On the evening of Easter day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe." Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

From the Rector’s Notebook !We continue today to give thanks to God for the glorious resurrection of our Lord in these Days of Easter. !Easter or the Pasch as it is called celebrates that wonderful experience of joy felt continually by followers of Christ, that Christ has passed safely through the path and passage from death to life eternal. !The biblical basis for this insistence on rejoicing derives from the passage in which our Lord tells his disciples, distressed at his going to the Father, "your sorrow will turn to joy" (Jn 16:20), and added "You are sad now, but I shall see you again, and your hearts will be full of joy" (Jn 16:22). !Our Lord fulfilled this promise on the evening of the day of resurrection when he showed himself to the disciples and displayed his wounds to them. They were then "filled with joy when they saw the Lord" (Jn 20:20). !Professor Patrick Regan is of the view that during the Fifty Days the community of faith is filled with the same joy and for the same reason. !Regan goes on to say that

like the first disciples it (The church) too continually experiences the life-giving presence of the risen Lord through whose wounds the Spirit of holiness is incessantly poured forth to sanctify it, and so make it into the Church, the final gathering into God of a cleansed and consecrated humanity. !

The celebration of the Fifty Day of Easter leads to the Fiftieth Day - the Day of Pentecost when we give thanks to God for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the one holy catholic and apostolic church. !This includes the observance of the Fortieth Day - the Feast of the Ascension, which will be celebrated this year on Thursday May 29th. We are asked to mark that day in our personal calendar since holy mother church invites us all to make our communion on that day of obligation. !Jesus comes to us spiritually and sacramentally under the species of the bread and cup of Holy Communion. In the sacred rite he continues to show us his hands and his side and bids us to recognise him as Lord and God. !We give thanks for this joyful Easter-tide as we give thanks in these days for the joy and hope of new life in Christ. !Yours in Christ, !Noel A. We will leave St. David at 5:30 a.m. Walk towards BET, go towards the Sir Garfield Sobers Roundabout, turn left below the Chapel of St. Basil, walk past the Sargeant’s Village playing field, turn left through South View on to South Ridge and back to St. David. A healthy breakfast awaits you.

HEALTH CORNER THE COCONUT (Cocos nucifera) Early Spaniards, because of the three "eyes" of the coconut, called it coco, which means "monkey face". Many cultures have sworn by the medicinal benefits of the water, milk and meat of this fruit. We here in Barbados, we have our own beliefs and that is why we flock to the coconut vendors every Sunday after church! Well modern medical research has confirmed many of these health benefits. Today, let us take a look at coconut oil. Coconut Oil Coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids which provide an immediate source of energy and enable the body to metabolise fat efficiently. This property is beneficial for persons trying to lose weight, have difficulty digesting fat or have impaired immune systems. In our bodies, medium chain fatty acids are treated very differently from long chain fatty acids. The medium chain fatty acids do not have a negative effect on cholesterol and help to protect against heart disease. They help to lower the risk of both atherosclerosis and heart disease. It is primarily due to these medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil that makes it so unique and so beneficial. Both the saturated and unsaturated fat found in most vegetable oils, meat, milk and eggs are composed of long chain fatty acids. Coconut oil does not form harmful by-products when heated to normal cooking temperature like other vegetable oils do. !Here are a few researched areas which showed benefits from coconut oil:
