East Lancashire Railway and Bury Transport Museum are in the heart of Bury, easily accessible by all forms of transport with Bury Interchange only five minutes walk away. Ring GMPTE on 0161 228 7811 for Metrolink timetable information.
Coach drop-off points are located outside Bury Bolton Street Station with a 30 minutes waiting time and on Castlecroft Road with all day parking.
» Access Access to Bury Transport Museum is available from our entrance on Castlecroft Road. The museum is fully accessible for visitors in wheelchairs with lifts to the platform levels and the education room, although motorised chairs may have difficulty on the cobbled section of the floor. Blue badge parking is available alongside the museum building for easy access to the main entrance.

» AIM OF THE TRIPThe aim of the programme is to examine how Bury town centre has changed since the Victorian times, comparing maps of the period and old photos with the town’s present day appearance. By the end of the trip the students will have gained a greater understanding of how an industrial town develops and the impact industry can have on a community.

A unique opportunity for school groups to visit three museums in one day! Bury Transport Museum, The Fusilier Museum and Bury Art Gallery, Museum + Archives are working together to offer a memorable day of learning outside the classroom.
» ACTIVITIES & ORGANISATIONBury Art Gallery, Museum + Archives:Pupils will learn about Bury’s industrial past and significant figures such as John Kay. Using their creative skills they will have a go at inventing their own machine.The Fusilier Museum: Pupils will learn about the British army during the Victorian era. The session will focus on the Crimea War and advances in journalism and photography.
Bury Transport Museum: A timeline as well as large exhibits demonstrate how transport systems changed during Victorian times. Pupils will also look at advertising and make some coin rubbings.

» AIM OF THE TRIPThe aim of this programme is to develop the basic practical fieldwork skills necessary to work safely in an urban environment. By the end of the trip the students will know how to work constructively in small groups to acquire and collate their data and how to complete effective group activities such as traffic surveys and land use surveys. By working in a town centre, the children will be able to contrast their data with that collected in their school’s locality.

Originally built in the 1840’s and 1850’s, the line was closed in the 1970’s. It re-opened as a heritage railway in the 1980’s, currently running between Heywood and Rawtenstall. Buildings, stock, locos, infrastructure and environs are preserved in the image of the 1950’s and 1960’s as far as possible.
Train services operate on weekends through-out the year and from Wednesday to Friday between April and September, facilitating educational and leisure access to hidden corners of the Irwell Valley along the line.

The museum re-opened in March 2010 following a £3 million refurbishment.
The beautifully restored 1848 Castlecroft Goods Warehouse building is home to a fascinating collection. There is a variety of vintage road and rail vehicles, original artefacts and interactive displays which combine to illustrate how transport systems developed and operated in the Bury area over the last 200 years. The new education room can also be booked for use.
