TEEN EXPERIENCE 1 EASY STRING ART SUPPLIES: • 1O”x1O” Styrofoam square (You can use any size, but our directions and quantities are for a 1O”x1O” square.) • 13-inch Fabric square • 13O Brass escutcheon pins or small nails with heads, 1” long (13O for each person) • Embroidery floss • Craft glue • Wooden craft sticks to spread glue (commonly called tongue depressors) • Scissors STEP-BY-STEP: 1. Using a wooden craft stick, put a thin layer of glue over the front of the foam square. Wrap the foam in fabric, smoothing as you go and making neat corners on the back. Use craft glue and nails to secure the corners. 2. Create a shape in the center by sticking evenly spaced nails in the foam. (If you want to get really exact, you can mark the nail spots first using a ruler and pencil or provide shaped templates.) 3. Place nails evenly around the edges of the foam. 4. Double knot the string around a nail to start. 5. Begin wrapping the string from the outside nails to the inside nails. Always wrap clockwise around the nails so your art will look consistent. 6. When you reach the end, tie the string off with another double knot. Note: if you run out of string in the middle, double knot the end and start back in the same place with the next piece of string with a double knot.

EASY STRING ART

SUppLiES:

• 1O”x1O” Styrofoam square (You can use any size, but our directions and quantities are for a 1O”x1O” square.) • 13-inch Fabric square • 13O Brass escutcheon pins or small nails with heads, 1” long (13O for each person) • Embroidery floss • Craft glue • Wooden craft sticks to spread glue (commonly called tongue depressors) • Scissors

STEP-BY-STEP:

(If you want to get really exact, you can mark the nail spots first using a ruler and pencil or provide shaped templates.)

3. Place nails evenly around the edges of the foam. 4. Double knot the string around a nail to start. 5. Begin wrapping the string from the outside nails to the inside nails.

Always wrap clockwise around the nails so your art will look consistent.6. When you reach the end, tie the string off with another double knot.

Decorate a clipboard that can hang on your refrigerator and hold emergency numbers you or a babysitter might need.

SUppLiES:

• Plain clipboard (you pick the size) • Decorative paper • Pencils • Scissors • Mod Podge • Foam sponges • Ribbon

STEP-BY-STEP:

1. Trace your clipboard onto the back of your patterned paper. 2. Cut out the shape. 3. Measure from the top of the clipboard to bottom of the metal paper holder. Measure the width of the metal paper clip. 4. Cut a notch in the paper the length and width you measured (so the paper covers your whole board but fits

around the metal paper clip). 5. Use foam sponges to spread Mod Podge directly on the clipboard. 6. Put the paper in place and smooth it out. Add more Mod Podge around the edges to seal the paper to the board.

Let it dry. 7. Tie a ribbon around the metal paper clip. 8. Use a blank piece of paper and write down emergency numbers. Clip it to the board and hang the board near your phone.

Roll strips of paper tightly around a toothpick and seal with clear nail polish. Allow to dry and then string together to create a unique bracelet.

SUppLiES: For one bead bracelet you will need:

• One page from an old magazine, junk mail, calendar, brochure or a piece of gift wrapping paper. Use colors you like and that have a glossy finish. Don’t worry about words on the page.

• Scissors • Small piece of Styrofoam  • Clear nail polish • Variety of silver or glass beads • Glue stick • Wooden toothpicks • Elastic beading cord (about 9-1O”)

STEP-BY-STEP:

1. Tear or cut the page from a magazine (calendar, brochure, wrapping paper, etc.). Using a paper cutter, utility knife or scissors, cut the page into strips that are ½-inch wide by 8-inches long (approximately). You need at least 4 strips this size.

2. Next, cut each strip in half on the diagonal so you now have 8 strips of paper – one end is squared off, one end is pointed. 3. Take a toothpick and one paper strip. Roll the squared-off end of the paper strip completely around the toothpick

just one time. Next, take the glue stick and lightly cover the remaining paper surface with glue. 4. TIGHTLY roll the paper strip around the toothpick all the way to the end. Smooth the tip/end of the paper strip in

place. Next, slip the paper “bead” off the toothpick. (It should slide off easily because you wrapped the end of your paper strip around the toothpick before you used the glue stick.)

5. Roll all 8 of your beads. 6. Polish your beads one at a time. Place one bead on a toothpick and coat with clear nail polish. TIP: stick the tooth-

picks containing the polished beads in a piece of Styrofoam to let them dry for about 5 minutes.   7. After the beads are dry, inspect each one and trim away any tiny paper tags that are not completely glued/sealed in place. 8. Organize your beads into a “stringing” order. Mix in a few silver or colored beads. 9. Take your elastic beading cord and triple knot one end.   1O. String the beads, tie to the other knotted end and trim the excess cord. Because the cord is elastic, the bracelet

will stretch to go on and off your wrist. OPTIONAL: Use a metal jewelry clasp on the end to fasten.
