Each Deanery has a designated church whose doors will be "Holy Doors". Pope Boniface VIII declared the first Holy Year in 1300 since when the Catholic Church has regularly celebrated the Holy Years. The main aspect of the Holy Year has been to make a pilgrimage to Rome inorder to make reparation for sin and to renew our lives. The important symbolic act perfomed by each pilgrim has been to pass through the Holy Door. Jesus said: "Truly I am the door, if anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly." John 10:10. To pass through the door from the outside of St Peter's into the Basilica is to pass from this world into the presence of God. Traditionally the Holy Father strikes the door three times reminding us that Moses struck the rock so that water poured out to quench the thirst of the people. God has struck our hearts opening them to his graces. When the door opens, the obstacles of passage to our Lord are removed. During the Holy Year, we hope and pray that the obstacles of personal weakness, temptation, and sin will be removed so that we may be united with our Lord. During the year of mercy Pope Francis invites us to contemplate the notion of a Holy Door, "a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God which consoles, pardons and instils hope." (Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubillee of Mercy). The Pope has asked that doors of mercy should be opened in all dioceses so that as many as possible may be able to make the pilgrimage, be converted and find the strenght to embrace God's mercy and dedicate themselves to being merciful with others as the Father has been with us. In our Diocese the following churches have Holy Doors of Mercy: The Cathedral church of the Holy Rosary in Dundee, the church of Our Lady of Sorrows at Maria Ratschitz, the church of St Peter and Paul in Newcastle, the church of St Francis of Assisi in Standerton, UMalusi oMuhle, Steadville and St Francis in Wesselton Ermelo. Those who make a pilgrimage to, pass through, a Holy Door during the Year of Mercy are granted a plenary indulgence, which gives full remission of the temporal punishment due to sin. "Every sin has consequences. It disrupts our communion with God and the Church, weakens our ability to resist temptation, and hurts others. The necessity of healing these consequences, once the sin itself has been forgiven, is called temporal punishment. "Hence, to live the indulgence of the Holy Year means to approach the Father's mercy with the certainty that his forgiveness extends to the entire life of the believer ... Let us live this Jubilee intensely, begging the Father to forgive our sin and to bathe us in merciful 'indulgence.'" (Pope Francis, Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubille of Mercy). To receive a Plenary Indulgence Like previous jubilees, the Jubilee Year of Mercy (December 8 2015 November 20, 2016) features a plenary ndulgence, or an indulgence which remits all temporal punishment due to sin. To obtain the plenary indulgence, one must make a pilgrimage to and pass through the Holy Door of mercy, once one has crossed through the Holy Door or Door of Mercy, in addition to the usual conditions (celebrate the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation and receive Holy Communion) the faithful should stop in prayer to fulfill the final actions asked for, the profession of faith and prayer for the Holy Father and his intentions. 13th December 2015 after a gathering and service of prayer, reading

of Scripture, and blessing, Bishop Graham, on behalf of the Dundee Diocese

and united with the Universal Church, opened the doors of the Holy Rosary

Cathedral declaring them to be the Holy Doors of Mercy. Each Deanery has a

designated church whose doors will be "Holy Doors".

Pope Boniface VIII declared the first Holy Year in 1300 since when the Catholic Church has regularly celebrated the Holy

renew our lives. The important symbolic act perfomed by each pilgrim has been to pass through the Holy Door. Jesus said:

"Truly I am the door, if anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. I came that they may

to pass from this world into the presence of God. Traditionally the Holy Father strikes the door three times reminding us

that Moses struck the rock so that water poured out to quench the thirst of the people. God has struck our hearts opening

them to his graces. When the door opens, the obstacles of passage to our Lord are removed. During the Holy Year, we

hope and pray that the obstacles of personal weakness, temptation, and sin will be removed so that we may be united with

our Lord. During the year of mercy Pope Francis invites us to contemplate the notion of a Holy Door, "a Door of Mercy

church of Our Lady of Sorrows at Maria Ratschitz, the church of St Peter and Paul in Newcastle, the church of St Francis

of Assisi in Standerton, UMalusi oMuhle, Steadville and St Francis in Wesselton Ermelo.

Those who make a pilgrimage to, pass through, a Holy Door during the Year of Mercy are granted a plenary indulgence,

which gives full remission of the temporal punishment due to sin. "Every sin has consequences. It disrupts our communion

(Pope Francis, Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubille of Mercy).

