Teachers’ Strike – Wednesday The NSW Teachers Federation has called a 24 Hour Strike for this coming Wednesday 27th June. The strike centre’s on the governments ‘Local Schools Local Decisions policy. More information about the proposed changes and issues is available from http://www.localcuts.com.au/ and http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au. The Year 3 and 4 Excursion to Newcastle will go ahead as per the excursion note. Students will need to be at school no later than 9.30am The Year 12 Exams scheduled for Wednesday will also go ahead with some minor changes to the exam timetable. Any student who misses their exam will need a doctor’s certificate. Fees We still have a significant number of students with outstanding fees. As it is now well into the school year I ask that you give this matter your urgent attention by returning full or part payment to the office. I am particularly concerned about students who have elected to take subjects such as hospitality, wood and/or metal technology photography and visual arts which attract subject fees larger than other

subjects. As these subjects have been elected with full knowledge of their fees, payment is required to cover consumables. As the cost of buying consumables for these and other elective subjects is very high, we simply cannot afford to provide all that we would like if we have students electing a subject and then not contributing. If you wish to discuss any matter which may be preventing or delaying payment, please contact me so that I am aware of the circumstances and can make special arrangements, such as paying by instalments, with you. A reminder, that as per the school’s excursion policy, students with outstanding fees will not be allowed to attend school excursions or extra-curricular activities. Captains The vote for the 2012-2013 Captain took place last week. As usual we had a very talented and worthwhile group of candidates. Congratulations to the successful students and thank you for all those that put themselves forward for this important role within the school and our community.

Bulahdelah Central School Captains & Vice Captains for 2012-2013

The Captains’ and SRC induction assembly will now take place on Wednesday 18th July (Week 1 Term 3) and begin at 10am in the Gym.

As we head into the final week of term I would like to thank all students, parents and staff who have contributed to the learning at our school throughout the term. We have had a large number of extracurricular activities this term including, sport, Taree Eisteddfod, debating, study days, theatre visits and road safety excursions. As well all students in secondary have completed half yearly exams and in the case of Years 7 and 9 completed their NAPLAN tests. We are hoping to send home 7-10 reports at the end of the week and parents will be able to talk to their child’s teachers and discuss their child’s progress on Thursday 19th July at our parent teacher evening. This week Year 8 students will receive their Year 9 elective booklet to start the process of choosing their subjects for Year 9 in 2013. A letter outlining important dates in the process will be sent home to parents.

Last week one of our students Molly Wilton in Year 9 attended a training day for the Hunter Regional Lawn Bowls team. Molly had participated in the Lawn Bowls team in the CHS championships in Wollongong earlier in the term where her team had gained 5th place. Congratulations Molly on an excellent effort in what is a very competitive sport. Our SRC and Captains elections were held last week. Congratulations to all the students who were elected to those positions. Our induction for student leaders will now take place next term in Week 1 due to HSC Trials and Year 12 being absent this week. Finally I would like to wish all students and staff a happy and enjoyable holiday and remind parents that secondary students will commence Term 3 on Tuesday 17th July.

From the commencement of the 2012 school year, the ambulance Service of New South Wales and the NSW Department of Education and Communities have entered into an arrangement for state wide insurance coverage for the provision of emergency ambulance services to all enrolled NSW Government school students. This means that students enrolled at BSC are covered under the Ambulance Service of NSW Group Cover Scheme-Schools (AGCS-S), in accordance with the policy established by the Ambulance Service of NSW. This means that for 2012 NSW government schools do not have to arrange individual payments to the Ambulance Service of NSW – coverage is included through a single central agreement. Here we are at the end of another busy and very productive term. Much learning has taken place over the past 10 weeks and I would like to thank my staff for their efforts, often going above and beyond their roles and responsibilities, to ensure a variety of educational and enjoyable learning experiences. I would like to thank the majority of our students for making the most of the opportunities available to them to participate and excel in. Thanks also to the parents for your continued input and support. I look forward to continuing the partnership throughout Term 3. I am very excited to announce the beginning of the kitchen classes in our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program, in Term 3, for all students in Years 3-6. Students in Years 3&4 will participate in a kitchen class once a fortnight and all students in Years 5&6 will participate in weekly kitchen classes. We are very fortunate to have the expertise of Nikki Dixon as our kitchen specialist. Nikki has much experience in this role and the students are going to love learning in the kitchen. Justine Thompson comes on board the program as joint garden specialist one day per fortnight. Justine will continue to build on the

work already started in the garden. Welcome Justine!! We always need more volunteers for our program so if you would like to assist in either the kitchen and/or garden program we would love to have you. Just contact me at school for details. Reports have been completed and these will be available to parents this week. Parent / Teacher interviews will take place early in Term 3. We have a very busy start to Term 3 with a variety of educational extra curricula learning opportunities available for the students….See some dates for your diary. The term may nearly be over but we still have some exciting things happening this week including the Middle School Mini Olympiad Day, Merit Assembly, stage 2 excursion and reward days. Have a restful holiday and I’ll see you all next term. Some dates for your diary: 28th June ES1/S1 reward day, 19th July Discover Uni Day (Yr 6), 25th July Debate V Bungwahl.

Simply start collecting stickers at the checkout of your local Woolworths supermarket (self-service too) until July 22nd to place on your child’s sticker card. There’ll be one sticker for every $10 spent, excluding purchases of liquor, smoking/tobacco products and gift cards. Once completed, simply drop the sticker card into a collection box, either at your school or at your local Woolworths. If you don’t have any children at school, you can still help support a local school simply by

dropping your stickers into one of the collection boxes found at the front of the store. We can’t wait to help your school earn valuable learning resources - just by shopping at Woolworths. Last year we gave away over $4.5 million worth of resources to more than 6,900 schools that participated across Australia.

Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Two in three people who spend their life here develop some form of skin cancer. Most skin cancers are caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Children have sensitive skin, which places them at particular risk of sunburn and skin damage. In fact, exposure during the first 15 years of life can greatly increase the risk of developing skin cancer late in life. Most skin cancers can be prevented by reducing exposure to UV radiation. Primary schools are a significant setting for promoting positive sun protection behaviour and have the potential to make an important contribution to reducing the lifetime risk of skin cancer of children in

their care because: Students attend school 5 days a week and are often play outdoors when UV radiation levels are high. Teachers play an important role in influencing

students’ knowledge, attitudes and behaviour. Teachers have the opportunity to educate

students and families about the importance of sun protection and help establish lifelong behaviours.

Sun protection measures complement the OH&S and Duty of Care policies already in place in schools.

A visual commitment to sun protection increases the profile of the school within the community.
