EASTER HOLIDAY

1. General- On Easter Sunday, Christians celebratethe resurrectionof the Lord.- The most well-attended Sunday service of the year for Christian churches.- The belief: Jesus came back to life, three days after his death on the cross.- The death of Jesus Christ bycrucifixionis commemorated onGood Friday.

Through those, Jesus paid the penalty for sin purchase for all who believe in

him.

4. Determining the Date of Easter- Always celebrated on the Sunday immediately following thePaschal Full Moon.

5. Why does the Date for Easter Change every Year?a. Short answer:

- The early church fathers wished to keep the observance of Easter in correlation totheJewish Passover.

- Jewish holiday calendar: based on solar and lunar cycles feast days (the death,burial, resurrection) movableEaster changes every year.

b. Long answer- Paschal Full MoonDate is determined from historical tables, has nop

correspondence to lunar events.- Western Christian Church used the calculations that astronomers approximated toestablish table of Ecclesiastical Full Moon datesHoly Days on the Ecclesiastical

calendar.

- By 1583, the table was established and used ever since. Paschal Full Moon: first Ecclesiastical Full Moon date after March 20 (March

21 to April 18)

- On that day: there is big parade in London Center, called The Trooping of theColour (originally a military procedure taken place before battle)

The official birthday of Queen Elizabeth IImarked each year by a military parade and

march-past (Carrying of the Flag).

- The biggest royal event of the year.

Members of the Royal Family stand with Britain's Queen Elizabeth II (C) on the balcony of

Buckingham Palace following the Queen's Birthday Parade, "Trooping the Colour", at the Horse

Guards Parade, in London, on June 11, 2011. The ceremony, made up of more than 600

guardsmen and cavalry, is believed to have first been performed during the reign of King Charles

II and in 1748 it was decided that the parade would be used to mark the official birthday of the

Sovereign, even though the Queen's actual birthday is on April 21st

- In 1748, the sovereigns official birthday was amalgamated (merged) with theTrooping the Colour.

- Tradition of Trooping the Colour : back to days when the Colours (regimental flagof the regiment) was trooped in front of soldiers to make sure everyone could

recognise the flag in battle.

2. The History- Existed in various forms from around 1700, then restored in 1820 on the accession

of King George IV.- Parades main aspects have changed very little since then.- Apart from during the world wars and a national rail strike in 1955.- Monarchs are traditionally given a second birthday if they were born in winter, in

case the weather is unsuitable for an outdoor event!

4. Ticket for the Holiday- Available to the public, however they must be applied for in writing in January or

February and are then allocated by ballot.

- Applicants will be informed by mid-March if they have been successful.- If you're not lucky enough to get a ticket for Trooping the Colour, you can join the

crowds of spectators along the Mall to watch all the action.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

1. What is Remembrance Day?- Time: 11 November- Purpose: Special day to remember all those men and women who were

killed during the two World Wars and other conflicts (known as

Armistice Day, after the Second World War renamed: Remenbrance

Day)

- Special services are held at war memorials and churches all overBritain.

- Place: Cenotaph in Whitehall, London.

The Queen lays the first wreath at the Cenotaph.

People leave small wooden crosses by the memorials in remembrance of

a family member who died in war.

2. The Last Post- The Last Post

played tointroduce the two

minute silence in

Remembrance

Day ceremonies.

- It is usuallyplayed on a

bugle.

3. Ode of Remembrance- A poem called For the Fallen by

Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) is

often read aloud during the

ceremony:

They shall grow not old, as we that areleft grow old

Age shall not weary them, nor the year

condemn.

At the growing down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

4. Poppy Day- Remembrane Day is also known

as Poppy Day because itstraditionally to wear an artificial

poppy.

- Poppies are sold by the RoyalBritish Legion, a charity

dedicated to helping war

veterans.

5. Two Minute Silence

- At 11am on Remembrance Day, a two minutes observed at warmemorials and other public spaces across the country

- The First Two Minute Silence in London (11th November 1919) asreported in the Manchester Guardian, 12th November 1919.

'The first stroke of eleven produced a magical effect.

The tram cars glided into stillness, motors ceased to cough and fume,

and stopped dead, and the mighty-limbed dray horses hunched back

upon their loads and stopped also, seeming to do it of their own volition.

Someone took off his hat, and with a nervous hesitancy the rest of the

men bowed their heads also. Here and there an old soldier could bedetected slipping unconsciously into the posture of 'attention'. An

elderly woman, not far away, wiped her eyes, and the man beside her

looked white and stern. Everyone stood very still ... The hush deepened.

It had spread over the whole city and become so pronounced as to

impress one with a sense of audibility. It was a silence which was

almost pain ... And the spirit of memory brooded over it all.'
