It’s the perfect spot to pass through, stop a while, or settle down. Part of Easton’s appeal is its historic and artistic charm. The twin rivers converge here - The Delaware and The Lehigh Valley. The perfect place, ripe for commerce or on your way to commune with nature...

Filled with gorgeous landscapes and colorful, talented residents, Easton Pennsylvania is once again blooming beyond it’s original splendor and people are flocking here just for a peek.

Behind The Seam is a fashionable company that loves premium denim and is environmentally friendly! The company was developed based on love for fashion and a desire to keep textiles out of our landfills.

Over 2,500,000,000 pounds of used clothing end up in the landfills each year. Plus decomposing clothes release methane, a harmful greenhouse gas and a significant factor to global warming. Recycling our

clothes is one way to help with this growing problem.

Bobby ZeikMy style stems from a street art background while also implementing many fine art techniques and methods used in more traditional art. I am constantly experimenting with new mediums and processes that keep my work both original and also exciting for myself. The ideas that are most appealing to me are the ones I haven’t seen done before, and the pieces that I’ve done that I am most fond of are the ones that were made with the most uncertainty. There is no comfort-zone when it comes to painting for me, and i feel that helps keep my work fresh.

Legends Of League’sA R C A D E S O N A

by Darkenya Adams

Sona has no memories of her true parents. As an infant, she was found abandoned on the doorstep of an Ionian adoption house, nestled atop an ancient instrument in an exquisite case of unknown origins. She was an unusually well-behaved child, always quiet and content. Her caretakers were sure she would find a home quickly, but it soon became apparent that what they mistook for uncommon geniality was actually an inability to speak or to produce any sound whatsoever. Sona remained at the adoption house until her teens, watching in hopeless silence as prospective adopters passed her by.

Photographs by SpirosK Photography © 201430

Page 31: eastOnpop magazine winter 2014

During this time, the caretakers sold her unusual instrument

to anxious collectors, hoping to build her

a trust. For a myriad of bizarre and

unexpected reasons, however,

it would be returned, or simply appear again outside the

house.

When a wealthy Demacian woman

named Lestara Buvelle learned

of the instrument, she immediately

embarked to Ionia. When the caretakers

showcased the instrument for her,

she rose

31

Page 32: eastOnpop magazine winter 2014

wordlessly and explored the house, stopping outside Sona’s room. Without hesitation, Lestara adopted her and

left a generous donation for the instrument. With Lestara’s guidance, Sona discovered a deep connection with the instrument which Lestara called an ‘etwahl’. In her hands, it

played tones which stilled or quivered the hearts of those around her. Within

months, she was headlining with the mysterious etwahl for sold-out audiences. She played as though plucking heartstrings, effortlessly manipulating the emotions of her

listeners - all without a single written note. In secret, she discovered a

potent and deadly use for her etwahl, using its vibrations to slice objects from

a distance. She honed this discipline in private, mastering her gift. When

she felt prepared, she went to the only place which could offer her a fitting

recital: the League of Legends.

‘’Her melody moves the soul, her silence sunders the body.’’

-- Jericho Swain, after attending her concert

...the feline who turned into music

Brigitte Stolk has always been a dreamer ever since she was a child, and realized at an early age that music would play an important part in her life. Spending her spare time writing songs, composing melodies and singing either at home or at school. There was always music in the household. Any genre was welcome, from hard Rock to Zouk music, Funk and Soul music to Pop.

Her musical influences are loud and clear; Michael Jackson and Madonna as well as many others including; Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Aretha Franklin, Cyndi Lauper, Peter Gabriel, U2, Nayanka Bell, Kassav, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan.

She was born in Burundi, but the family moved to the

Netherlands. There she studied languages but it was becoming very clear that she couldn’t stay away from the music scene. Once she got her Diploma in translation (ISTI , Brussels), she immersed herself into the music world and decided to study Jazz music (which she did at the jazz studio of Antwerp). She has been in a number of gospel choirs, was the female vocalist for Hip Hop bands in Belgium, The Netherlands, and France but also performed as a solo artist in the country’s trendiest clubs, festivals, radio and television shows.

In 2002, her first single “I’m sorry” was released, under the moniker “SWEET B”. She followed this with a full-length album release “Solid’air (2004), and singles “Cum 2 mee” (2006)

and “IT’S XMAS” (2008). In 2009, “Cum 2 mee” was chosen as the original soundtrack by French film producer Alain Zirah for his series “The Kat Ladies”.

Brigitte is a multi-facetted artist, who’s been compared to Aalyiah, Tamia and Janet Jackson. She’s been described in a French national newspaper as “the feline who turned into music” (Patricia Maille-Caire). Brigitte has that inner sweetness to her voice. A voice that conveys deep emotions and moves people’s hearts.

