Buffalo City 360 welcomes editorial contributions and encourages

readers to use the magazine as a platform for sharing their views

TO OUR WORLDWelcomeOne of the surest and most welcome signs that your publication is

hitting the mark is when complete strangers start coming up to you, virtually on a daily basis, with comments and suggestions.

This has been my experience over the past few months, and I greatly appreciate all the positive feedback and great snippets of advice on how to make our magazine better – much of which we have already implemented, or are in the process of incorporating over the next few editions.

One of the most immediately useful tips we received was from Hannes de Klerk of Café Basil in Berea. I was hugely impressed to find that Hannes not only had a copy of Buffalo City 360 on every table in his restaurant, he was also actively encouraging his customers not only to read the magazine, but to take it home with them.

“People love the magazine,” Hannes said. “The only complaint I have is that, because it’s such a glossy, high quality publication, people don’t realise that that it’s a free publication. So they tend to, very reluctantly, put it back on the table when they leave … or glance around guiltily when they slip it into their bags!”

Thanks to this feedback, our cover now sports a Free – Please Take One sticker, which should make taking us home with you just a pleasure, not a guilty one! Thanks, Hannes.

To all our others readers, please let us have your comments and suggestions, too. We are committed to making 360 a magazine of which all of Buffalo City can be proud, and we rely on your feedback to tell us where we can improve, be it in terms of editorial, distribution or the general look and feel of the magazine.

Finally, a warm welcome to the thousands of visitors who will be rolling into our city in the days and weeks to come for what will undoubtedly be a well-deserved break.

On behalf of all residents and tourism product owners, Buffalo City 360 welcomes you to our shores. Whatever your holiday programme, we know you’re going to have a fabulous time. But please remember to holiday safely and responsibly, and to take care of our beautiful surroundings. We would love you to be able to come back to same splendor year and after year.

Happy holidays!

FOREWORD

The holiday season is upon us, and throughout our city there is a festive mood as we prepare

for a plethora of fun activities to celebrate this special time of the year.

A special word of welcome to the many visitors holidaying in our beautiful region – we are confident that you will enjoy your stay with us,

making many memories that you and your family will treasure for years to come.

Central to a happy and memorable holiday, however, is making sure that we all enjoy our holiday activities in a safe and responsible manner.

To this end, Buffalo City Metro has launched a comprehensive safety campaign involving all of our law enforcement partners – including BCMM and provincial traffic services, BCMM Law Enforcement, BCMM Disaster Management and BCMM Amenities – to ensure that our residents and holidaymakers are well protected and looked after during these busy weeks.

The theme of our campaign this year is “2013 Awaits You, Be Responsible!” Our message is clear: Whatever you do, whatever your holiday plans entail and wherever it takes you, think of your future and make sure that you are here to enjoy all that the New Year brings with your friends and loved ones.

BCM prioritises your safety, and we will deploy more than 120 dedicated safety and disaster management personnel who will be sacrificing their own special family time to be on call 24 hours a day.

But we also need you to do your bit. Ensuring the safety of our residents and visitors is a huge and collective responsibility. So while we, as a Metro, will work tireless through our various law enforcement units to keep you safe, we also rely on all of you to assume personal responsibility for your own safety.

Whether it’s being extra vigilant while driving or using our roads, making sure that you don’t drink and drive, guarding against road rage or negligence – make sure that you do everything in your power to ensure your own safety, and the safety of the people in your care.

To all our residents and the many thousands of people who will be visiting us over this holiday period, I wish you a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

East London Zoo – which boasts more than 300 animals from 43 different species – has a good relationship with the local SPCA and takes its responsibility for animal care very seriously.

If it’s been a while since you’ve visited the East London Zoo – you’re missing out! With exciting new renovations taking place and beautiful,

natural surroundings, a day at the zoo makes for a perfect outing.

East London Zoo – which boasts more than 300 animals from 43 different species – has a good relationship with the local SPCA and takes its responsibility for animal care very seriously. It is also affiliated with the African Association of Zoos Aquaria and Botanical Gardens (PAZAAB), an organisation which sets high standards for the welfare of animals.

Current renovations include a facelift of the main entrance and making the entire zoo more accessible for disabled visitors.

