On Friday the 18th of April a Custom House best XI side played the familiar faces

of Powerhouses in an 11 aside fixture which resulted in a 4-0 defeat.

Amadi: We were pants and must do better against opposition of similar

strength! 18JUL14

clusive insight on the game.

Powerhouses XI 4 vs 0 CHXI - Match report by Coach JP Attwood Venue: West Ham Memorial Park KO: 17:30 Line UP: Egheosa, Franklin Amadi, Shamil Aggrey, Liam Willis, Ricky Attfield, Ryan Medcraft, Russell Jones, Adam Loveday, Andrew Elie, David Harrison, Jean-Paul Attwood, Seun Apena.

We set up in the very popular 4-2-3-1 formation. Our intention being to stretch the opposition by

keeping our four attackers very high up the field and to counter attack quickly, creating 4vs4 situa-

tions against their back line.

The first 20 minutes were fairly evenly contested with the Powerhouses having a slight possession

advantage. We created plenty of good opportunities with David Harrison, myself and Andrew Elie

all bursting into the box on several occasions but our finishing let us down . After this things be-

gan to go downhill swiftly, we were seeing even less possession, after a couple of saves by our

stand in goalkeeper (Egheosa), we conceded the first goal of the game. When a semi-professional

player they had fielded bursts clean from Frank (Amadi) at left back and chips the keeper,

although Frank does recover well he couldn’t reach the loose ball for the clearance.

Page 5: Eastlife 18aug14

The team’s morale took a big hit and it set the tone for the rest of the game. By this time, the game plan had gone out of the

window, the team’s wingers were having to operate as wingbacks when out of possession and when we did recover it, our

centre forward and attacking midfielder were having to drop into our own half to get on the ball. In fairness Harrison had just

returned from Holiday and it’s not unusual to see bits of rust. Aside from that, Amadi, Loveday, Jones and Medcraft all had

chances as the half went on with only Medcraft registering a shot on target out with a volley sweetly struck but at a comforta-

ble height for the goal keeper. The centre backs (Willis and Aggrey) in combination with the keeper did well to bring us in level

at half time.

Half time saw a few player rotations, one of the many benefits of pre season friendly’s is seeing players try out different posi-

tions.

The second half couldn’t have got off to a worse start, conceding a penalty early on which left us 2-0 down. Our chances were

limited in the second half, and apart from a couple of efforts from range we never really troubled their keeper. One positive to

take from the game was the way our makeshift back 4 coped with the constant assault on our goal, even though we conceded

4 times in the end, it could have been much worse.

Goal kicks were another weak area for us, 4 out of 5 times we lost the aerial battle, and we found ourselves out of possession

once again, this led to us chasing the ball again where powerhouses were letting the ball do the work. Combined with 26 de-

gree heat and a severe lack of substitutes, our team was exhausted as the first half drew to a close.

Understanding why we lost so heavily against a team of similar stature isn’t a straight forward question. The managers point of

view is he placed too much responsibility on inexperienced players like Loveday and Attfield. But sometimes football provides

the heat for the baptism of fire,. If everyone at the club is serious about realising their potential we have to work hard on the

training ground and in subsequent matches to prevent any repeats.

Do you eat Healthily? Looking for tips? Eastlife will cover a particular dish/ ingredient that has properties

that are useful to those wishing to maintain a healthy diet . This editions focus is Bananas, Enjoy this special-

ist piece, courtesy of Alex Cooper.

Bananas are one of the most popular and widely eaten fruits in the world, yet the majority of people are likely

unaware of just how effective and beneficial consumption of them can be.

A medium-sized banana contains just 105 calories, making it an ideal guilt-free snack at any point in the day.

While the majority of these calories come from carbohydrates and, in particular sugar, this is not a cause for con-

cern.

The natural sugar fructose, found in fruits, is much better for you than the sucrose in table sugar. Bananas are

relatively low on the glycemic index, meaning that they will provide slow-releasing energy over a sustained peri-

od, rather than processed sugars which can cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate rapidly.

This naturally has a benefit for athletes and sportsmen, who need to have high stores of energy to perform at

their optimum level. When you perform physical activity your body uses glycogen, a form of carbohydrate, to

fuel your muscles.