Her music has been promoted and heard on radios in Europe and the US and Canada (Tros Radio, Radio één, Bel RTL,

Q-Music, Fun Radio, Radio Forest, Cigale FM, Radio Star, DBC Radio, Amysfm, First Music Radio, Jazz89

Kuvo , Radical.FM, Radio Arcadia, Gayradiobec.com, CKCU FM, Arizona’s Real Rock Radio, etc).

hey. my name is josh finck.

i wear many hats. i make salsa. i serve coffee & alcohol. i 3d print. i handle art. i design posters. and when i have free time [and mostly when i don’t], i make music and interactive installations. what they should tell you in artSchool™ is, “1 out of every 30 of you will have a full time art related job.” i am part of the 66.6%. thats ok, because what a full time job gives you monetarily, it takes

51http://selectronics.bandcamp.com

Page 52: eastOnpop magazine winter 2014

away in time flexibility. I travel to NYC, Chicago, and

Detroit to work jobs and play shows all throughout the year. this allows me

to see different art and music scenes in each of these towns; how they operate, how they thrive.

Ringo plays at the State Theater for $80 a seat. cover bands play at every bar for 5 miles. lets be honest, neither are doing anything new. i moved from Detroit (to Easton [without ever have setting foot here {on Jan 1st 2011}]) and quickly realized that

52

Page 53: eastOnpop magazine winter 2014

the only thing missing in this town was a dedicated music venue. being in its centralized location between NYC & Philly, Easton provides an excellent way point for any traveling band below Ringo and above cover bands [at least in matters of relevance, not visibility]. to widen

the scope past just music, why not include performance art? audio & video installation? creative workshops? These happenings need only one thing - a venue in which to manifest their visions.

i’ve made it my goal to open a venue for such happenings in our dear town. a location has been selected, a timeline has been established - but this project is going to take a lot of work, and a lot of help from the community. Easton is no where near where it was when i moved here. a burnt out building downtown is now a 5 star restaurant and luxury apartments.

development is taking place in every other building from the circle to the Silk Mill. this town is about to be thriving, we are not there just yet - but the infrastructure is almost in place. the density is building. people are moving in every week. i know the need is there.

and if you want to keep up with the progress,

THROUGH THE LENS: BOB GRUEN ROCK & ROLL PHOTOGRAPHER

For more than forty years, Bob Gruen’s name has been synonymous with rock and roll. From taking early photos of Ike and Tina Turner on tour to becoming John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s personal photographer, and from chronicling late nights at CBGB and Max’s Kansas City as the chief photographer for Rock Scene magazine to touring with current

stadium rockers such as Green Day, Gruen has always been at the right place at the right time - and he’s always gotten the unexpected, intimate shot.

In this lavish monograph, complete with personal behind-the-scenes anecdotes, Gruen has curated his favorite photographs from his career. Evident in these pages is not only Gruen’s profound ability to document music history, but also the affection he shares with his subjects, many of whom have become lifelong friends. Featuring such illustrious acts as the Clash, Led Zepplin, the Rolling Stones, Sex Pistols, Ramones, and more, and including an introduction by the legendary Debbie Harry of Blondie, Rock Seen is Gruen’s extraordinary photo album, which he now shares with all fans of rock and roll.

For more than a decade, School of Rock has been inspiring kids to rock on stage and in life. Founded as a single school in Philadelphia, PA in 1998, School of Rock has become a growing international franchise, operating over 100 schools in the US and internationally. We at the Easton School of Rock believe the best way to learn music is to play music. We take students from the lesson room to the stage, developing both their confidence and musicianship with programs designed for all skill levels. School of Rock Easton teaches guitar, bass, vocals, keyboards, drums and combines weekly private music lessons and group band rehearsals to prepare students to take the stage in front of live audiences in an authentic concert setting.

To date SoRockers have played thousands of concerts, to more than 100,000 people, at such legendary venues as CBGB’s, The Trocadero, The Knitting Factory, The Whiskey, The Roxy, The Experience Music Project, The Big Easy and BB King’s Blues Club in Times Square. We have also had the great fortune to be able to perform at music festivals from Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, to Zappanale in Bad Doberan, Germany. Easton School of Rock students have played at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia, Allentown Symphony Hall, The State Theatre of Easton as well as some of the largest music festivals in the Lehigh Valley, including Musikfest and Mayfair. Want to become a great rock musician?

