March 2011 East HVDC Converter Staons Interface Project AltaLink (North) AltaLink is proposing some slight changes to its proposed Heartland Substaon and Transmission Line Project to accommodate ATCO Electric’s proposed Eastern Alberta Direct Current (DC) Transmission Line. ATCO Electric is proposing to build a 500 kV DC line from north of Fort Saskatchewan to the Brooks area which will e into AltaLink’s proposed Heartland Substaon to connect to the rest of Alberta’s electric system. This work is required to e ATCO’s transmission line to AltaLink’s proposed Heartland Substaon and is known as the East HVDC Converter Staons Interface Project. We want your input on the following proposed changes to AtlaLink’s facilies: • expanding the proposed Heartland Substaon 20 metres (66 feet) to the west from 220 x 260 metres (722 x 853 feet) to 220 x 280 metres (722 x 918 feet) to connect the proposed ATCO Eastern Alberta DC Transmission Line Project • reroung approximately 350 metres (1,148 feet) of the proposed Heartland 500 kV line (1206L/1212L) 70 metres (230 feet) to the west as it enters the Heartland 12S Substaon to allow for the connecon of ATCO’s proposed Eastern Alberta DC Transmission Line Please refer to the enclosed map for more informaon. These alteraons will only occur if both the Heartland Transmission Project and ATCO Electric’s Eastern Alberta DC Transmission Line Project are approved by the Alberta Ulies Commission (AUC). East HVDC Converter Stations Interface Project AltaLink (North)

AltaLink is proposing some slight changes to its proposed Heartland Substation and Transmission Line Project to accommodate ATCO Electric’s proposed Eastern Alberta Direct Current (DC) Transmission Line. ATCO Electric is proposing to build a 500 kV DC line from north of Fort Saskatchewan to the Brooks area which will tie into AltaLink’s proposed Heartland Substation to connect to the rest of Alberta’s electric system. This work is required to tie ATCO’s transmission line to AltaLink’s proposed Heartland Substation and is known as the East HVDC Converter Stations Interface Project.

We want your input on the following proposed changes to AtlaLink’s facilities:

• expanding the proposed Heartland Substation 20 metres (66 feet) to the west from 220 x 260 metres (722 x 853 feet) to 220 x 280 metres (722 x 918 feet) to connect the proposed ATCO Eastern Alberta DC Transmission Line Project

• rerouting approximately 350 metres (1,148 feet) of the proposed Heartland 500 kV line (1206L/1212L) 70 metres (230 feet) to the west as it enters the Heartland 12S Substation to allow for the connection of ATCO’s proposed Eastern Alberta DC Transmission Line

Please refer to the enclosed map for more information.

These alterations will only occur if both the Heartland Transmission Project and ATCO Electric’s Eastern Alberta DC Transmission Line Project are approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC).

If ATCO Electric’s Eastern Alberta DC Transmission Line Project is proposed to be on or near your property you should receive information from ATCO Electric.

What happens during construction?Depending on where you are in relation to the proposed substation and transmission lines, you may hear or see:

• noise and construction crews

• installation of steel transmission structures

• selective clearing of trees and vegetation along the right-of-way

• stringing of wires on new transmission structures

Throughout the construction process, AltaLink and its contractors will follow all applicable Alberta environmental legislation and requirements. AltaLink will use appropriate techniques to protect water quality, soil, vegetation and wildlife habitat.

Any noise associated with the construction and/or operation of the new facilities will comply with the AUC’s Noise Control Rule 12 and all other relevant noise regulations and standards. The AUC Noise Control Rule can be found on the AUC’s website at www.auc.ab.ca.

How can you provide input?AltaLink’s representatives will contact landowners, residents and occupants near the proposed project by phone or in person to discuss the project, gather feedback and address questions or concerns.

We consider landowner comments in our project evaluations and summarize the input received from landowners in our