Some must-see attractions include:

bengAl tigersElegant and fearsome, Jasmine and Sultan are

extremely rare and highly endangered. Tigers, which weigh in between 250kg and 300kg, are surprisingly very good swimmers, but not very good climbers. Globally, the number of Bengal tigers has dropped dramatically in recent years. Our zoo is doing its part by trying to breed these majestic cats.

White lionsAnother must-see attraction is the stunning

white lions – not to be mistaken for albino lions. White lions have the recessive white gene from both parents, causing their hair to grow white. Lacking the necessary camouflage to hunt successfully, white lions have trouble surviving in the wild.

All AboArd the smArtie trAin!This old East London tradition is always a source

of enjoyment for children and nostalgia for adults who visit the zoo. It runs continuously during weekends and on public holidays. Kids can also enjoy rides on the zoo’s small boats and Ferris wheel.

PlAyful PrimAtesFrom raucous chimpanzees Randy and Zeb, to the

chattering baboons and more unusual Samango monkeys, the zoo’s playful primates are always keen to put on a show for visitors. They will yell, jump, swing and dance for approval and attention, and have very special and distinct personalities. Don’t forget to pay a visit to little Smoochie, the cheeky Capuchin monkey!

GET CLOSE TO NATURE – The East London Zoo is one of the only zoos in South Africa set in a natural forest. “Most zoos have to attempt to create the outdoorsy, natural, serene atmosphere. We don’t have to – it comes

naturally and it is authentic,” says Kerotse, the superintendent of the zoo.

Cheeky CroCsHagar, the Nile crocodile, is always the source of

much gasping and squealing. He is the only croc at the zoo and spends his days lazing in the sun, no doubt amused at the wide eyes of fearful children who peer into his enclosure. Nile crocodiles can grow to be extremely large and can tip the scales at up to a ton! They also grow very old, reaching up to 100 years.

AfriCAn roCk PythonsThe East London Zoo boasts a pair of African

Rock Pythons. Indigenous and non-venomous, they are a popular attraction well worth a visit to the snake habitats.

JAguArKnown for its sleek, aesthetic beauty, the

stunning Jaguar is a solitary jungle cat. Jaguars, relative to their size, have the most powerful bite of all big cats. They are smaller than the lion and tiger but known to be a lot more agile. They are skilled swimmers and climbers, and have a very unusual, unique look.

silky sungAZersThis beady-eyed, weird-looking terrestrial reptile

is the largest of all girdled lizards and is endemic to South Africa. It is also known as the ‘Giant Girdled Lizard’, but is given the name Sungazer due to its habit of perching with its nose upturned towards the sky.

Once you’ve worked up a thirst marvelling at our 43 mammal, 14 reptile and 26 bird species, be sure to stop off at the zoo kiosk for refreshments and light meals. Breakfast is served from 9am to 11am. The zoo is also the perfect party venue. Party fee per child includes entrance into the zoo, a boat and train ride, a party box with sweets, chips, a cold drink and an ice-cream. Raw peanuts are also available at the kiosk – certain animals love these as a treat!

oPen dAily from 9am to 5pm, with the last entry at 4.15pmentry is r28 (adults), r17 (kids & pen-sioners) and r11 for scholars in groups. Children under 3 are free.

There’s a scaly new attraction in town, but be warned – a visit to Apex Predators is definitely not for the ophidiophobes among us.

Situated 10km outside East London on the N6, Apex Predators Park is reportedly the biggest of its kind anywhere in the country, featuring some of

the most venomous slitheries, including the king cobra and Africa’s deadliest snake, the black mamba.

The park’s owner, Deon Nell, has had a love-affair with reptiles all his life and says that even as a small child he preferred snakes and other reptiles to puppies or budgies.

“I was born with it,” he says. “I love reptiles, and working with snakes in particular has been a life-long dream!”

Deon’s vision for Apex Predators is for it to be much more than just a tourist or entertainment attraction. He also wants the park to become a valued educational centre that will lead to greater understanding about these often misunderstood creatures.

“Education and conservation are key to my interest in the creatures,” he says.

“There is a lot of value in snakes that has not been

tapped into. For example, not many people know that small amounts of a boomslang’s venom can thin the blood, which can be used to treat heart conditions.”

He also wants the park to help people address their fear of snakes, and to introduce them to the beauty and, yes, the fragility of these animals.

