In the hands of God our spirits find refreshment and renewal for what lies ahead. God knows best what we need and how best to ready us for what is coming. Wed 17 Nov Liturgy of the day Acts 8: 7-8; Psalm 66; John 6:35-40 Jesus was fully present to all, and fully alive in the human experience. He embraces each individual he encounters as unique. The Word of God is alive in our world today. Let us be witnesses to his presence. Thu 18 Apr Liturgy of the day Acts 8:26-40; Psalm 66; John 6:44-57 What prevents you from really opening yourself to the grace of your baptism, and growing in your faith? Ask God to break down the obstacles of pride, fear, control, busy-ness. Allow the Spirit to move you. Fri 19 Apr Liturgy of the day Acts 9:7-20; Psalm 777; John 6:52-59 It was only in darkness that Paul began to see, undergoing a death-resurrection experience. Be aware of God's continual call to a deeper and more profound spiritual conversion and growth. Sat 20 Apr (St Marcellinus, Bishop) Acts 9:37 -42; Psalm 776; John 6:60-69 Do miracles happen today? Whenever a person learns to control an addiction, comes out of a depression or turns his or her life around, the miracle of coming back from death to life occurs. Give thanks to God. Sun 21 Apr 4TH SUNDAY OF EASTER Acts 73:74.43-52; Psalm 7 00; John 70:27-30 A life spent in service to the poor and vulnerable, a life of prayer, a life connected to God will result in spiritual wealth beyond anything money can buy. Were they so confused by all that had happened that they thought they had better try and "get back to normal"?Werethey unsure of the first two appearances of Jesus after his death? Was it all real? Or were they just plain hungry? Whatever the reason, it was a fruitless night: they went out and got into the boat but caught nothing that night. But there was a providential plan behind their lack of success. The Risen Lord was going to give them an unforgettable lesson about growth in faith. At first light Jesus appeared on the shore calling to them and asking about their catch; when the seven fishermen did make a massive haul (153 big fish) recognition dawned. The disciple Jesus loved was the first to recognise him: It is the Lord. Love leads to recognition; love and faith are intrinsically linked in the Christian experience. The impetuous Peter leapt into the water to come to Jesus immediately: faith and love lead to action. Some of the large number of fish provided breakfast, prepared by Jesus himself. But they also symbolized the growth in faith: these same disciples had been told they would be 'fishers of men'. Faith grows in our hearts but also in our communities; indeed in the Second Reading today we get a hintofthe spread offaith when the Easter Faith prophet looks forward to hearing every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea all praising the Lamb of God. The Risen Jesus had something else in mind that morning. He took Simon Peter on another stage of his journey of faith - and love. The dialogue between Jesus and Peter is echoed in the hearts of all who have ever let Jesus down. It is not a dialogue of reproach for infidelity, but a dialogue of love and responsibility. It would be spiritual arrogance to imagine that our faith is any stronger than that of Simon Peter - or of the other six in the boat! We all share a history of infidelity, one way or other. Yet, equally, when we encounter the Risen Jesus there is no reproach: we share a history of repentance and we echo Peter's confession Yes, Lord, you know I love you. Our faith grows through such an encounter andwe can move forward with new and more serious responsibilities for the faith of the Church. We can hardly turn away from today's Gospel without a question or two. Do I keep my faith to myself as a sort of private, secret, garden- enclosed? Do I feed Christ's little ones (his lambs)? Do I invite colleagues, relations and friends (his sheep) to breakfast with the Lord? Such questions are a way of dealing with the strong invitation of Jesus at the end of today's Gospel: Follow me. 3rd Sunday' of Easter. Year C • Divine Office: Week III • 14 A ril2013

Just a thought

PREFACE What is the difference between a Preface and a Foreword to a book? The Foreword is written by someone other than the author. So, an author often tries to get a distinguished person to write the Foreword. To publish a book with a Foreword by Pope Francis would be quite a coup! A Preface on the other hand is written by the author of the work. In the Preface the author explains the purpose, prospective readership and scope of the book; it is a sort of introduction so that the reader has some idea of what to expect. All our Eucharistic Prayers come with a Preface and in the Easter season there are five special Easter Prefaces. Each of these Prefaces highlights a certain aspect of the mystery of Christ’s Resurrection. Easter Preface I praises Christ as the true Passover Lamb whose death has destroyed death. Easter Preface II proclaims that Christ is the new life in whose death we have become children of light. Easter Preface III acknowledges Christ as the great priest who makes in-tercession for us before the face of God. Easter Preface IV portrays Christ as the founder of a new age in whom the world is renewed and humanity restored, a cosmic vision. Easter Preface V declares Christ the priest, the altar and the lamb of sac-rifice. The Prefaces of Easter are a mini commentary on the Feast of Feasts and they repay pondering over and praying in the light of the Resurrection. Fr Sean Wales, C.Ss.R.
