Prayer Chain

The Living Rosary Prayer Chain here at St. Au-gustine's is open to all those who would like to pray for the needs of others. God has blessed our group with many miracles over the past 20 years. If you are interested in being a part of this awesome minis-try, please call Joni at 541-996-5636.

Join your fellow parishioners to pray the Rosary 1/2 hour before each Mass. Be-come closer to Our Blessed Mother through the Rosary. Also, Father used a great slogan, that I believe originated with Bishop Fulton Sheen. The Family That Prays Together, Stays together!

The Most Holy Trinity (05/27/2018)

Today we celebrate the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The doctrine of the Trinity is

considered to be foundational for all Christian theology and spirituality. In the lives of most ordi-

nary Christians any understanding of the Trinity is bypassed by regulating it to the status of

“Mystery,” which means, it is beyond our comprehension. Of course, it is very difficult to under-

stand the mystery. But at the same time we need to be catechized regarding the doctrine of the Trini-

ty. The doctrine of the Trinity affirms that there is one God, eternally existing in three persons: Fa-

ther, Son, (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit. The three persons of the godhead are coequal and coe-

ternal.

The doctrine of the Trinity is the result of a great deal of prayer, worship and discussion. The

doctrine was solidified by prominent theologians such as Tertullian, Augustine and many others.

The beginnings of this doctrine can be traced back to the scripture. One can find there are the bits

and pieces flowing from the prayer and religious experience of the early believers, which eventually

were shaped into the Church’s official formulation of the Trinity.

The readings of today for this Solemnity provide us with a good example of those bits and

pieces of Trinitarian thought and prayer. The author of Deuteronomy did not have the Trinity in

mind when writing today’s first reading. But, what is given here is the understanding of God as a

dynamic, unique being who is all-powerful and creative. These thoughts and prayers helped the early

Christians begin reflecting on the person of the Father in relationship to the Son and the Holy Spirit.

In the second reading we can see St. Paul is reflecting on the new relationships believers have

with God due to the Spirit that is within them. Here St. Paul is focusing on the dynamic role of the

Spirit and how important that role is for every believer.

In the gospel we read that Jesus calls his disciples together one last time and commissions

them to go and make disciples of all nations. It is important to know that the scope of the Christian

mission is universal. What is especially significant, is Jesus’ mandate that his disciples baptize the

new followers in the name of the Fathers and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. It is the clear expres-

sion of the belief in the Trinity. The teachings of this doctrine are yet to come. Thank you, Lord, Fa-

ther, Son and Holy Spirit.