“I want people to look at snakes in a new light … to see their beauty.”

Deon is also planning to include a volunteer training programme in handling the animals as well as an Apex Predators junior training programme.

Apex Predators Park forms part of the bigger Python Park, which features an array of other reptile species, including geckos, crocodiles, rock monitors, iguanas and tortoises.

“We wanted to create a destination where families can come and enjoy a great outing for the day,” says Python Park owner Wayne Chemaly. “It’s something great for East London and I’d like to see it become a buzzing tourist attraction.”

East London hosted the very first Grand Prix ever held in South Africa The 3.9km East London race track became operational in the early 1930s and hosted the very first South African Grand Prix in 1934. The race returned to the city in 1936 and was staged here every year until 1939, drawing the top European drivers of the time, including Bernd Rosemeyer, Richard “Dick” Seaman, Richard Shuttleworth and the 1939 winner Luigi Villoresi. World War 2 halted racing in 1939, but it was revived in 1960 as part of the Formula One circuit. East London again got the nod and hosted the race every year from 1960 to 1966, when it was relocated to the custom-built Kyalami track.

Craven Week started in East LondonCraven Week, which celebrates its 50th birthday in 2014, had its humble beginnings right here in East London. The brainchild of Springbok flank Piet Malan, Craven Week was endorsed by the late Dr Danie Craven. However, the task of organising and getting the very first Craven Week tournament off the ground in July 1964 was left to Port Rex teacher Jan Preuyt, a former Matie and Griqualand West player, and Dummy Taylor of Queen’s College.

Joan Harrison won Olympic gold when she was just 16 East London schoolgirl Joan Harrison was just 16 years old when she won a gold medal in the 100m backstroke at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. It would be another 44 years before another South African woman won Olympic gold in the pool (Penny Heyns won 100m and 200m breaststroke gold medals in Atlanta in 1996).

10 COOL THINGS

You probably already know that East London has the world’s only remaining dodo egg, and that ours is the only river port in the country. But Buffalo City and the surrounding Amathole region has more than a few interesting tricks up its collective sleeve.

The first powered flight in South Africa took place over nahoon French aviator Albert Kimmerling started off racing cars but became obsessed with flying after attending an exhibition by the Wright brothers in Paris. In December 1909 – just six years after Orville Wright wobbled into the sky – Kimmerling recorded the first powered flight in southern Africa over the Nahoon racecourse. Kimmerling managed to achieve an altitude of about six metres and a speed of about 30 miles per hour. By the end of February 1910 Kimmerling had made three subsequent flights at Sydenham Hill, near Orange Grove.

Mrs ball’s chutney was developed in Fort JacksonThere are few things more iconically South African than a bottle of Mrs Ball’s – and it all started right here in the Buffalo City area. In 1852 Henry James Adkins married Elizabeth Sarah Spalding in King William’s Town, settling in the nearby village of Fort Jackson to run a general dealership. Sarah Adkins started making chutney commercially in about 1870. The chutney tradition was carried forward by her daughter, Amelia, who, having married Herbert Sandleton Ball, started marketing her mother’s delicious condiment as Mrs Ball’s.

Amathole Museum has the second-largest mammal collectionKing William’s Town Amathole Museum is home to the second-largest collection of mammals in the southern hemisphere. Pushing 130 years old, it is the sixth oldest museum in the country, gaining international prominence as the final resting place of Huberta, the world famous wandering hippo. In addition to its spectacular mammal collection – including giraffes and elephants – the museum also has a striking toy collection, including one of the first Barbie dolls ever made.

Our engineers developed the dolosA dolos is a concrete block in a complex geometric shape weighing up to 20 tons, used in great numbers to protect harbour walls from the erosive force of ocean waves. It was developed in East London in 1963. Since then, literally millions of these intriguing shapes have been constructed and put to use around the globe, and are found in most of the major coastal cities of the world. They are also used in several rivers in the Pacific Northwest of the US to control erosion, prevent channel migration and create and restore salmon habitats.

Museum curator Dr Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer discovered a prehistoric fish believed to have died out 65 million years agoThe coelacanth, a rather aesthetically challenged 1.5-metre monstrosity, was discovered by East London scientist and museum curator Dr Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer in a local fisherman’s catch on 23 December 1938. The fish, widely considered an actual living fossil, was believed to have been extinct since the end of the cretaceous period, over 65 million years ago. Fossils of the coelacanth have been found that date back over 350 million years.

