While this Easter was almost as quiet as last Easter with many public and private gatherings can- celled with the pandemic now in its 13th month, Hilton Township Recreation managed to put togeth- er a nice and safe way for kids to celebrate Easter. Even if you’re not a kid and just happened to be driving down Baseline Road on Saturday you had a chance to spot the Easter Bunny in person! It was not some- thing many expected to see. Approximately 40 children visit- ed outside of the township building which was very nicely decorated with various deco- rations including inflatables. While an indoor party obvi- ously would have been more ideal, with that off the table, they made the best of the sit- uation with the outdoor chute (similar to what was used for trick or treaters) giving out goodies to the children. Fortu- nately, the weather cooperated as well, although either way we think the Easter Bunny would have been warm enough. many stopped by. Valerie Obarymskyj at the Hilton Township office tell us “it was a wonderful day and despite some reservations at going ahead with it given the recent Covid 19 restrictions, I knew our nurse Penny Wood would make sure everyone’s safety was protected”. It was a real group effort staging the event, with so many others forced to cancel their plans including Kris and Amy Desjardin’s Easter egg hunt, but they donated gift baskets as well as inflatable decora- tions. Penny Wood, Dale Kingsley & Donna Smith (Easter Bunny) were thrilled to fill the Easter bas- kets.
The hand sanitizing station was donated by Is- land Timbr Mart and the Hilton volunteers ran the
chute. The large canopy was loaned to the township from Beth and Denzil Fleming. Not only were the kids who we saw when we briefly stopped by hav- ing a great time, we also got a couple of messages about the event from others. Kirsten Young sent us a couple of photos of her grandson Kit (pictured above) who may have been the first child to arrive. She, too, called the event “wonderful”.
With the structured entry to receive your candy, as well as enter your information for the draws it made for an easy way to allow people to go in one family at a time with ample space in the parking lot for others to wait their turn. Plus, you could just go say hi to the Easter Bunny while you waited. The winners of the baskets were: Parker McMaster (pictured left) and Griffin Hoover. Parker’s parents were kind enough to send this photo of her with her basket.
It will probably be a while until we see a true nor- mal, especially with children’s events but the volun- teers at Hilton Township really stepped up for the benefit of young children and their families. We’re sure many are looking forward to seeing what they come up with next.
