EASY GUIDE

WORKING AT HEIGHT IS A RISK THAT IMPACTS MANY WORKPLACES - NOT ONLY ABOVE GROUND LEVEL BUT THOSE WORKING BELOW THE GROUNDIt is a priority to keep all staff, visitors and contractors safe in the workplace, based on best practices, compliance to standards, PPE equipment, training, testing (understand expiry dates) and fostering self-ownership.

Investigations by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment into "falls while working at height" show that more than 50% of falls are from less than three metres and approximately 70% of falls are from ladders and roofs.

Contributing factors to injury or death when working at height include:

• Lack of adequate planning and hazard assessment

• Inadequate supervision

• Insufficient training for the task being carried out

• Incorrect protection and equipment choices

• Incorrect use or set-up of equipment including personal protective equipment

• Unwillingness to change the way a task is carried out when a safer alternate is identified

• Suitable equipment being unavailable.**Sourced from the Worksafe website and subsequently referenced in the Best Practice Guide for Working at Height in NZ.

Anchorage is a secure point of attachment (structure) for a fall arrest system. Devices can be temporary or permanent

A full body harness provides a connection point on the worker for the personal fall arrest system. There are many types, aimed at protecting the worker against harm

Connectors are devices used to connect the worker’s full body harness to the anchorage system eg: lanyard, SRL, etc.

Rescue & retrieval of a fallen worker is a required component of any fall arrest system eg: rescue kit, tripod, etc.