One of the oldest remaining buildings in East London, it still houses the original gallows and death row structure. Famous prisoners who have been incarcerated here include notorious serial killer Daisy de Melker and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, jailed for political activity during the apartheid era.

East Londoners gathered in Duncan Village last month to remember one of the city’s most heroic figures, Sister Aidan Quinlan, who died in

the infamous 1952 riots here.An Irish-born doctor and medical missionary, Sister

Quinlan was driving home to the Peter Claver Mission in East London, where she ran a clinic, when her car was set on by an angry mob of political protestors.

Her car was stoned, overturned and set alight. Sister Quinlan died in the blaze, at the hands – tragically – of the people she most cared about and had spent three years working tirelessly to uplift.

According to East London Museum historian Zuko Blauw, the riot had started out as a routine meeting by the ANC, celebrating the removal of the lodger’s fee law against renters in Duncan Village.

Similar gatherings had taken place on the same day in Port Elizabeth and Kimberley.

At all three events, police were dispatched to disperse the crowds. The protesters stood their ground and police opened fire, sparking widespread rioting that culminated in at least nine deaths – though historians have long argued that the death toll was much higher than what was officially reported.

Sister Quinlan died clutching her rosary – when her body was recovered, her hand bones had become fused with the rosary, Blauw said.

“Most people in Duncan Village believe that it was hooligans who killed Sister Quinlan, because sober

community members who knew and loved her would never do such a thing,” he said.

Sister Quinlan’s bones and ashes are buried at Zeli Convent Cemetery (also known as Ezeleni graveyard) in King William’s Town. Her rosary is kept in the Roman Catholic Church headquarters archives in Johannesburg.

“While this tragic incident tainted Duncan Village, it forms part of our rich and profound history,” Blauw said. “It cannot and must not be forgotten, for in it lies a profound lesson, including the importance of Ubuntu.”

The 60th anniversary celebration honouring Sister Quinlan’s life was part of the process of closing the painful chapter in the city’s history in a respectful and dignified manner, Blauw said.

“Sister Quinlan was remembered by a community that misses her, still loves her and has fond memories of her and a community that says ‘forgive us, our beloved sister’.”

“This was an opportunity for a deep ethical reflection for everyone. We are closing this chapter so that we may recognise the other story of this day, which is a story of victory, and we will always remember those who died.”

Sister Quinlan was born in Kingwilliam’s Town (now Ballydesmond) in County Cork, Ireland on 3 December 1914. She became a Dominican nun and later came to South Africa to serve under her calling. She graduated as a medical doctor from the University of Witwatersrand and served the Duncan Village community with both medical and spiritual advice and care.

Officially opened to the public in December 1931, the East London Aquarium is one of the oldest in South Africa. And while it is by

no means the biggest, a number of unique displays make this facility well worth a visit.

Siani Tinely, Buffalo City’s chief of Marine Services, has been in charge of the aquarium for the past nine years and she brims with enthusiasm – not only about the facility’s subtle charms, but also about its important educational role in the community.

“We host a lot of school visits, and it is very exciting to see them marvelling at our diverse under-water world”, she says. “It really is a weird and wonderful landscape and the aquarium is one of the best opportunities for kids to learn about all the amazing things happening in the sea”.

Born and raised in East London, Siani’s love for animals has been a life-long affair.

“We were always hand-rearing animals at home. We also had horses at home and I loved being out at the stables. I even used to do my homework there.”

As a pupil at Hudson Park High School, Siani chose biology and zcience as her major subjects. This would be an early indicator of where her career path would lead – she went on to qualify as a marine biologist, obtaining a

BSc from the University of Port Elizabeth. Her position as BCM’s chief of Marine Services

entails managing the conservation and functionality of the aquarium, the beach and the coastal area throughout the metro.

“It’s an extremely demanding and challenging portfolio,” she says. “When I started out I was only focusing on the aquarium, but my responsibilities have grown and there are now several other sections under my watch.”

Siani meets these challenges with a firm commitment to hard work and ensuring that she excels at every task entrusted to her.

“My philosophy is just to keep doing my best for the aquarium and for the city as a whole,” she says.

