STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

1. Assemble Bed Cabinet Components

• Open carton labelled Model #BC - Bed Cabinet

• Attach one 1" x 1" x 1 3/4" 6-hole assemble bracket to each end of the Kick, see Figure3. Place each remaining cabinet component on a hard, flat surface and, with a hammer, tap Rafix fittings (Figure 2) into all locations as shown in Figure 3. Use the four almond(or black) Rafix fittings (with the 1/8" holes) in the top of the Top Stretcher and securethese fittings through the holes using #8 x 3/4" panhead screws. Use the eight whitefittings in the back of the Headboard and Bottom Stretcher.

• Screw Rafix bolts into all six 5 mm holes on eachSide Panel.

• Attach components by pushing each joint togetherand hand tightening the Phillips screw in theRafix fitting until it locks (approximately one halfturn clock-wise). Arrange components so that thefittings will not be visible upon completion. Beginby placing a Side Panel on edge on the floor, front edge down, and attach the Top Stretcher.Move to other side and attach other Side Panel.Stay in the middle and attach one side ofHeadboard. Support the weight of the Headboarduntil you have attached the other side. AttachBottom Stretcher in a similar manner. Avoidbending partially assembled components as thejoints are not strong until the Unit is fullyassembled.

• If installing the Cabinet in a uncarpeted room, set the Kick 1-1/8" back from the front ofthe Cabinet and flush with the bottom of the Side Panels. In a carpeted room, set theKick 1-1/8" back from the front of the Cabinet and, to prevent bowing, raise it so that itsits slightly on top of the carpet. However under no circumstances raise the KICK morethan 1/4" or it will interfere with the operation of the bed.

2. Install Springs in Lift Mechanisms

• Open cartons labelled Model #BC - ABF or SBF Bed Mechanism

Model #BC - ABF or SBF Bed Frame

• The number of springs the Lift Mechanisms requires varies with the different weights ofmattresses and construction materials. Select the appropriate number from the chart.

As Figures 4 and 5 on the following pages show the Right Lift Mechanism, you shouldstart with that one.

• If you are installing an odd number of springs start at the centerline position shown inFigure 4. Numbering down from the top, the centerline runs through spring hole #5. Ifyou are installing an even number of springs start at hole #4 or #6, leaving hole #5vacant. Note that the hook ends of the springs have slightly different sized openings.Hook the end of the spring that has the smallest opening under the upturned edge of theMounting Plate. Lay the spring down and slide it under the matching hole in the TensionArm. Be sure to install the springs so that the hook openings face you, see Figure 4.

You may find it easier to fit the hooks under the Tension Arm if you pry up the ArmBracket with a wooden wedge or similar device.

• Continue by working out from the centre, alternating top and bottom, until you haveinstalled the required number of springs. Be sure that holes of the Mounting Platecorrespond to the holes in the Tension Arm.

Ideally, you should install an equal number of springs on each side of the centerline. However, an imbalance by one spring is all right, preferably with the extra spring onthe topside. The last spring installed should be #9, if required. See Figure 4.

• Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to install the springs in the Left Lift Mechanism.

Use the same number of springs and the same configuration on both Lift Mechanisms.

3. Mount Lift Mechanisms3. Mount Lift Mechanisms

• Insert a 5/16" x 1 1/4" flathead slot machine screw through hole "C" (see Figure 3) fromthe outside (countersunk) of the Right Side Panel and position the corresponding RightLift Mechanism hole, see Figure 5, over the screw. Loosely thread on a 5/16" plain hexnut.

Figure 5. Back view of the Right Lift Mechanism.

• Insert a similar screw through each of holes "A", "B" and "D". At hole "B" use a 5/16"x 7/8"(OD) flat washer and a 5/16" plain nut. At hole "D" thread only a nut on the screw.

Page 8: EASY to ASSEMBLE Complete Wall-Bed Cabinet

8

• At hole "A", use one of the hexagon cam washers (illustrated at the right)and a 5/16" plain hex nut. Locate the cam washer in the slot of the MountingPlate so that the larger part of the cam is upward, as in the illustration.

If you are adding a crown moulding, turn the hexagon cam washer 180( sothat the larger part is downward. This will ensure the correct top clearance.

• Tighten the four nuts evenly, making sure the hexagon cam washer does notrotate.

• Repeat steps 1 through 4 to attach the Left Lift Mechanism to the Left Side Panel.

4. Secure Bed Cabinet

• Remove the strip of baseboard where you wish to locate your Tilt-Away™ Bed Systemso that the back of the Bed Cabinet is flush against the wall. (Later you can trim andreplace the baseboard.) Place Cabinet against wall. If the floor is off-level or not squarewith wall, shim the bottom edges of the Cabinet. Do a preliminary check for squarenessby measuring diagonally from corner to corner across the face of the Cabinet. It is moreimportant that the Bed Cabinet be square rather than exactly level or plumb.

• Use a step ladder to access the wall above the Bed Cabinet and locate three studs orsome other solid structural members to which you can fasten the three 2" x 2" L Brackets, see Figure 6.