“Hawkeye” Marvel: by Matt Fraction, David Aja, and Matt HollingsworthFor me, it doesn’t get any better. Matt Fraction takes Clint Barton out of the big-action, blockbuster setting and puts him on the streets. Barton, with the help of his protege and former replacement Kate Bishop, spends the first issue of the recently launched series taking down a corrupt

slumlord, rather than get lost in the shuffle slugging it out with Thanos or

some other cosmic big-bad. Fraction paces his story with the right mix of action, tension and dialogue; most notably his interaction with Bishop, introduced in the second issue. But it’s because of Aja’s fantastic art, with the help of the eye-catching inking from Hollingsworth, that really makes

“Hawkeye” pop. The creators not only hit their mark, they landed a

bull’s-eye.

I admit it: I still love comic books. I still love popping in the local comic shop on Wednesdays, when new

books arrive on the shelves. I still love the sense of awe and wonderment

that comes with following the monthly adventures of my favorite characters.

There are many who view comic books simply as “kids’ stuff,” despite the billions Hollywood had raked in from the numerous feature films,

television shows, and merchandising of characters who got their start on the printed

page. The medium is just as, if not more, popular than it has ever been. In other words, now is the perfect time to dive right in. No dipping of the toes, sink or swim, baby.

“Adventures of Superman” DC Entertainment:

Another digital-first series, soars above most of the in-continuity books being published by DC. Each issue contains multiple stories of the Man of Steel doing what he does best: saving lives and being Superman(and while wearing his famous red

trunks, which were removed with the characters’ “New 52”

cosmetic revamp). The stories penned by different writers and

penciled and inked by different artists, are light and fun. Each adventure(get it?)

is self-contained, which means readers are not bogged down by having to know 70 plus years of Superman mythology to follow the stories.

“Batman Black and White” DC Entertainment: As the title suggests, “Batman Black &White” is made up of different,out-of-continuity, Batman stories taken from various periods in the Dark Knight’s history told in black and white. The lack of color and different renderings and interpretations of the character, enhances, not distracts you from the stories. If you are a fan of the Caped Crusader, but don’t want to have to buy three or four Batman related books, just to know what the hell is going on in Gotham CIty(and beyond), “Batman Black & White” should be at the top of your reading list.

Cregar family home. The walls are lined with many family portraits, and we even had the pleasure of meeting their extended

family who was dining at the table adjacent to our own. Their grandson by the way, is just as adorable

as any of the cherub statues they have adorning the space.

After we were seated by Harry Cregar Jr., we were enticed by our server Manuel to try a few of the house specialties. We started off with a gorgeous salad made of crisp lettuce, roasted red peppers, fresh buffalo mozzarella, olives, and some of the most succulent red tomatoes i have ever had, drizzled in a touch of oil and vinegar with a hint of salt and pepper.

H o m e m a d e manicotti stuffed

with fresh ricotta cheese, in a marinara sauce, accented

with a few basil leaves was the next course, a delicate transition into the main course to come. It was the Petite Filet Mignon that Mrs. Frances Cregar is renown for that truly satifies even the best gourmonds’ appetites. A succulent cut of meat!

The Wynwood Walls was conceived by the renowned community revital-izor and placemaker Tony Goldman in 2009. He was looking for some-thing big to transform the warehouse district of Wynwood, and he arrived at a simple idea: “Wynwood’s large

stock of ware-house build-ings, all with no windows, would be my

giant canvases to bring to them the greatest street art ever seen in one place.” Starting with the 25th–26th Street complex of six separate build-ings, his goal was to create a center where people could gravitate to and explore, and to develop the area’s pe-destrian potential.

The Wynwood Walls became a ma-jor art statement with Tony’s com-mitment to graffiti and street art, a genre that he believes is under appre-ciated and not respected historically. He wanted to give the movement more attention and more respect: “By presenting it in a way that has not been done before, I was able to expose the public to something they had only seen peripherally.”

Murals by renowned street artists have covered the walls of the Wynwood Walls complex since 2009, and to create more canvases and

bring more artists to the project, Tony opened the Wynwood Doors in 2010 with 176 feet of roll-up storefront gates. The painted

exteriors and interiors of the doors reveal a portrait gallery. Murals have also been commissioned for

Outside the Walls through 2011, in key locations outside the park itself. The

Wynwood Walls has brought the world’s greatest artists

working in the graffiti and street art genre to

Miami. Jeffrey Deitch co-curated the first successful

year of the project in 2009, collaborating with Tony

before his appointment

as museum director of MOCA Los Angeles. In 2010 and 2011 Tony selected the artists with the help of Goldman Properties Arts Manager Meghan Coleman, and Medvin Sobio of the Visual Arts Collective Viejas Del Mercado, alongside input from a network of artists, curators, and international experts in the street art genre. “We have strived for a diverse representation of both American and international artists that encompasses everything from the old school graffiti artists to the newest work being created around t h e world. The project has truly evolved into what my friend Jeffrey Deitch calls a Museum of the Streets,” Tony summarizes.

After failing to get into the police academy, Chris Potamitis (Liam Hemsworth), settles for a security guard job with the EMPIRE STATE Armored Truck Company. Chris makes the mistake of mentioning the company’s lax security to his best friend, Eddie (Michael Angarano), and is soon unwittingly drawn into an elaborate scheme to rob the abundant amounts of cash being stored there - resulting in the largest cash heist in U.S. History. As the stakes continue to rise, Chris and Eddie must outwit James Ransone (Dwayne Johnson), the veteran NYPD Detective that is hot on their trail, as well as the local crime bosses that want to know who pulled a job on their turf, or suffer the consequences. Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) A new person or emotion-rousing situation

enters your life. It could be the beginning of a new friendship or romance, or the renewal of

one from your past. A current relationship may enter a new phase. Your intuition may also be

heightened during this time. Let go of fear-based energy from you — your surroundings, this

situation, and everyone involved.

Aries (March 20 – April 19)This season is a time of Spiritual transformation

for you, Aries. It is time for you to move on from that which no longer serves your Higher Self.

Be thankful for the knowledge, experience and lessons and let go. Surround yourself with higher vibrational frequencies which will enable you to grow, learn, and prosper — come into your own. A situation or phase is coming to its end. Allow

yourself the release of this energy, as you are be-ing protected and guided through this experience.

Pisces (February 19- March 20) Abundance and financial security are at hand.

You’ve established a lasting foundation of success in business. With this success come feelings of freedom. You draw great comfort from those

around you and your family life is strong, secure, and peaceful during this time. Remember to have and show appreciation for the little things in life. The energy of crystals supports you and helps you

with your present situation.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 19) You’ve completed something of great

importance; enjoy your feelings of wholeness and completion. You’ve grown spiritually and

have evolved to a whole new level in your understanding of the Universe. You’re now

ready to move on to something new. There is the possibility of a new house or job at this time. Use your natural abilities to attract your desired

outcome — the Power of Manifestation.

Taurus (April 19 – May 20) A sense of renewal and introspection surrounds

you over the next few months. Review and evaluate — there is a favorable assessment of the facts. Clear out the “clutter” that is within

and around you and create the space for energy to flow. It is time to move in a new direction, with this change comes opportunity and new

experiences. You are being assisted in speaking your truth, lovingly.

Capricorn (December 21 – January 20)The fruits of your labors continue to grow, and harvest is imminent. Patience is key — you may feel you have far to go, but don’t forget how far you’ve already come. Review and acknowledge your progress from a broader perspective. This is a good time to rest or vacation to recharge

and revitalize. Be open to teaching and learning; attending and giving speeches is part of your

spiritual path and purpose.114

Page 115: eastOnpop magazine winter 2014

Libra (Sept 22 – October 23) An exciting new opportunity comes your way,

embrace this new endeavor! It may seem like a challenge, but it’s one you’re ready for. Outgoing, creative, and passionate about life— utilize your

originality and ingenuity. Believe in yourself. You have a strong bond with nature and your life

purpose involves helping Mother Earth.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 22) Wise beyond your years and wanting to do something more challenging — there is a

possibility for a new area of study or returning to school at this time. Your plans move successfully

forward at a steady pace. Good news about financial matters is coming soon. It is time to let go of behaviors that are blocking you from your

heart’s desire.

Leo (July 22 – August 22) Lavish abundance surrounds you, Leo. Your

creativity and hard work are bringing you great rewards. It is an opportune time to give birth to your dreams — your creative endeavors will be successful. Nurture your Self by spending time

in nature and taking care of your body with massage, yoga, or anything else that makes you feel healthy and vibrant. Your spiritual power

brings great blessings.

Virgo (August 22 – September 22)A mentality of lack is creating a “lack” reality, through the Law of Attraction. Let go of the

fears surrounding money. It’s time to reassess your thoughts, the words you use, and your beliefs about money. Recognize and accept the assistance that is being offered. Matters

will improve. It is important that you care for your physical and emotional health during this time — honor and respect your deep emotional

sensitivity.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Thoughtful, Creative, Warm, Sensible. Remember

to make time for those around you. You have much to give, whether to family, friends, or those less fortunate. Handle any challenges

with understanding and warmth; but also with confidence, resourcefulness, and a sensible

approach. Being in tune with your surroundings enables you to be open to receiving — listen to

your intuitive feelings.

Gemini (May 20 – June 21) With the change of season comes great inner

strength. Listen to your intuition where guidance is needed. Utilize this strength and inner-knowledge to connect with others on a different level. Your

natural abilities and experience will assist with both yours and their own healing process. This is a time to release harsh judgments that you are holding

onto — against yourself or others. Forgiveness and compassion allow you to see the forest through the

trees, even as the leaves fall to the ground.