She also pays tribute to her fellow aquarium staffers in ensuring the aquarium lives up to its responsibility as an educational centre.

“We have a big responsibility, especially to our previously disadvantaged children. For many of them, this is their only window into the amazing world under the sea. There is nothing more fulfilling than discovering new marine animals, helping them to survive and successfully rehabilitating injured animals.”

African penguinsThese rare and critically endangered

species are indigenous to the African coastline, but sadly more than 90% of this rare breed has been lost over the last 100 years. The East London Aquarium currently has about 35 African penguins that are breeding.

“The aquarium’s breeding African penguin colony is one of our milestones,” Siani says. “Some came here injured while others were washed up on the shore. We even have a gay penguin couple that have built a nest together and stay committed to each other.”

Three-flipper turtleBuddy the large three-flipper turtle

found refuge at the East London Aquarium after being washed up on the beach, unable to swim due to a seriously injured flipper. He has been nursed back to full health and has re-learnt how to swim after initially only being able to float on the water.

He has even started diving again, Siani says, which means aquarium staff will be able to release him back into the ocean in a few months’ time. Go say hello to Buddy before he bids the aquarium a fond farewell.

Professional singer, bass player, actress and voice artist Kerri Hiles tells us what she loves about her city.

I aM ... a professional singer, bass player, actress and voice artist. Also a semi-professional cheese-maker! Basically, I entertain people … or feed them.

I WaS BOrN ... in Pietermaritzburg but consider myself an East Londoner, having done most of my schooling here. I left East London the moment I finished matric and vowed never to return to the “sleepy town”, except to visit family. But I returned and have been living here most happily since the end of 2009.

I LIvE ... on a smallholding near the Kei Mouth turn-off from the N2, in an area known as Upper Kwelera.

EaST LONDON IS BEST KNOWN FOr ... Shamrock pies, Friesland milkshake, the coelacanth and surfing.

My favourite mall is definitely Hemingways and, for special occasions, my favourite restaurant is Grazia! When I am in the mood for some arts and culture, I go to either the Guild Theatre, Arts Theatre or the Alexander Playhouse.

EaST LONDON’S BEST-KEPT SECrET IS ... its geographic location ... most of my up-country friends believe it to be a suburb of PE. That, and the Giant Burger night at Inkwenkwezi.

MY FavOUrITE BUDGET OUTING IS ... to Beach Break at Nahoon Beach or Barefoot Café in Chintsa East.

TO GIvE BaCK TO MY COMMUNITY ... I like to get involved as a performer with charity events such as the McLelland Mother’s Day picnic at 2 Swans.

MY BUFFALO CITY

I aM ... the sole member and managing director of South African Bassie Travel Centre in Berea. I was born and raised in a small village called Nqamakwe in the former Transkei. I started Bassie Travel & Tours in Butterworth in 2005 before relocating the agency to East London in 2008.

I aM PrOUD OF ... East London’s status as one of the economic hubs of the Eastern Cape, and also of our many quality schools and beautiful coastline. Our city is also well known, deservedly so, for its tranquil lifestyle and close proximity to all major shopping areas.

MY FavOUrITE ... restaurant for business lunches and teas is definitely Roxys, which is within walking distance of my office. For dinner time, my favourite hangouts are Grazia on the beachfront and Prima Piatti.

I LOvE ... being able to go for a jog after a heavy day and seeing the lush, beautiful gardens and sea views in my neighbourhood. It’s so heartwarming to see so many old folks walking their dogs in the late afternoons and early mornings. I always feel that we are still lucky to have this priceless serene beauty.

THE BEST NEW DEvELOPMENT ... in East London is definitely Chamberlain Square in Berea. Watch this space, Berea is going to be one of the best hangouts in East London.

I GIvE BaCK ... to my community through on-the-job training programmes where I host third-year students from Walter Sisulu University for in-service skills development. I am also very involved with the Keep East London Clean movement and devote at least one week every year to clean up Berea, where my agency is situated.

MY vISION FOr OUr CITY IS ... a metro that is ready to provide the best tourism destination in South Africa, without limitations, and showcasing the birth places of all our living legends, including Nelson Mandela. I would also love to see the availability of most airline services, seven days a week, to ensure our economic viability. Finally, I dream of a metro that is able to host a major arts festival, such as Makufe or the North Sea Jazz Festival.

trees and shady caravan sites right on the banks of the river, Nature’s Rest is the

perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and simply be yourself. Situated a mere 7km from the East London Airport, the air of tranquillity and peacefulness is palatable in the valley from the moment you enter the resort.

