From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto ...

APRIL 16, 2017

My Dear Friends, Holy and Happy Easter to all of you, St. Martha

parishioners and visitors. When on that fateful Friday, a little, sad funeral was

hastily bringing Jesus’ lifeless body to be buried in a brand new tomb donated by a friend of the Master. Everything seemed lost and pointless! The Romans, oppressors of the Jewish nation, had crucified Jesus.

The Great Healer, who could raise the dead, was Himself a pierced, lifeless, dead body! The intoxication of the triumphant entrance into Jerusalem had faded into an unbroken despair! All the dreams of a glorious restoration of a Jewish Kingdom were now seen just as a bad joke: “We were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:21). All the talk of being the Son of God and rising from the dead (Mark 9:9-10) were now seen as the manic expressions of a kind, charismatic and gentle, but self-deluded, mentally deranged crazy man.

Nobody on that early Sunday morning took Jesus’ Resurrection seriously! The disciples, at least those who didn’t run away from Jerusalem, were locked in their upper room, waiting for the fateful knock on the door by the Temple guards, and waiting to be arrested, or worse, for following Jesus. The women were just wondering who was going to roll the tombstone. If they had believed in Jesus’ Resurrection, they would not have gone to the tomb in the first place! Of all the people standing at the foot of the cross, only one did not go to the tomb: Mary, the Mother of Jesus!

Mary from Magdala was the leader of the women who went to cry over Jesus’ body. But when the women went to the tomb, they found an empty tomb. Mary of Magdala ran up to the cenacle, the upper room of the Last Supper, and told Simon Peter: “They have taken the Lord from the tomb and we don’t know where they have put him.” Meanwhile, the other women were objects of an angelic vision which stunned them into speechless silence. Peter, John and Magdalene went to the tomb, and young John was puzzled, not only by the fact of the empty tomb itself, but by the fact that the burial shroud was there but rolled up on one side, and the Sudarium (face cloth) rolled up in another place. Right then, John realized that the body was not stolen, but that the Lord had risen. Then, leaving Magdalene kneeling down in tears facing the black opening of the empty tomb, Peter and John left. They went back to the cenacle where the news of the empty tomb had brought so much sadness, because the other disciples realized that Jesus’ enemies did not even want to let his body rest in peace.

Then Jesus, alive and well, appeared to Mary Magdalene! And the few passersby of the still deserted streets of Jerusalem saw a young woman running and screaming like crazy: “He’s alive, He’s risen!” And she pounded on the locked door of the cenacle. When Jesus’ half-distraught disciples opened the door and listened to Mary’s screams, they thought that she had gone mad with pain at Jesus’ tragic death, and at the ultimate insult to

His memory by His tomb’s profanation, and by stealing His martyred body.

And then…”Shalom” (Peace to You)… they turned and just there inside the locked door, unmistakably alive and well, smiling, and radiant, was Jesus,… He did rise as He had promised!

Today, we, Jesus’ followers, share the inexpressible joy of the early disciples in recognizing the incredible, impossible, mind-boggling reality of Jesus’ Resurrection, which makes us certain of our own resurrection and

eternal life in Paradise, forever and ever! So, my dear friends, let us follow Jesus in accepting to carry our crosses, in facing our sufferings and death, in looking at our tomb as a door to heaven, all knowing well that we will have a second, glorious, endless life with our Savior Jesus. And not only we Christians, but also all, who have followed in life the image of God embedded in every human being, will be saved. Bishop Frank Dewane invites the Catholic community to join him at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, April 30, at Epiphany Cathedral, for an Hour of Remembrance commemorating the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. The guest speaker will be Rabbi Howard A. Simon who

has served for many years in building interreligious dialogue in our city. This diocesan Yom Hashoah will bring together members of the Jewish and Christian communities, as encouraged by the Holy Father, to remember the victims of hate, and to help build a climate of respect where such tragedies may never again be possible. All parishioners are encouraged to attend this annual memorial to the Holocaust. The event is free and open to the public.

