1. Preheat your oven to 180 centigrade and line a 20cm sponge tin with baking parchment. 2. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. 3. Add and incorporate the eggs one at a time. 4. Peel, core and grate the apples, then fold into the mix. 5. Fold in the flour and cinnamon, then transfer to the tin and bake for around 20 minutes 6. At this stage the sponge should have a firm top but not be quite cooked - now mix the demerara sugar with the cinnamon and sprinkle evenly over the cake before returning to the oven 7. Bake until the cake is cooked through (a skewer inserted will come out clean). Depending on your oven, this may take 10-15 minutes. The topping will be crunchy and the apple in the cake cooked through. 8. Transfer to a wire rack and remove from the tin once cool

Crunchy Apple & Cinnamon Cake

T his apple cake makes for a lovely afternoon tea or morning coffee

treat all by itself, but is also great as a pudding on cold pre-spring evenings, served warm with a generous glug of custard. Feel free to experiment with apple varieties for this - depending on how subtle or pronounced an apple flavour you prefer. I like to use a Cox apple for this, but Bramley’s, Russets, Gala... use your favourite!

For the base 115g butter, at room temperature 115g caster sugar 2 large eggs (preferably free range) 115g self raising flour 2 apples pinch of cinnamon

For the crunchy topping 3 tablespoons demerara sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Beauty Treatments Not just for the young or rich

East Neuk Edition - advertising feature

No VAT increase No price increase since 2009

B eauty Therapy is not just for the very young or the very rich. It’s not a luxury we can live without. It

is essential for our well-being. We must protect our skin in this cold

weather or it can become very dry. At Jennifer’s we have many wonderful

facial treatments to leave your skin feel-ing soft as silk.

Feet are often the most neglected part of the body. Problems with hard skin and badly trimmed nails can quickly es-calate. Regular pedicures will prevent these problems and have you walking on air.

Hands also suffer in this winter weather. With our hand and nail treat-ments we can give you beautiful hands. Show off well cared for hands and nails,

don’t hide them in your pockets! Don’t neglect those aches and pains

and just hope they will get better. Mas-sage can help alleviate all kinds of prob-lems, like trapped nerves, tight muscles, arthritis and oedema etc.

Good health and well-being are our greatest assets – don’t take them for granted. Make a positive commitment to take better care of yourself.

Because at Jennifer’s we know that times are tough, we have not increased our already very competitive prices in line with the VAT increase.

So what are you waiting for, call Jenni-fer’s on 01333-311-600 for an appoint-ment as they say “You know you’re worth it.”

Gadgets DIY Goes Digital with Robots, Lasers & Gadgets

GETTING IT STRAIGHT

PAINT WITH EASE

W hen we were little, we thought that by the time we grew up we’d have robots and lasers. We were right, but the

lasers and robots aren’t where we thought they would be. Instead of frying our enemies we’re using them to hang pictures, vacuum the dining room and mow the lawn. Today, even our tools are becoming high-tech.

Your local DIY emporium probably has more lasers than Darth Vader’s Death Star. There are laser spirit levels, laser range finders, laser tape measures and there are even jigsaws that use lasers to show you where to cut.

If you’d rather not spend more than £20 on a spirit level, why not install one on your phone? The free iHandy Carpenter Level for Apple’s iPhone uses your phone’s built-in gyroscope to tell you whether something’s flat. It isn’t as accurate as a real spirit level, but if you only need a quick guide then you can’t argue with free. Don’t have an iPhone? Spirit Level Pro does the same thing on Google-powered Android phones such as the HTC Desire.

The trouble with multi-tools is that they still expect you to do the work. Wouldn’t it be great if you could get robots to do the DIY for you? We’re not quite there yet, but there are plenty of robots

to help around the house. Robot vacuum cleaners such as iRobot’s Roomba and Samsung’s Navibot have dropped below the £400

mark - although like Daleks, they don’t do stairs - and if you really

don’t like mowing the lawn Husquvarna’s robot lawnmower, the Automower, starts at around

£1,099.

ROBOT HOME HELP

You wouldn’t expect paint companies to make gadgets, but they do: Dulux has the PaintPod, and Hammerite has the MetalMaster. Both promise to make DIY easier. The £69 PaintPod is a closed system that sends just enough paint to the integrated roller, and it automatically cleans itself when you’re finished. It works fairly well and vastly reduces the mess most of us make when we’re repainting the house.

Hammerite’s MetalMaster isn’t so successful. It’s an electrostatic paint gun that costs around £50 and promises to take the drudgery out of painting metal such as furniture, railings and so on. However, a quick scan of review sites such as reviewcentre.com paints a fairly sad picture, with customers complaining that it takes longer than a paintbrush and isn’t particularly well made.