Great care is taken to preserve the natural environment of the resort – a perfect setting for those with a love of nature. The lagoon estuary provides a paradise for birdwatching opportunities with over 100 bird species already documented within the resort boundaries, including weavers, kingfishers, cormorants, egrets, herons and even a pair of spotted eagle owls.

Nature’s Rest is close to the major town of East London, making it perfect for an easy weekend break as well as an extended holiday, and is a great place for family getaways. With its exquisite surroundings, children’s playground and trampoline, paddle boats, entertainment hall, swimming pool, homely

accommodation facilities, pet-friendly policy and friendly staff, you are overwhelmed by a sense of familiarity. It is as if somehow this place has always existed and you seem to have faint memories of having spent family holidays there yourself as a child.

Here, however, you will find yourself perfecting the art of resting – your only obligation being to relax in the beautiful tranquillity of mother nature.

The Eastern Cape still bears the indelible scars of 100 years of fierce frontier warfare which permanently shaped both the historical and cultural make-up of this fascinating region.

Not surprisingly, retracing the steps of the men and women who were involved in this brutal period of colonialism and conquest – and the brave pockets of resistance which sprung up throughout the region – has become a source of keen interest among cultural tourists.

Situated at the centre of this frontier heartland, Buffalo City is the natural point of departure on what promises to be an unparallelled journey of discovery, with numerous dedicated battlefield tours departing from the city.

And while rigorous enough to satisfy the most discerning history or military buff, these tours are broad enough in scope and emphasis to appeal to the widest cross-section of tourists.

As tour operator Rob Prentis of Edgeworld Tours notes, while battlefield tours may be historical in nature, they are essentially about the human dimensions of this turbulent period in the province’s history.

“It’s not just about battles and military strategies and weaponry,” he explains. “Yes, these elements come into it and are important, but battlefield tours are about so much more. They are about African nationalism, displacement, resistance, intellectualism and cultural heritage. And inevitably, they criss-cross the most beautiful terrain in all of Africa.”

Taking in historical cities such as Grahamstown and Fort Beaufort, which once housed the largest British military establishment in the southern hemisphere, battlefield tours are a window in a near-forgotten era of expansion and conquest. As such, they are steeped in the mainstays of war: brutality, murder and subjugation.

Situated at the centre of the frontier heartland, Buffalo City is the natural point of departure on what promises to be an unparallelled journey of discovery, with numerous dedicated battlefield tours departing from the city.

There is a great interest in historical and cultural heritage tours, not just here, but throughout the country.

But they also provide a fascinating glimpse of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances, where even the most personal of decisions could have history-altering ramifications.

“There is great interest in historical and cultural heritage tours, not just here, but throughout the country,” says Prentis. “What makes this region’s history so unique is the insidious, erosive nature of the battles that were waged here, and the massive consequences it had for the country as a whole.”

Frontier battlefield tours represent 100 years not only of direct warfare, but also of prolonged and relentless attempts to crush African nationalism. The principal battles during this period were the War of the Ax, Mlanjeni’s War and the Gcaleka Rebellion. Collectively, these three clashes shaped the very fabric of the region, leading directly to the

establishment of East London as a military port. Incorporating established tourism nodes such

as Hogsberg and Katberg, local battlefield tours have proven a popular add-on attraction for visitors of every level of interest. They appeal to those interested in history, but also to anyone with a keen sense of discovery and a desire to relive the rich cultural dimensions of a region which is aptly regarded as the cradle of African intellectualism.

There are numerous one-day tour options to choose from, while serious enthusiasts can immerse themselves in anything up to eight days of battlefield rediscovery.

The natural beauty of the region, awash in an abundance of fascinating local fauna and flora, set against some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country, ensures that battlefield tours are a sensory delight as much as they are a heritage odyssey.

It’s early summer and East London’s surfers are starting to ponder their surf-break options with a bit more care than usual. Winter is a no-brainer – lots of south-west swell,

westerly winds, so it’s more than likely to be Nahoon Reef. If the Reef is blown out or too big, another option might be the Corner (though some non-fans say it’s like kissing your sister!). Alternatively, Gonubie lefts, before the wind gets up, or even a dash out to Yellows. Here the locals are bizarrely faithful to their sometimes fickle home-break … and welcome you with open arms – mostly.