To receive a Plenary Indulgence

Like previous jubilees, the Jubilee Year of Mercy (December 8 2015 November 20, 2016) features a plenary ndulgence,

or an indulgence which remits all temporal punishment due to sin. To obtain the plenary indulgence, one must make a

pilgrimage to and pass through the Holy Door of mercy, once one has crossed through the Holy Door or Door of Mercy, in

addition to the usual conditions (celebrate the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation and receive Holy Communion)

Franciscans atMARIARATSCHITZAn addendum to the article on Maria

Ratschitz by Sister Kenelma.

While our now fully fledged Diocese

of Dundee was under Durban as the

Prefecture of Volksrust it was

entrusted for its development to the

custodianship of the Franciscans of

the English Province. One of the

areas that the Franciscans took over

as a mission was Maria Ratschitz.

Maria Ratschitz had, for a time before

this, been served by the OMI priests.

In this mission of Maria Ratschitz the

Franciscans served the people as

best they could and worked hard in

their vocation of evengelising. They

were involved in running the school,

orgainising farming, and introducing

cattle and pigs.

Some of the Franciscans, to mention

just four (do you the reader know of

any others?) were Fr. Michael

Paschal, later to become the first

Bishop of the Diocese of Dundee, Fr.

Cosmos, Fr. Eunan, and Brother

Eugene. Fr. Eunan was responsible

for the formation of the school which

catered for borders as far away as

Soweto. The demise of the school

enterprise came when the students

burned the place down! For some of

the time while Fr. Eunan had

responsibility of Maria Ratscitz he

was actually stationed at Madadeni,

and he relied on Brother Eugene who

was resident at the mission.

During the apartheid era when

communities were being resettled,

and most in the form of “forced

removal”, the Franciscans strongly

opposed the removal of the people

from Thelapi to Lime Hill. Because of

this removal the population in the

area diminished, but as a result of the

Franciscan opposition a large number

of people were permitted to remain.

This situation also affected the size of

the church congregation.

The Trappist monks had built the

church, and other buildings that

housed a school for girls, a refectory,

a convent, accommodation for the

monks, and workshops. They had

built them strongly, and beautifully.

However from the time that the

Trappists vacated Maria Ratschitz,

and it was cared for from Mariannhill,

it was difficult to maintain the

property and the many missionary

activities within the large community.

Over the years the buildings

gradually fell into disrepair, and some

were verging on ruins.

There came a rescue plan in the

early 90’s as an anonymous donor in

Germany gave money for the

restoration of the church, “Our Lady

of Sorrows”, and some other

buildings. Mr. Brucher, together with

a group of artists from Germany,

restored the beautiful paintings in the

church. The full restoration was

completed by the Jubilee year 2000

(see the commemorative plaque in

the church). An idea was floated to

create a centre for skill training, but

this was not successful due to the

remote location of the mission.

Before Bishop Michael Paschal would

release the donated money he had

received for the restoration, he

wanted to be sure that a community

of men or sisters would come and be

resident at the mission and help in

developing it. Many Religious Orders

were approached! The Franciscan

Nardini Sisters took up the challenge

(see history of the Nardini sisters)

and took up residence in 1998. The

first sisters being Sisters Irmingard,

Regilind, and Immaculate. From the

beginning the Sisters have been

exemplary in the way the mission has

been built up, opened to the public,

and well maintained. The Sisters

have a community at Maria Ratschitz

and they have also built their

Novitiate which at present is blessed

with many postulants and novices.

The Franciscan Nardini Sisters run a

Hospice, and they have outreach

programs to the poor and needy of

the parish and local community under

the Project of DUDUZA. They

welcome visitors/pilgrims, and host

the annual Diocesan Pilgrimage.

Fr. Tom Tshabalala OFM is the

present priestincharge of the

mission. Between Fr. Eunan OFM

(from the OMI priests) and Fr. Tom

OFM the mission was served by a

Passionist priest, Fr. Tomasz,

followed by a Consolata, Fr. Rocco,

and then Bishop Emeritus Gerard

Ndlovo. Due to the pioneering work of

the Franciscans in the Diocese, the

second patron of the Dundee Diocese

is St. Francis, the first being Our Lady

of the Rosary.

There is a time to be born,

a time to die, and a time for

rebirth. Pax Christi

Pastoral Centre has served

the Diocese since 1993,

welcoming thousands of

people for a great variety

of reasons – individuals for

a rest, groups for courses,

retreats, gatherings,

Conferences, and so on.

