Paschal Candle

Page 2: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Dear friends in Christ: On this most holy night, in which our Lord Jesus passed over from death to life, the Church invites her members, dispersed throughout the world, to gather in vigil and prayer.

Page 3: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

For this is the Passover of the Lord, in which, by hearing his Word and celebrating his Sacraments, we share in his victory over death.

Rejoice now, heavenly hosts and choirs of angels, and let your trumpets shout Salvation for the victory of our mighty King.

Page 12: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Rejoice and sing now, all the round earth, bright with a glorious splendor, for darkness has been vanquished by our eternal King.

Page 13: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Rejoice and be glad now, Mother Church, and let your holy courts, in radiant light, resound with the praises of your people.

Page 14: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

The Lord be with you.And also with you.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Page 15: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

It is truly right and good, always and everywhere, with our whole heart and mind and voice, to praise you, the invisible, almighty, and eternal God, and your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord;

Page 16: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who at the feast of the Passover paid for us the debt of Adam’s sin, and by his blood delivered your faithful people.

Page 17: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

This is the night, when you brought our fathers, the children of Israel, out of bondage in Egypt, and led them through the Red Sea on dry land.

Page 18: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

This is the night, when all who believe in Christ are delivered from the gloom of sin, and are restored to grace and holiness of life.

Page 19: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

This is the night, when Christ broke the bonds of death and hell, and rose victorious from the grave.

Page 20: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

How blessed is this night, when earth and heaven are joined and all are reconciled to God.

Page 21: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Holy Father, accept our evening sacrifice, the offering of this candle in your honor. May it shine continually to drive away all darkness.

Page 22: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

May Christ, the Morning Star who knows no setting, find it ever burning – he who gives his light to all creation and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Page 25: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Hallelujah! When Israel came out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange speech,

Judah became God’s sanctuary and Israel his dominion.

The sea beheld it and fled; Jordan turned and went back. The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like young sheep.

Page 94: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

What ailed you, O sea, that you fled? O Jordan, that you turned back?

You mountains, that you skipped like rams? you little hills like young sheep?

Page 95: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turned the hard rock into a pool of water and flint-stone into a flowing spring.

The Holy Communion

Page 131: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

The Lord be with you.And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Page 132: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Page 133: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Gratitude, praise, hearts lifted high, voices full and joyful. . . these you deserve.

God, when we were nothing, you made us something.

Page 134: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

When we had no name and no faith and no future, you called us your children.

When we lost our way or turned away, you did not abandon us.

Page 135: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

When we came back to you, your arms opened wide in welcome.

And look, you prepare a table for us, offering not just bread, not just wine, but your very self

Page 136: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

so that we may be filled, forgiven, healed, blessed and made new again. You are worth all our pain and all our praise.

And so we join the saints and angels in proclaiming your glory, as we say:

Page 137: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

O ruler of the universe, Lord God, great deeds are they that you have done, surpassing human understanding. Your ways are ways of righteousness and truth, O King of all the ages.

Page 138: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Who can fail to do you homage, Lord, and sing the praises of your Name? For you only are the Holy One. All nations will draw near and fall down before you, because your just and holy works have been revealed.

Page 139: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church
Page 140: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son,

Page 141: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself

Page 142: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

yet we were heedless to his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you.

Page 143: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

And so, Father, we bring you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Page 144: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said,

“Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

Page 145: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said,

“Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new

Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Page 146: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Father, we now celebrate the memorial of your Son. By means of this holy bread and cup, we show forth the

Page 147: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

sacrifice of his death, and proclaim his resurrection, until he comes again.

Gather us by this Holy Communion into one body in your Son Jesus Christ.

Page 148: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Make us a living sacrifice of praise. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

Page 149: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

And now, let us pray the prayer our Savior Christ taught us:

Page 150: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church
Page 151: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.Give us today our daily bread.

Page 152: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.

Page 153: Easter Vigil 2012 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever.

Amen.