DIY ALL IN ONE If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you crossed a toolbox and a transformer, the Power8 Workshop is the answer: its lurid lime green case transforms into a work bench and includes halogen lighting, a drill, a screwdriver, a circular saw and a jigsaw. There’s also an integrated fast charger to keep the tools’ batteries topped up. At £289.90 it’s on the pricey side, but there’s no doubt it offers convenience, easy transportation and easy storage for your stuff.

Fancy something even smaller? Leatherman’s innovative multi-tools are in toolboxes, glove

boxes and suitcases around the planet, and the range starts at around £30 for the smaller models. If money’s

no object the £99 Charge TTi combines stainless steel blades with

titanium handles, and it feels sharp enough to split atoms. It cuts, clips,

strips, saws, screws, crimps and files, and yet the whole thing is small enough to fit in a trouser pocket.

Gardening Feature Fruit Trees

M any gardeners think they can’t grow fruit in the garden, either because they feel they do not have the

space or because they fear that the fruit will be damaged by cold weather in spring. However, it is possible to grow most tree and soft fruit in containers and pots; these will not only take up very little space, but can also be moved under cover in bad weather, if necessary. Container growing also gives all gardeners the opportunity to grow exotic fruit, such as citrus, which cannot be planted out of doors in this country, as well as those like blueberries, which are very fussy about soil. If grown well, container fruits will yield reasonable quantities of fruit but, perhaps as important, they look very handsome on a patio, and can even be used as mini-orchards or moveable components of gar-den design.

Tree fruits grown specifically for pot use are often grafted on to ‘semi-dwarfing’ root-stocks, although the size of pot and the finite amount of compost in it will restrict root and top growth in any event. Any fruit tree vari-ety grafted onto a dwarfing rootstock needs to be grown in a fertile, well-drained soil, such as John Innes No 3 compost, which contains loam and is suitable for plants growing permanently in pots. Blueberries and cranberries need a very acid soil; these should be planted in a proprietary ‘ericaceous’ compost. Citrus are also best in a dedicated citrus compost.

Plant the tree into a pot which is slightly larger than the one from which it came, if it is containerised, or big enough to comforta-bly contain the roots, if it is bare-rooted. (Bare-rooted trees are planted in the dor-mant season, while containerised plants can be planted at any time.) With the latter, make sure that the roots are not ‘pot-bound’. If they are badly girdled, return the tree to the retailer; otherwise, tease them out care-fully. Put a few flattish stones over the holes

at the bottom, then place the tree in the cen-tre, filling in all round with com-post. The tree should be planted at the same depth as it was in the nurs-ery, about 5 cms (2 ins) below the rim of the pot to allow for watering.

Trees on dwarfing rootstocks will need staking since they don’t make extensive root systems. A bamboo cane and small tree ties are often sufficient; check them from time to time to see they are not biting into the bark.

Put the pot onto pot feet or bricks, so that water can drain out freely. Repot every year in autumn, into a slightly larger pot each time, until you have reached about 37.5 cms (15 inches) for gooseberries, say, and 45 cms (18 ins) for apples. Investing in a pot trolley makes sense if you need to move pots under cover in winter.

A watchful watering and feeding regime is essential if the plant is to thrive and pro-duce fruit, which sets and comes to maturity. The main cause of fruit drop is uneven or insufficient watering. Mulch the surface of the compost in spring, and use a high-potash liquid feed frequently once the fruits have formed. Little water is required in win-ter, because the plants are dormant.

Hardy fruits, such as apples and pears, can remain outside in the winter, but the roots are vulnerable in very cold weather, so the containers should be enclosed in bubble wrap (leaving the top clear for watering), and put in a place sheltered from freezing winds. Conversely, in very hot weather in summer, roots of any plant in a pot can be damaged by heat, so place the containers in the shade during heatwaves.

S pringtime in Marrakech is delightful. Snow still clings to the peaks of the High Atlas but in the sun-filled oasis,

the scent of orange blossom fills the air. A new breath of life sweeps through the an-cient palaces, the gardens and palm groves, bustling bazars, tree-lined boulevards and along the red earth ramparts, up to 30 foot high, glowing in the African sun. Marrakech is exotic, beguiling yet just a short flight away and no jetlag.