We THANK GOD for all

those who have served to

run the Centre, particularly

the Newcastle Dominican

Sisters, and in recent years

the Franciscan

Missionaries of Mary,

together with the dedicated

and loyal staff. We THANK

GOD for all the graces that

have been given to all who

have come, for whatever

reason, to share the

facilities that the Centre

offered. We THANK GOD

for the initiative of Bishop

Michael our former Bishop,

who architecturally planned

and saw to its building.

With a vision of a new PAX

CHRISTI to be built at

“Rowland Park” (Hilldrop)

the present site has been

sold to St. Dominic’s

Academy.Please keep in

your prayers the envisaged

Diocesan developments at

“Rowland Park” which

includes the establishment

of the Tyburn Monastery

(see the last issue of the

Indaba), the Chancery, the

residence of the Bishop,

and Fr. Peter Cullen our

Vicar General and

Administrator (both have

now taken up residence

there), the convent for the

FMM sisters, and also a

number of other proposals,

including possibly a

Church. Temporally the

FMM sisters are living in

the Priests’ House of SS

Peter and Paul parish, until

Fr. Tomasz (presently at

Ermelo) arrives, we hope in

May. Fr. Tomasz will then

be priest in charge of the

parish. If events work out

as proposed the Sisters will

then move into the house

at Hilldrop. The repository

that was run at Pax Christi

will soon be opening from

St Peter and Paul Church.

On Thursday 28th January

there was a formal closing

of the present Pax Christi

when tribute was paid to

the Dominican sisters

Jordana, Rosaria, Flora,

Jemma and Finnbar who

helped run the centre as

well as the Franciscan

Missionaries of Mary, Lucy,

Ena, Mary, Lungile, Kathy

and Christine who took

over their work. A

presentation was made to

Theresa and Dinisa as well

as Jabu and Sonto for their

years of dedicated work

keeping the centre

spotless and the visitors

well fed.

Journeys On

Lord Jesus Christ,

you have taught us to be merciful like

the heavenly Father, and have told us

that whoever sees you sees Him.

Show us your face and we will be

saved.

Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus

and Matthew from being enslaved by

money; the adulteress and

Magdalene from seeking happiness

only in created things; made Peter

weep after his betrayal,

and assured Paradise to the

repentant thief.

Let us hear, as if addressed to each

one of us, the words that you spoke

to the Samaritan woman:

“If you knew the gift of God!”

You are the visible face of the

invisible Father, of the God who

manifests his power above all by

forgiveness and mercy:

let the Church be your visible face in

the world, its Lord risen and glorified.

You willed that your ministers would

also be clothed in weakness

in order that they may feel

compassion for those in ignorance

and error:

let everyone who approaches them

feel sought after, loved, and forgiven

by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate

every one of us with its anointing,

so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a

year of grace from the Lord, and your

Church, with renewed enthusiasm,

may bring good news to the poor,

proclaim liberty to captives and the

oppressed, and restore sight to the

blind.

We ask this of you, Lord Jesus,

through the intercession of Mary,

Mother of Mercy; you who live and

reign with the Father and the Holy

Spirit for ever and ever.

Amen.

St. Antonine’s is situated in the rural

area of Amakhasi, with a great variety

of residents, among whom there are

many that are very poor and needy.

Great love and care and the highest

respect is given to these people.

A proud LOTTO achievement to

benefit all!

The “Certificate of Achievement” was

presented to Sister Lucia on 26th

November 2015. To merit this

Certificate from the Lottery

Commission you need to survive a

deep scrutiny into the running and

management of the Home, the

fulfillment of your stated goals, and

even a separate audit. St. Antonine’s

Home passed with flying colors.

Since Sr. Lucia took responsibility for

the running and development of the

Home she has, by enlisting and

encouraging the help and cooperation

of many people individuals, groups,

Societies, Companies, expanded the

Home and has developed St.

Antonine’s into a place (a Home) of

excellence, making it a place that is a

real home for the residents, and

providing a stimulating atmosphere.

The most recent addition is a “farm”,

with some cattle, sheep, pigs,

chickens. The presence of and

contact with animals is very calming

and therapeutic, and a new

dimension for many of the male

residents in particular, who come

from a rural area and miss this

contact.

Sister Lucia is quick to point out the

Team effort of this achievement.

CONGRATULATIONS, Sr. Lucia to

you and to all who have played their

part in making this Award possible.