Eating sources of carbohydrates will increase exercise endurance and they are generally more effective than us-

ing fats or protein as the basis for energy, making bananas an ideal fuel source to enable people to perform

harder and for longer.

Consumption of a banana before a workout or match/training can be an ideal time, to prevent the negative

effects of low blood sugar levels which can lead to fatigue. The relatively low GI of bananas means that blood

sugar levels will rise gradually and give a sustained source of energy rather than a spike followed by a crash as

some other sources of carbohydrate could cause. After eating one you should wait a short while before exercis-

ing or playing sports for maximum effect- at least half an hour.

They also make a great post-workout snack. Their natural sugars are used to rebuild muscle glycogen stores,

your muscles’ main energy source, to make sure energy levels are not depleted and your body can perform at a

high level for the next workout. Combined with some protein to help repair muscle tissue this can make an effec-

tive snack after strenuous exercise such as resistance training.

Bananas also contain a number of vitamins and minerals, with a host of benefits to those with an active lifestyle.

These include a range of B vitamins, vitamin C, manganese, potassium and dietary fibre. They are low in fat, cho-

lesterol and sodium.

An average banana contains around ten percent of the recommended daily allowance of potassium, considera-

bly more than the majority of other fruits including apples and oranges. Potassium is essential for muscle, brain

and nerve function, as well as lowering blood pressure due to vasodilation effects and giving protection against

loss of muscle mass. Increased potassium intake combined with low sodium is also an important factor in reduc-

ing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Vitamin C consumption has been linked to a reduction in cancer-causing free radicals, consumption of fibre can

improve digestive health and a study at Imperial College London even found that children eating just one banana

Quick Facts Age: 19 Height: 6ft Weight: 179.6lbs Position: Striker Preseason appearances: 6 Goals: 3 Weird FACT: David can also play in goal where he has played in non-competitive matches in spells.

I love football however I only started playing seriouslythis year cause I was playing

rugby before for East London RFC. I joined the team after meeting the gaffer (Frank)

at college about 5 or 6 months ago. Back then I played under him as my captain for a

few games and he asked if I wanted to play for the CH7s. In that game I featured in

the 2nd half where I was first introduced to Andrew Elie (my current strike partner). I

managed two rapid assists setting up Andrew for one of the goals in that 4-2 win.

I’ve brought a lot from rugby to football I think for one example was the clubs

1st ever 11 aside goal against Colesbrook Royals U18 where I managed to shrug off

their fully grown full back (Player Manager Warren) get into a 1 on 1 situation and

slotted it past the keeper. I want to prove to everyone that doubts me and our

team, that I’m a player who he can be relied on and I also don’t want to disappoint

my team mates so I always try my best. Rugby also taught me how to use aggression

which aren’t always good thing in football I admit. Rugby also got me good with my

hands and upperbody making me a handful for any defence especially when com-

bined with Big Andrew up front.

The number 20 it’s a weird story behind why I wear that number but the main reason

is cause its not a starting eleven number It’s also the amount of goals I want to score

this season and also im turning 20 at the end of year and also every

time I put that shirt on I want to make my family proud as well as the

team my family is one of the reasons why im so involved with sports

but my biggest drive in football is my girlfriend Kayley who has been

behind me since I signed up for CHCFC,My aunt has also watched me

in every game so far and is proud of me so im hoping to make my fam-

ily, girlfriend team mates and coach proud on matchday.

My targets for the season are to

score at least get 20 goals and a

couple of crucial assist but my main

target is to build on new relation-

ships with all of my team mates.

C’mon you Eastsiders!!!!!!!

For reasons unknown everyone in the camp was really in that feel good zone; maybe it was the good weather? Well whatever

it was it didn’t change the fact that the days opponents were playing 2 divisions above us. We were the new team, but every-

one had really come to win. Prior to kick off we received a massive blow in the fact that club captain Kyle O’brien had come

down with food poisoning. In his truly exemplar nature he still endeavoured to come down and cheer on the boys; none the

less unfit to play. We had a full roster of players either way but this did mean starting 2 debutants in the middle of the park,

both of whom go by the nickname of “Mo”. One was Mohammed Azziz who usually plays with the Custom House Sevens and

the other is Moses whom has never made an appearance for the club. Both ended up on the scoresheet. Other debutants in-

cluded Tom Clarke who operated as a deep lying striker , Edmund Bodom the defensive protégé who is also younger brother to

the vice captain Steven Bodom and Mustapha Azziz who despite being the youngest player on the field had maturity his baby-

face may not initially suggest.