Set between ocean, mountains and de-sert, this Berber city and former capital gave its name to Morocco and retains glorious mementos of the past. From the sumptuous Medersa College to the 19th century Bahia Palace or the tombs of the Saadian dynasty, it’s a feast of Islamic architecture, rich in marble, mosaics, fountains, courtyards, stucco work as fine as lace and sculpted archways and columns. Destroyed and pil-laged, the old El Badi Palace has no such treasures but its pink crumbling walls and orange grove are among the most haunting spots in town. Storks build their nests on the towers and little disturbs the peace but the ringing of chisels and hammers on the nearby Lantern Square.

Copper and brass, lamps, mirrors, trays, tea pots, basket and leather ware, pointed slippers, embroidered gowns, Marrakech offers some of the best craft in Morocco, much of it in the cool covered alleyways of the souks. This is the place to bargain and buy, marvel at wood turners and silver-smiths, watch out for donkey carts and lose your way in a dark maze of lanes strung with carpets and skeins of freshly-dyed wool. It’s colourful, overwhelming and laced with the fragrance of mint tea and a thousand spices.

After the souks, the gardens are the per-fect escape, whether you choose the green oases within the walls, the Palmeraie out of town, with 100,000 palms and a few luxuri-ous dwellings, the royal Aguedal Garden or Menara with its olive groves, pavilion and

pool. The Majorelle Garden is small and often crowded but a must-see for any visitor. Created by French artist Majorelle, restored by the famous fashion designer Yves St Laurent, it claims 400 varieties of palms, 1800 of cacti and a lily pond with fabulous reflections. Bright ceramic pots compliment exotic plants and a museum displays local crafts. The garden is elegant, sophisticated, a world away from Marrakech’s most popu-lar evening venue, the Djemaa El Fna Square.

When the sun sets over the iconic Koutoubia mosque, the whole city heads towards the central square to enjoy one of the greatest free shows on earth. Drummers and dancers mingle with fortune tellers, snake charmers, juice sellers, henna artists, acrobats, women peddling unleavened bread and mountain folk offering silver ban-gles and aphrodisiacs. Soon, white-hatted chefs set up their mobile kitchens, crowds gather on the benches and great clouds of smoke rise into the night. You can feast on couscous and snails, lentil soup, lamb ke-babs, meat balls and chickpeas and all sorts of mysterious delicacies sizzling in the pans. Along the avenue, the plush horse-drawn carriages patiently await the return of their hotel clients while in the deserted Koutoubia gardens, the orange trees release their sweetest fragrance to welcome the spring.

Edna and Mr P…. as approved by the management!

Volt Electric Wheelchair

[Murray] Good Morning. C C Mobility. How can I help you. [Mr P] ...Hiya. Me again! I hear you've crocked yersel. Edna wis talking tae Auld Mr Corstorphine an' he says that you're in a wheelchair. [Murray] Aye, only temporary I hope. [Mr P] So, what did ye dae? [Murray] I'm not sure. I woke up one morning and as I tried to get up I had this horrendous pain in my back. It was so bad I just crumpled to the floor. I couldn't stand but after a while I crawled over to a wheel-chair and managed to get into it. [Mr P] Och, deary me. How did ye man-age? [Murray] Well some pals called by and sorted me out with food and drinks. Fortu-nately out the back of the shop I've got a bedroom and toilet, everything on the one level except a kitchen. I got a kettle and could make snack noodles and soups. [Mr P] How lang wir you like that? [Murray] Well, I couldn't stand for about two weeks. I rolled about in an electric wheelchair before I could progress to a 4 wheeled walking frame, then crutches, then two walking sticks, then a single quad stick and now (after over 4 weeks) I can get about with just one walking stick.... and dosed up with anti-inflammatories and pain killers. [Mr P] It's as weel ye had a' the equipment.

[Murray] Absolutely! I couldn't have man-aged other-wise. Even things like grabbers, cushions, lap trays, overchair tables, long shoe horns, etc... Really did make me appreciate how useful such things could be. [Mr P] Glad you're getting better. Maybe now you'll need tae hae a sale of all that used equipment! [Murray] Aye! But maybe not the urinals!

T his is a treatment which will calm the mind and soothe the head and ears.

Indications for treatment * Irritations in the ears and sinuses * Headache, migraine, sinusitis, rhinitis and labyrinthitis. * Tinnitus, noises in the ear * Mild hearing loss * Excessive or compacted ear wax * Anxiety and stress * Blocked ears after a cold

Original Biosun ear candles are used, which are tubes of organic cotton impreg-nated with pure beeswax, honey, sage, St. John's wort and camomile.

The ear candle is gently inserted just in-

side the ear, the end is lit and this creates a light suction action or 'chimney effect' which has a massage-like effect on the eardrum. Wax and impurities may be gently drawn out. Both ears will be treated to maintain body balance. An inclusive face and neck acupressure massage increases the benefi-cial effect.

