It was on the New River State Park Trail in Virginia. As we traveled up the mountain we commented that it seemed like the water was running uphill! (That should have been our first clue). We rode for twenty-five miles, then turned around, expecting a much easier ride back downhill. But we soon found out that, even though it “appeared” that we were going uphill, in reality, we were going downhill! Funny thing about the New River—it actually runs north instead of south! That meant going 25 miles back up hill! I was soon exhausted and thought that my nephew may have to carry me off the mountain! I guess I could say, “I was all in.” But there is another definition of being “All In” and that is the one that we will celebrate this month. To be “All In” is to be totally and fully committed and involved with something. As Christ Followers, our goal is to be “All In for Jesus”—totally committed to Him and doing what He calls us to do. I truly believe that Jesus is calling us to make Him famous in the Quad Cities and the Family Life Center will be a tool that Christ Church can use to reach many more people for Him. Saturday, August 25th Once again this year, Christ Church is sponsoring the 5K Family Fun Run and the Silvis Moonlight Parade. The day starts with the Silvis Family Races at 8:00am at Schadt Park, where we will be serving food to the runners finishing their race. Are you interested in running or walking the race yourself? Race entry forms can be found online at www.silvisfamilyrun.com. The day’s events continue starting at 1:00pm with craft and food vendors, a car show, live music (including Josie DeWitt and Fishermen’s Holler), and more. UMW East Moline Campus News and Updates UMW East Moline Campus News and Updates What a wonderful program we had for our June Unit Luncheon and Meeting! We were entertained by HerSong, a female choral group, that gave a remarkable program for our ladies and guests. This is one that, if you missed it, you missed something very special.

We took off the month of July but still had a very full month. Now that the ads have come out for school supplies and the stores are gearing up for back to school, don’t forget to fill the Church Women United School kits bags. When you have them filled, please turn them into the mailroom baskets.

On August 28th, at our Unit Meeting and Luncheon, we will be changing things up a little by taking our World Thank Offering instead of in October, as we have done in previous years. So remember to bring your donation. The program will be “Sacred Space of Prayer and Bobbi McCoy will be the presenter.

Don’t forget to make your reservations for the Seasons of Fun Luncheon that will be on August 11th. (See info, this page). And if you haven’t got your ticket or table planned, time is running out!

Velma Gingerich, a longtime member of the Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline Campus and UMW, passed away on June 22nd. The Sympathy Committee was honored to serve the luncheon. Velma could always be found in the kitchen for many events and on Sunday mornings preparing the beautiful fruit trays.

Many have walked by the UMW

on the disaster it

was.

Well, we will be glad to open up the door now and show you what one week of hard work by Janet Lindstrom, Diana Sutton, Bobbi McCoy, Pat Reuter and Karen Moore have done to make the room more productive. So a Big Thank You to these Girls!

to turn or the amount of space needed. Simple parking of a car can be challenging. When

walking, uneven surfaces and curbs/steps can be dangerous if our depth perception and side vision is altered.

Your eye movement. This evaluates the movement of your eyes and notes the ability to move quickly in all directions and slowly track objects.

Your prescription for corrective lenses. A device called a phoroptor will help determine the best eyeglass or contact lens prescription for you.

Your eye pressure. Elevated pressure is a sign of glaucoma. The front part of your eye. A type of microscope

called a slit lamp is used. This illuminates the front part of the eye, including the eyelids, cornea, iris and lens. This test checks for cataracts. It also checks whether there are scars or scratches on the cornea.

Your retina and optic nerve. With the eye dilated, the doctor can examine the retina and optic nerve, which is at the back of the eye, for signs of damage from disease.

Each part of the comprehensive eye exam provides important information about the health of our eyes. This exam is important for our overall health as well as keeping us safe when we drive, read, walk, do computer work and our everyday living. If you feel you have a vision problem, or you are overdue for an eye exam, please schedule an appointment to have your eyes checked. Your eyesight is important. An eye exam is a great way to maintain good eyesight for life, stay healthy, and be safe.

Our vision Everyone depends on their vision to get around. As construction starts on the New Life Center, having the best vision or eyesight will be important for all of us with both driving and walking. There will be many changes over the next year with fences and other obstacles, parking, changing signs, uneven pavement and changes in how we enter and exit our church facility. Safety and paying close attention to new challenges each time we arrive to our present building will be important for each of us. Good vision will be important!