A great game for the neutrals as the scoreline suggests. All areas of the field looked like they had developed well since our last

game. Really a broadsheet is required to sum up everything that happened. Notably, Jones (#19 above) scored the opener his

first goal for the club, playing in his more natural position on the flank. In the absence of the skipper, Steven Bodom fulfilled his

duties as VC and wore the armband first half whilst Bradley ‘the brickwall’ Fields functioned as skipper in the second half. Mo-

hammed Azziz scores a 40 yard FreeKick due to a serious goal keeping blunder and Andrew Elie bags a stunning solo effort

wear the ball is picked up just inside the opposition half. The defence leaked 3 however looked really strong and operated a

vortex like offside trap.

As this was the last warm up game prior

to the start of the seven aside season;

seven aside regular—Ray Subryan—is

seen here dutifully doing his prematch

stretches fully focused on helping the

team secure the cup!

In the end we ran out 8—5 winners.

At the end of the days play this was the

trophy presented to the boys. This could

definitely become an annual game for

the Custom House Sevens. Good oppo-

nents and true gentlemen. Thank you :)

Current Assistant manager John Bruton warms

up former assistant Chris Wade whilst Steven

Dormer looks on as both had a job as players

today.

After the 11 aside notched up a big win against tough opposition there was a

lot of confidence throughout the camp. Not more than 2 minutes were

played before we opened the scoring. The games out and out flair player

(Ryan Reed) slots away a well after beating two players. Another debutant

Obedinho got his name on the scoresheet and also set up many other efforts.

The boys from Wales never gave up and kept on our tails scoring 5 of their

own however we were never behind.

When all was said and done

the visitors began their 200

mile trip back to S.Wales

Page 10: Eastlife 18aug14

We were drawn against Woodford Rangers a team who Wanstead beat 7-1 last season; so leading up to kick off the players

were well pumped because all indications showed that Wanstead will prove tough opponents. In our travelling band Dean Sali-

ba served as linesman but we also had relatives of David Harrison and a good Friend of the skippers on the side line which

means we had 4 non players there to support the lads. Those who know about grassroots football understand the importance

of external support.

The 1st half was sketchy. After squandering a number of half chances, Wanstead drew first blood. An opposition player

luckily jinked past our full back and hit a cross-cum-shot which nestled into the inside wall of the goal. Despite conceding that

goal we were lucky not to go further behind ’cos of the collective effort of the defence with special thanks to Brad the

‘BRICKWALL’ making some crucial saves. Half time was spent refuelling on oranges and reflecting on what we could do differ-

ently. Changes were made. Jonessy showed his versatility and dropped to right full back, Mustapha returned to play in the

middle of the park where he was joined by Edmund Bodom. In the league we are noticeably one of the younger squads, and it

was the link up play of two of our teens David Harrison and John Adeside which led to our first corner of the second half which

the latter firmly headed past a sea of players for the equaliser. Harrison got himself on the scoresheet with another effort with-

in the six yard box making it 3 games running. The game appeared to be wrapped up when Andrew Elie scored the third but it

wasn’t to be. With 10 mins on the clock, 2 controversial goals were scored within 3 mins of each other, both being debatably

offside but at the end of the day it is only the referees whistle which counts. A good game in general for the Eastsider’s as the

season draws nearer.

So some of you may be wondering how did Custom House beat all of their opponents at an aggregate 26-11 if

they only scored 16??? Well….

On Monday the 11th of August, the Custom House Sevens were set to play their first league game of the season.

HOWEVER…

Their opponents a new team at Powerleague forfeited the game less than half an hour before KO. How Power-

league deals with this is by awarding a 10-0 victory to the opponents and if necessary dishes out a summary fine.

So there you have it. The lads who had turned up to see off the opposition was: Andrew Elie, Franklin Amadi,

Kareem Clarke, Ray Subryan, Mustapha and Mohammed Azziz, New Boy Vibes and old face Kassim Omari-

Husbands. Below is another mystery; can you spot the differences?

Answers

1)Moved penalty spot 2) no ball 3) deleted ‘of’4) different colour boots 5) red number 7 added to players left chest.