The session will take about 45 minutes

and costs £28. Call Sheila Caldwell on 01333 311468

Flylady, Marla Cilley 7 Tips For Saving Time

E very day we all waste time searching for something and try-ing to make decisions. The funny

thing is that the reason we are searching for an item is because we put off making a decision in the first place. Would you like to save some time?

Each morning we stumble out of bed in search of coffee or something to get us moving. We turn on the TV and get sucked into a morning program and be-fore we know it; we are rushing around trying to get dressed so we wont be late to work again.

This year our motto is Let's Go for Seven in 2011. Here are your seven time saving tips.

1. Pick out your clothes the night be-fore. This will keep you from standing in your closet scratching your head. This way you have time to put a whole outfit together so you will look like a million dollars.

2. Set your coffee up at night. If you have your coffee on a timer; it can start brewing before your alarm clock goes off. This way the smell of your coffee will get you out of your bed. This will keep you from having to stop for coffee on your way to work. It will save you money too but that is another essay.

3. Shine your sink before you go to bed. This will save you time making breakfast in the morning. Not only will you gain a few minutes but the smile you put on your face will help your day start on the right foot.

4. As soon as your feet hit the floor make up your bed. It only takes a minute to make you feel good about your room. How does this save you time? Well it makes you feel energized.

5. Head straight to the bathroom and get dressed as fast as you can. This is easy to do because you picked out your clothes last night. Do not leave the bathroom until you are dressed to lace up shoes. This will keep you fo-cused.

6. While you are in the bathroom, do a thirty second swish and swipe while you are getting dressed. Put your makeup and hair tools away when you finish us-ing them. This keeps your bathroom company ready.

7. Establish a launch pad and place items you are going to need tomorrow on that spot after you check your calendar. This way everything you need to take with you is all together. All you have to do is grab and go.

After having done these things you are going to feel like you have more time to your morning. Your stress will be de-creased and you might even be a nicer person when you don’ feel like you have to rush.

Saving time by doing a Before Bed Routine and staying focused in the morning is your key to releasing the pressure that has plagued most of your life. I want you FLY! When you are Fi-nally Loving Yourself you will have peaceful mornings.

Books

A Book To Give Mum On Mother’s Day

M other’s Day is almost upon us, and what better way to say ‘thank you’ than with the thoughtful gift of a

book. We’ve put together a few of the best to give Mum on her special day.

Senses Awaken, A Collection of Poems by Gail Newman Local author Gail Newman presents an inspired and beautiful collection of profound awareness and insightful poems from her own experiences and lifes journey. Senses Awaken touches on the fragility of childhood and the deepest spiritual connection she has with the animal world.

Gail was born in England, spend the first few years of her life in Canada with her parents before returning to England at the age of five. Amimals were an important part of her life, rescuing birds and mice from cats and trying to nurse them back to health, at a very young age. She started horse riding at the age of five and later took her teaching exam. Gail had two daughters with her first husband. She met and married her second husband and moved to Scotland in 1991, bringing with them two children, four dogs, a cat, three pet rabbits and two budgies. Gail and her husband share “Menagerie Cottage” with their two foster children and rescued animals. They say “We will never stop rescuing vulnerable animals, who manage to find their way to us somehow”.

The book is available directly from Gail, priced £8.99. Tel 01333 720232. It is also available from Psyche’s Garden, St Andrews, Senses Awaken, Kirkcaldy & East Neuk Books in Anstruther - prices may vary.

Dear Mum, From You to Me concept by Neil Coxon Ever wondered what your mum was like as a child or how your parents met? Here’s something totally different for Mother’s Day

which will answer all those unanswered questions. Not so much reading material than a little project, this lovely hardback book is packed full with leading questions such as: How did you feel when you found out you were pregnant with me? What was the first piece of music you bought? And what one piece of advice would you offer me? Here is a chance to record your mum’s memories and reveal the book within, something which she’ll enjoy creating which will be treasured by all her loved ones.

1001 Little Beauty Miracles by Esme Floyd This beauty bible is jam packed with hints and tips for any lady in need of some TLC. From covering blemishes and making thin hair look thick to dealing with unmentionables such as facial hair, the pages are packed with practical and simple advice. Release your Mum’s inner glamour-puss with this fantastic book - she’ll be sure to thank you for it!

Chicken Soup for the Mother’s Soul by Marci Shimoff, Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, and Jennifer Read Hawthorne From the best selling series comes a collection of heart-warming, true stories recollecting the defining moments of motherhood - from birth and adoption stories to miracle tales and how it feels to watch them fly the nest and become parents of their own. This book guarantees tears and laughter, for anyone who has been a mother.