Getting regular professional eye care is part of maintaining healthy vision, at any age. A complete eye exam includes dilating the eyes. This allows the eye doctor to get a closer look at the inside of each eye. (This is not the same as the vision test done at the Driver’s License facility.)

When do you need a complete eye exam? Age 20-39-every 2-4 years if you are African American (to check for glaucoma) and every 3-5 years if Caucasian. Age 40-64-Every 2-4 years. The Academy of Ophthalmology recommends seeing an eye doctor for a baseline eye exam at age 40 if an eye exam has never been done. Age 40 seems to be the time when early signs of disease or changes in vision may occur. Age 65 and older-every 1-2 years to check for age-related eye diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Persons with special risks such as diabetes, previous eye trauma, high blood pressure, family history of glaucoma may need an eye exam more frequently. Any new symptoms of eye trouble should warrant the need to see an eye doctor right away.

An Ophthalmologist should see children when:

Referred by their pediatrician/school nurse

After he/she fails a vision screening

Vision complaint or risk of developing vision problems

Learning disability or developmental delay

What an eye exam should include: Your medical history, including all medications you

are taking. (Including all over the counter, prescriptions, and herbs) Your visual acuity. This is the reading of a standardized eye chart to see how you see at various distances. Your pupils. This evaluates how your pupils respond

to light. Your side vision. Loss of side vision is a symptom of

glaucoma. Side vision or peripheral vision can be lost without knowing it. There may also be a test done to check depth perception, the ability to

perceive the relative distance of objects in our vision field. Depth perception can occur with

blurred vision in one eye and can affect our ability to read and drive. When our depth perception is “off”, we can have difficulty driving, judging when

Giving to The Family Life Center Could Alternative Giving work for you?

A number of our church members have expressed interest in donating stocks to the church to help in the building fund campaign. This would be an example of what we call Alternative Giving. As you may know, the donation of stocks (or other non-cash properties which have increased in value), could provide you with a significant tax benefit. The church has arranged with a brokerage house to facilitate these stock donations. If you are over 70 1/2 years old and subject to Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) for a Traditional IRA (NOT a Roth IRA), you may wish to consider donating those distributions directly to our church. This action could also result in a significant tax benefit for you.

These are just two examples that we wanted to present for your consideration. Of course, everyone’s situation is different. For that reason a subcommittee has been created consisting of Brian Lovett, Dean Sutton, and Larry Ellison to provide assistance in your decision making process. Please prayerfully consider Alternative Giving if it might apply to your personal situation. Since the official campaign ends on September 30th, we would ask that you please contact us as soon as possible for assistance. Our contact information is:

Brian Lovett: 309-762-0458 [email protected]

Dean Sutton: 309-755-5213 [email protected]

This Summer at Silvis Campus

FAMILY LIFE CENTER NEWS

When contributions received after June 1st for the Family Life Center reach a level of

$500,000, the Endowment Fund will match that amount with a grant of an additional $500,000. Needless to say, all required legal documents (including a construction contract and a construction loan) will be

executed before these funds are disbursed. We believe that God has laid down this

challenge to each of us, the people of this congregation. We believe He is waiting for an

answer. Let’s give it to Him!

The stage is set and is yours for the taking Saturday, August 4th ~ 6:00pm

East Moline Campus, Fellowship Hall (and the 1st Saturday of each month) at CUMC's

Open Mic Night! Come sing your favorite songs, tell your favorite jokes, read your favorite poem, or kick back and

take it all in! The fun begins at 6:00pm and goes 'til 8:00pm. For more information, call or text Josie

at (309)235-3923. No karaoke please.

This summer, the Silvis Campus has once again been blessed to serve the children at the Silvis Parks Program. On Thursday, June 14th, our summer ministry began at Schadt Park. Each week, several meals were served both at the church and at the McGehee Center (when the weather was troublesome). On July 12th, we served our super spectacular ice cream sundaes! Over 35 kids and counselors were served at our first “lunch bunch” day. Many thanks to Melinda Reamy for planning, purchasing the food, and preparing the meal for the lunch. Allen Reamy, Janet Oltman, and Jim Oltman were on the team hosting, serving, and making sure that everything was cleaned up and put away. The kids had a great time! It was a great way to have some one-on-one conversations with the kids as they decided which toppings they wanted on their ice cream.

The Silvis Parks Program director, Damon Bautista, has also agreed to let us come and have a special concert/program day with the help of Harvest Ministry on July 17th. It was a great evangelistic opportunity and we were able to invite the kids to come to our Vacation Bible School that evening!

July 16th through July 19th, the Harvest Ministry Team, from Troy, Illinois, was at the Silvis Campus for KIDS WEEK. Kid’s Praise Band, Wild and Wacky Games, Interactive Bible stories, and fun crafts to make-and-take was had by all. Before meals were served each evening, the kids had fun with a word search game, 10 Commandments activity pages, and a coloring page.

God is opening doors of opportunity this summer. Let’s boldly walk through them.

Merry Sunshine News

SUMMER GARDEN MINISTRYSUMMER GARDEN MINISTRY

Some harvesting has been taking place in the garden: radishes, turnips, broccoli, several varieties of lettuce, cucumbers, zucchini, and squash have been donated to both food pantries (East Moline Campus and Silvis Campus). Many thanks to Norm Neely for donating his home grown sweet corn. All of our guests have greatly enjoyed this bountiful harvest! To date, a total of 650 pounds of fresh produce has been donated to the food pantries at East Moline and Silvis.

Many thanks to Dan Thorngren and Carl and Maureen Dittmar for their passion to serve Christ through their love for plants, the garden ministry is growing! New and returning renters this year (including students and staff from Glenview Middle School) are having the privilege to serve through this ministry and more vegetables are being grown to share. Some of the items being grown by the school include carrots, corn, cotton , radishes, and tomatoes.

It’s not too late to join this awesome ministry. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm and be prepared to be blessed as you bless others through your work. Or just stop by and see the awesomeness of all God’s creation!

For more information, please contact Dan Thorngren at 792-8677.

Every day we are getting closer to the start of our school year! We are very excited to see the students soon. Merry Sunshine’s Open House for families will be Tuesday, August 28th in the evening. Children will have the opportunity to meet each other and see their teachers. Families will also start getting to know one another. The classroom will

be ready for all to visit and to play from 5:45pm-7:00pm that night!

Our T/TH class will begin meeting on Thursday, August 30th. The M/W/F class will begin on Friday, August 31st. It will be interesting to see how the building of the (very exciting) Family Life Center affects our drop-off/pick-up procedures….stay tuned….we will share any changes as school gets closer.

Some staff changes have happened over the summer months. Ms. Teresa will be the teacher for both classes this school year. She will be assisted by Ms. Jenny (John) on M/W/F. Ms. Kellie (Lindley) will be the assistant on T/TH. Ms. Peggy (Schneider) will be helping with Small Groups each Monday. Our staff is growing and we are excited to see what God has planned for Merry Sunshine!

It is never too early to let a staff member know you are interested in your baby/child attending Merry Sunshine when they are old enough. We always want to serve the families of CUMC first, so please make sure to contact Ms. Teresa at [email protected] and we will add your child’s name to our ever growing list.

You’ll get to spend time with good people, great food, awesome speakers, and testimonies that you can feel to your soul. I did it in April, 2016 and it was a life-changing experience. On my weekend, I found the unfailing and unwavering love of our heavenly Father and answers to questions that had eaten away at me since I was 10 years old. I also realized that He is always with us. Whatever you bring back with you from your weekend depends on what you were searching for. Please join us on a life-changing weekend “Walk to Emmaus.” ~ Virginia

Shoes for Orphan Souls: Romania Shoe Donation.

Hallelujah!! God is so good! Thank you to our most generous church who donated shoes for the children in Romania. We

exceeded our goal and received 152 pairs of shoes! The children of the Sunday School prayed over them Sunday, July 22 and stuffed

notes of Jesus’ love into each shoe. We even wrote “Jesus Loves You” in the Roma language! Shoes were collected from churches in

the QC area and shipped on July 28th. Our goal was met and fulfills many little hearts and feet of children thanks to you!

“Truly I tell you, ‘Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” ~ Matthew 25:40
