BENEDICT VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT
The Benedict Volunteer Fire Department
met March 13 with twelve members present.
The recent calls were reviewed, including the
difficulty in fighting a fire with sub zero
temperatures to deal with. On a recent call, several
trucks from neighboring departments (Mutual Aid)
were froze up upon arriving at the scene.
From the Community’s generous donations, a new
computer and printer were purchased, replacing the old
equipment. Upcoming training opportunities that
NSVFA (Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighters
Association) provides were discussed. School will be
held May 17-19 this year and will consist of 29 classes
in all phases of firemanship, fire investigation, rescue,
fire safety, leadership, officer training, fire prevention,
and EMS. The school is once again being held at
Fonner Park and sites in and around Grand Island.
With the recent wet weather, a number of requests for
permits to burn have been received. This is an
excellent time to get this done! Remember to use your
common sense and be safe!
The next training and business meeting will be held
Wednesday, April 10 at 7:00 pm.

Cob Pile Ablaze Several of the local fire boys responded to a call for
help from the Karl Howard farm Sunday afternoon
when a pile of cobs ignited from a spark. The chemical
equipment was loaded onto the Sidwell truck and made
the run in nothing flat.
A few buckets of water soon brought the blaze under
control. Mr. Howard was in town Monday with a load
of cobs which he guaranteed to burn since he had seen
a demonstration of their combustibility the day before
and knew whereof he spoke.