Next Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday. Pope John Paul II canonized Sister Faustina Kowalska in April 2000, and May 23, 2000 the name Divine Mercy Sunday was announced to all Catholics worldwide

Between the years 1930 and 1938, Jesus appeared to St. Faustina and promised to be especially merciful to those who ask for forgiveness and take part in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Communion. She was a Sister of Mercy and started the devotion for the Divine Mercy. The Divine Mercy Sunday celebration at St. Martha will begin at 2:30 p.m. with Confession, then the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be said, followed by Mass and veneration of the image. Please join us to receive the graces promised by Jesus on this special day.

Saturday, April 22, is Earth Day. Care of God’s creation is one of the basic principles of Catholic Social Doctrine. Observing Earth Day provides us an opportunity to highlight the importance we all play as proper stewards of God’s earth. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, in his Message of the World Day of Peace (2007), wrote: Experience shows that the disregard for the environment always harms human coexistence… It becomes more and more evident that there is an inseparable link.

Easter is the Feast of Life, and we are the People of Life. We seek to apply Christ's victory over death to the problems of our day. We are a pro-life people. We say yes to every life, no matter how

vulnerable or burdensome. It is an Easter yes; it is a yes filled with hope. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad!

It is only right, with all the powers of our heart and mind, to praise you, Father, and your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Dear Father, by your wondrous condescension of loving-kindness toward us, your servants, you gave up your Son. Dear Jesus, you paid the debt of Adam for us to the Eternal Father by your blood poured forth in loving-kindness. You cleared away the darkness of sin by your magnificent and radiant resurrection. You broke the bonds of death and rose from the grave as a conqueror. You reconciled heaven and earth. Our life had no hope of eternal happiness before you redeemed us. Your resurrection has washed away our sins, restored our innocence, and brought us joy. How inestimable is the tenderness of your love! Amen.

Prayerful Defund Planned Parenthood Rally Saturday, April 29

Planned Parenthood, 736 Central Avenue Protests to Defund Planned Parenthood will be held nationwide, including at the facility here in Sarasota, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with speakers at 10:00 a.m. Planned Parenthood is the leading provider of abortion (over 320,000 per year) yet it does not offer a full range of diagnostic tests and offers virtually no prenatal care. The half billion taxpayer dollars to be defunded from Planned Parenthood should be redirected to the thousands of Federally Qualified Health Centers which offer a much wider range of important services. For information, contact James Kurt at [email protected] or 941-371-7339.

A PRAYER FOR HEALING VICTIMS OF ABUSE

God of endless love,

ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just:

You gave your only Son to save us by his blood on the cross.

Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering

the pain of all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit

by those who betrayed the trust placed in them. Hear the cries of our brothers and sisters

who have been gravely harmed, and the cries of those who love them. Soothe their restless hearts with hope, steady their shaken spirits with faith.

Grant them justice for their cause, enlightened by your truth.

Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds

and transform brokenness into wholeness. Grant us the courage and wisdom,

humility and grace, to act with justice. Breathe wisdom into our prayers and labors.

Grant that all harmed by abuse may find peace in justice. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY APRIL 23 AT 2:30 P.M.

It became known to us as “Divine Mercy Sunday” on May 23, 2000, less than a month after Pope John Paul II canonized Sister Faustina Kowalska a saint of the

Catholic Church. He, himself, was canonized, with Pope John XXIII, on Divine Mercy Sunday in 2014. St. Martha will celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday starting at 2:30 p.m., in the Church. This will include confession, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, Mass and veneration.

A Message from our Bishop… Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Christ the Lord is Risen, Alleluia! A Happy and Blessed Easter to one and all!

Today we celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! The Risen Lord gives us the hope that we too will rise again and live with Him for eternity. As people of hope, we live the promise of a share in His Resurrection.

This message of hope is written throughout Scripture and gives to you and to me the confidence that God loves us. We know God will never abandon us regardless of the trials we face in our life on earth. In the Gospel of St. John, Jesus tells us "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die."

While today the tomb is empty a new chapter begins for humanity. Easter gives us a new beginning. Following the call of Pope Francis, let us go forward and rejoice bringing the joy of the Gospel to those around us by liv-ing lives filled with love, compassion and mercy. Let us share with others the joy of the Resurrection and the hope for eternal life.

May the joy of the Risen Christ be with you and your family this Easter Season! God Bless You!!

Sincerely yours in Christ, + Bishop Frank J. Dewane

Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida
