Together Follow your heart. This or similar comments are often made when we are faced with a difficult decision. As we agonize over our choices, either we or a friend says Follow your Heart. Usually this is bad advice. The thinking goes, you have a good heart and will do the right thing. The problem is, doing what feels best is often the wrong thing. Jeremiah 17:9 expresses this difficulty: The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? Follow your heart is an expression of doing what you like or want. This makes it the easy way, the greedy way, the self indulgent way and often the wrong way. It is a decision in the moment which does not consider the consequences and future impact. We may end up saying, I thought it was the right thing to do at the time. Follow your heart makes mankind the rule maker. God’s will becomes secondary to the desires of the created. Satan lures us with pleasure and the easy way. He is often the one who says Follow your heart because he can lure us away from Jesus. Fill your mind with scripture, learn the will of Jesus and your heart will incline to righteousness. Read the Bible, especially the New Testament on a regular, even a daily basis. When your mind is filled with the teaching of Jesus and your focus in life is to serve Jesus, then we can follow our heart because it has become like the heart of Jesus. Follow the heart of Jesus. Our culture has turned away from high moral standards that are biblically based. Mankind has always pushed for the selfish, but now it is more than any time during our lifetime. The early disciples faced low moral standards and spread the Gospel throughout the world. We can too.

Are You Okay?
Driving through Texas, a New Yorker collided with a truck carrying a horse. A few months later he tried to collect damages for his injuries. “How can you now claim to have all these injuries?” asked the insurance company’s lawyer. “According to the police report, at the time you said you were not hurt.” “Look,” replied the New Yorker. “I was lying on the road in a lot of pain, and I heard someone say the horse had a broken leg. The next I know, this Texas Ranger pulls out his gun and shoots the horse. Then he turns to me and asks, ‘Are you okay?’” -Readers’ Digest, July 1994
Self-Examination Never Hurts Years ago a boy walked into a drugstore and asked if he could use the telephone. Receiving permission, he took the receiver and said, “Operator, give me number 604. Hello, Dr. Anderson, do you want to hire a boy to cut the grass, milk the cow, and run errands for you? Oh, you already have a boy. Dr. Anderson, are you completely satisfied with the boy you have? OK then. Bye, Doctor.” As the boy thanked the druggist and started out the door, the druggist called to him, “Just a minute son, if you are looking for work, I could use a boy like you.” “Thank you sir,” replied the boy, “but I already have a job.” “Didn’t I just hear you trying to get a job with Dr. Anderson?” “No sir,” said the boy. “I’m the boy working for Dr. Anderson, and I was just checking up on myself.” This points out the great need for self-examination. Perhaps Paul’s exhortation would encourage us: “Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12). -Gary C.