Be correctly proud, and may God

bless you and help you all to continue

and further the great work. This

Certificate from the Lottery Fund also

reflects on how very well other

funding (which is still essential to

continue to maintain this Home) is

scrupulously managed. THANK YOU

TO ALL THE FRIENDS AND

DONORS OF ST. ANTONINE’S.

Please continue your support for this

outreach to provide a family of care

for those elderly and less able who

need it, and showing God’s merciful

love to them.

St. Antonine’s Home for the Aged (Amakhasi KZN)

The attraction of being loved, fed, and clothed…then much more follows! Ending 2015 and

launching into 2016 with a party gathering for the over 50 children and families that receive care from the ten fantastic

volunteer women of the Mduduzi Project, and the Ithemba NeNjalo Project youth (Bishop Graham’s Challenge Project from

the 2015 Diocesan Youth Day) – with the use of the hardworking MCARE project Bantam. We pray for all the Projects

throughout the Diocese who give love and help and hope to so many orphans, childheaded families, and poor struggling

families, and the elderly, and the sick. May this Holy Year of Mercy increase our love, and our pursuit of justice, peace, and

an end to corruption.

Meeting

The Catechetical Workshop took

place in Secunda Parish on Saturday

the 13th of February. Sr Thuli, who is

a Newcastle Dominican Sister and

the Catechetical Coordinator for the

Dundee Diocese, facilitated the

Workshop. Eight catechism teachers

attended and were eagerly ready and

waiting by 9am.

The Workshop opened with a prayer

reflecting on the Gospel passage

about Jesus sending “the Twelve”

(disciples), on a mission. He sent

them in pairs so that each individual

would have support. Jesus gave them

some practical instructions,

commissioned them with His authority

to preach and teach, and gave them

power to carry out their work which in

the case of these Disciples was also

to heal those who were sick, and cast

out “Demons” (Mk 6:713).

We began our first session by

attempting to respond to the

question,” What is Catechesis?”

There was sharing attempting to

answer this queston. Sr. Thuli then

said, in summary, that Catechesis

involves prayer formation, faith

formation, moral formation, and

liturgical formation. Also as far as

possible good grounding in the

Teaching of the Church, and the

knowledge of the Scriptures. She also

explained the Document issued by

the Southern African Catholic

Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) that

concerns the Teachings of the

Church, and poses some searching

questions such as, why are many

people leaving our Church and going

to join other churches? Are the

catechists really doing their work

properly? Are our Catholic people

receiving the Teaching and also

putting into practise whatever is

taught, so that it becomes their life?

Sr. Thuli concluded her session by

showing to us some books that can

be used as a basis for conducting

catechism classes for different

grades, ages, or different stages of

development and receiving of the

sacraments.

Everyone present shared some of the

challenges that we face in our

communities, and encouraged each

other that by God’s grace we will

keep persevering in our mission as

catechists.

The workshop as a whole was

inspiring because it was like a

refresher course, and gave us all a

renewed spirit to carry on and to trust

in the Godgiven commissioning, and

the power guaranteed to us for the

job. It was a lovely and worthwhile

day indeed. On the following day, the

First Sunday of Lent, the 9am Mass

i

n Holy Family Church was celebrated

by Fr. Emmanuel, a Spiritan priest

supplying for Fr. Marcel, our Parish

Priest. Fr. Emmanuel commissioned

eleven as Catechism Teachers from

our three communities of Christ the

King, Evander, Holy Family Secunda,

and Holy Trinity Kinross. In the

Commissioning we resolved to follow

the Teachings of the Church, and to

teach others about our faith, the

Scriptures, and what we believe.

Since we have been enlightened by

God’s Word and the Teaching of the

Church, we as catechists are charged

to impart to others an initiation or a

deeper formation in those realities

that we have learned as Truths. Our

first teaching is the witness of our

own lives as we try to follow what we

believe and teach in truly living it, and

celebrating it in the liturgy. JIMMY

During the Year of Mercy Pope

Francis hopes that the mercy of

God will be experienced by

everyone. Every person yearns

to, and needs to experience love,

tenderness, compassion and

forgiveness. May this year be a

source of healing and blessing

for you and your family.

God’s mercy “...is not an abstract

idea, but a concrete reality with

which he reveals his love as that

of a father or a mother, moved to

the very depths out of love for

their child ...It gushes forth from

the depths naturally, full of

tenderness and compassion,

indulgence and mercy.” Pope

Francis, Bull of Indiction 6

“Jesus, You have given me to

know and understand in what a

soul’s greatness consists: not in

great deeds but in great love.” St
