LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

THE COLLECT Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord's resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE LESSON A Reading from the Word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 10 beginning at the 34th verse Peter opened his mouth and said: "Truly I perceive that God shows no partiality, but in every nation any one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the word which he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), the word which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. And we are witnesses to all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and made him manifest; not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that he is the one ordained by God to be judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear

PSALM 118: 14-29

14.The Lord is my strength and my song, * and he has become my salvation.

15.There is a sound of exultation and victory* in the tents of the righteous.

16."The right hand of the Lord has triumphed! * the right hand of the Lord is exalted! the right hand of the Lord has triumphed!"

17.I shall not die, but live, * and declare the works of the Lord.

18.The Lord has punished me sorely, * but he did not hand me over to death.

19.Open for me the gates of righteousness; * I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the Lord.

20."This is the gate of the Lord; * he who is righteous may enter."

21.I will give thanks to you, for you answered me* and have become my salvation.

22.The same stone which the builders rejected * has become the chief cornerstone.

!4

Page 5: Easter sunday 2015

23.This is the Lord's doing, * and it is marvellous in our eyes.

24.On this day the Lord has acted; * we will rejoice and be glad in it.

25.Hosannah, Lord, Hosannah!* Lord, send us now success.

26.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; * we bless you from the house of the Lord.

27.God is the Lord; he has shined upon us; * form a procession with branches up to the horns of the altar.

28."You are my God, and I will thank you;* you are my God, and I will exalt you."

29.Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;* his mercy endures for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now: and shall be forever. Amen.

THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Colossians Chapter 3 beginning at the 1st verse. Since you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Reader: Here ends the Reading All: Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL A Reading from the Holy Gospel

according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time when the sabbath was past, Mary Mag'dalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salo'me, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back; -- it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you." And they went out and fled from the tomb; for trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and they said nothing to any one, for they were afraid.

The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ our Lord.

The Archbishop of the West Indies, Primate and Metropolitan,

and The Bishop of Barbados The Most Reverend Dr The Honourable John W.D.

Holder, CBE, LLD THE BISHOP’S EASTER MESSAGE

Easter day is the centre piece of the Christian faith. All we believe as Christians, is connected to Easter. On this day, Christians celebrate three important things. We celebrate, first of all, the resurrection of Our Lord which tells of the power of God to transform conditions that seem hopeless into conditions that are full of life and hope. The Easter celebrations teach us that the worse conditions of life can improve . Sometimes things may not be as bad as they seem at first.

To the friends of Jesus who were devastated by Good Friday, all seemed lost. But there was a dramatic turn around, when the

!6

Page 7: Easter sunday 2015

women of the group had an encounter early on the Sunday morning with the risen Lord. God had raised him up, was their cry. Death had been conquered by the power of God.

This power of God to transform what may seem as hopeless conditions into new possibilities is still available to us. There can be dramatic transformations in our lives, not unlike those experienced by Our Lord’s disciples. What is even more important, is that we can assist in creating this transformation process in someone’s life.

Secondly, today, we also celebrate the entire life of Jesus, a life that shows us how this great gift of God called life is to be lived. His life of love could not be diminished by death. Easter is a celebration of life. It is not only about eternal life in the Kingdom of God, but also about life here and now, in this world.

Today as we celebrate life, and thank God for the resurrection of Jesus Our Lord, let us pause and reflect on life today as we experience it. For resurrection is not simply a gift waiting for us after death, but an experience of God’s power that we can share with someone today.

Be an experience of God’s power of resurrection for someone you know today. There are many persons whose lives may be clouded by experiences of Good Friday: Pain, loss, uncertainty. Be an experience of God’s power of resurrection for them.

Thirdly, today, we celebrate hope. Christians believe that the hope we have in God through Jesus Our Lord, takes us through life to death and beyond death. This is our Easter hope. We put it to work to encourage and to build up confidence in those persons who may be weighed down by the problems of life. As we sing our Easter hymns this morning, let us commit ourselves to be a source of God’s Easter hope for someone who really needs it in their lives.

May God grant you a blessed Eastertide.

Your Friend and Bishop +John Barbados
