because of the humidity and the heat is unbearable. In March and April it is a beautiful time to go. Also, there is a pilgrimage which is one of the biggest pilgrimages in the world!

REGIONAL FOODS, DELICACIES AND CULTURE Pork seafood, rice, and soy are very common

ingredients. jiû-hî keⁿ is a typical dish: thickened soup

with cuttlefish covered in fish paste. Stinky tofu is a delicacy - The aroma of stinky

tofu is intimidating at first but can be an acquired taste. The tofu is served as rectangular cubes. There are a variety of forms.

ATTRACTIONS The National Concert Hall- Chinese and international symphony

orchestras and choirs performances are held here. The National Revolutionary Martyrs' Shrine- It is dedicated to the

people who sacrificed their lives fighting for the Republic of China.

Taipei 101- At 509 meters, it is by far the tallest building in the world.

The Botanical Gardens- a beautiful lotus pond and large gardens lined with a wide variety of plants and trees.

Yangming Park- A large, colorful garden full of mountain flowers and shaded by many trees.

CURRENT EVENTS Today in Taiwan the Department of health

announced that people who have a high body temperature for over 48 hours can receive free influenza medication from now to Feb. 28. Today Chen Guangbiao,a billionaire from China donated 6.8 million dollars to charity groups throughout Taiwan.