But summer brings a whole lot more variables – small swell, fluctuating swell direction, east winds that can pump for seven days solid and, of course, the seasonal influx of those who only surf when it’s a pleasantly warm day.

Early summer mornings with light offshore winds and smallish swell open up options like Eastern Beach and Bonza Bay – and you get to gloat when your hung-over buddies arrive at 10 just in time for the onshore.

Of course there are days when even a 4.30am

dawnie can’t beat the north-east onshore and you suddenly recall the joys of Igoda and Glen Eden – two minor miracles that can handle the ‘beasterly’ easterly.

Sometimes it’s just a case of getting as far as possible from the madding crowd and places like Kidd’s Beach or Chintsa will do nicely even though the hot talent may be at Queensberry Bay.

One of the pitfalls that every surfer has fallen foul of at some stage is to set off early on a Saturday morning for some slightly remote and therefore un-crowded break. It’s not perfect and your clever buddy knows just the spot that will be “operating big time” so off you go … but then the wind changes, or the rip picks up, or … (insert other diverse disappointments) and suddenly it’s a late-afternoon dash back to Nahoon Beach to get a quick wave in the mediocre shore-break before it gets dark.

So while summer requires some tricky decisions, the main thing is not to end up back in town with both your petrol tank and wetsuit dry.

If the Reef is blown out or too big, another option might be the Corner (though some non-fans say it’s like kissing your sister!) swells

CUISINE

INGrEDIENTS225g cold butter, diced350g plain flour100g golden caster sugar280g luxury fruit mince1 small eggicing sugar, to dustMETHODTo make the pastry, rub 225g cold, diced butter into 350g plain flour, then mix in 100g golden caster sugar and a pinch of salt. Combine the pastry into a ball – don’t add liquid – and knead it briefly. The dough will be fairly firm, like shortbread dough. You can use the dough immediately, or chill for later.

Preheat the oven to 200°C (fan 180°C). Line 18 cupcake or muffin tray holes with a thin layer of the pastry. Spoon a generous helping of the fruit mince into the pies. Cover each mince-filled hole with a round, flattened pastry “lid”, pressing the edges gently together to seal. You don’t need to seal them with milk or egg as they will stick on their own. (The pies may now be frozen for up to a month).Beat one small egg and brush the tops of the pies. Bake for 20 minutes until golden. Leave to cool in the tin for five minutes, then remove and place on a wire rack. To serve, lightly dust with icing sugar. They will keep for three to four days in an airtight container.

This holiday season, why not try your hand at serving up your own delicious sangria creations? It’s easier than you think!

Sangria is a wine punch typical of Spain, Portugal, México and Argentina. It normally consists of wine, chopped fruit, a sweetener and a small amount of added brandy. The fruit is chopped or sliced and includes

orange, lemon, lime, apple, peach, melon, berries, pineapple, grape, kiwi or mango. A sweetener such as honey, sugar, simple syrup or orange juice is added. Instead of brandy, other liquids such as lemonade or Sprite could also be used. Here are two easy recipes – one traditional, the other with a modern twist – to get your started on your journey of sangria discovery!

Enjoy the taste of summer!

Sweet, fruity, refreshing – nothing complements a hot day at the beach or a relaxing riverside picnic quite like a tasty sangria.

Marlene Neumann praised all the category winners for their entries, saying they

were all positive reflections of life in and around Buffalo City. In choosing an overall winner, however, she was swayed by the photograph that packed the biggest emotional punch.

“The winning photograph by Roberto Betta is a beautiful, powerful depiction of connection – the connection between the two lions, of course, but also equally importantly, the connection that we in East London are fortunate to still have with our beautiful surroundings … with the serenity and also the beauty of the wildlife that is right on our doorstep.

A special mention must be made of Andrew Beard’s gorgeous seascapes photograph which – with well over 200 ‘likes’ on the 360 Facebook page – won the coveted public’s choice award.

Thank you to our sponsors – Thomas River Historical Village, Go! magazine, Rob Pollocks, Marlene Neumann Fine Art Photographer and Getaway magazine for the great prizes.