Figure 6. Securing the Cabinet.

ATTENTION! You must secure the Bed Cabinet to solid structural members and notmerely to the wall finish. If you are not attaching your bed to a wood stud wall, see yourlocal hardware store for metal stud screws or concrete 1 3/4" x 1/4" expansion bolts anda concrete drill bit. In either case, be careful not to hit electrical wiring or plumbingbehind drywall.

Drive two #8 x 2" flathead wood screws through each bracket and into each solid framingmember. Drive a single #8 x 3/4" flathead screw through the middle bracket and into theTop Stretcher then recheck the Cabinet for square as in Step 1. Adjust as is necessaryand drive five more #8 x 3/4" flathead screws through the brackets and into the TopStretcher.

• Peel off the backing and attach the Warning Label and three 1/4" round Bumper Buttons, see Figure 6.

5a. Option A - Elite Aliminum Bed Frame - ABF – To Assemble Bed Panel Unit

• Open carton labelled Model #BC - Bed Panels

The Bed Panel Unit consists of two Bed Panels, four Frames sections, a Stiffener, twoPanel Guards, two Leg Stops, four 4-hole Corner Brackets and six black Hole Plugs. The Frames and Stiffener have double-sided tape on their lower faces. This tape uses asuper-glue contact adhesive and is therefore almost impossible to move once it hastouched another surface. If you ordered and unfinished bed system, sand and clean theBed Panels but, in order to achieve maximum adhesion, do not apply a finish until youhave attached the Frames and Stiffener.

Do not remove the paper backing until you are ready to attach the piece with which youare working.

• Lay the Bed Panels face down on a blanket or carpet to protect their outer face. Place astrip of wood, approximately the width of the panels, underneath the head and foot endsto help keep the panel surfaces even. The Unit is designed so that there is a 1/16" spacebetween the Panels. Use the Panel Guards as spacers at both ends and lightly clamp ortape the Panels together without obstructing the areas where the Frames attach, seeFigure 7a.

• With the paper backing still on the tape, arrange the Frames as shown in Figure 7a. TheSide Frames are interchangeable. The Foot Frame is distinguished by its gold label.Make sure that the Head Frame is flush with the head end of the panels and located anequal distance (1") in from each side. Note that because of a 1/16" notching at theoutside corners of the Frames, the distance from the edge of the Side Frames to the edgeof the panels is 15/16". Be sure that all the Frames run parallel to the Panel edges, andthat the mitred corners fit snugly together.

• With a pencil, lightly outline the Frame positions on the Panel surfaces. Use an awl tomark the center of the screw holes at each end of each Frame, as well as at a couple ofother positions along the Frames. These center marks will serve as pilot holes for thescrews. (When marking the Side Frames leave the fourth hole from the foot end free forlater attachment of the Velcro straps.)

• Starting with the Head Frame, peel back about half the paper backing from the tape. Donot tear away the backing. Keep the exposed tape clear of the Bed Panels, and use apiece of 3/4"scrap wood to prop up the end still protected with the paper. Make sure thatthe Frame is aligned exactly to the Head End of the Bed Panels, then carefully removethe prop and lower the Frame so that the exposed tape adheres to the panel.

Page 10: EASY to ASSEMBLE Complete Wall-Bed Cabinet

Page 11: EASY to ASSEMBLE Complete Wall-Bed Cabinet

11

Drive a #8 x 3/4" panhead screw into the center-marked hole at that end.

IMPORTANT! If you are power driving the screws that attach the Frames and theStiffener, be extremely careful not to strip the screw holes. Stripping the holes willautomatically void the 10 year warranty on the Aluminum Bed Frame System. NEWERA MARKETING LTD. will not accept any liability for any accidents resulting fromimproper assembly or installation.

When attaching the Frames and Stiffener, we recommend that you power drive screwsonly part way and then tighten them by hand.

Move to the other end and flex the Frame sufficiently to remove the rest of the paperbacking. Carefully lower the frame onto the Panel. Drive in a screw at that end, then atthe previously marked holes. Center-mark the remaining screw-holes then drive in screwsto complete the attachment of the Head Frame.

• Repeat this procedure first with both Side Frames, then with the Foot Frame. Beforeaffixing the Side Frames you may wish to temporarily tack the Foot Frame in place witha couple of screws (leave the paper backing on). When driving in the Side Frame screws, leave open the fourth hole from the foot end.

• Attach the Velcro straps to the Side Frames (four holes from the foot end) using 3/16" x3/4"(OD) flat washers and #8 x 3/4" panhead screws. Make sure that the Velcro "hooks"and "loops" face each other.

• Position the left and right Panel Guards against the outer ends of the Head Frame so thatthe bent tab sits on the inner surface of the corner of the Panels. See the enlarged detailin Figure 7a. Hold loosely in place by inserting 3/16" x 1/2" black trusshead Phillipsscrews through the top two holes of the Panel Guard and through the Head Frame'scorner holes.

• Insert a 3/16" x 1 1/4" black flathead Phillips screw through each of the Leg Stops andthrough the lower corner hole at the foot end of the Side Frames (see Figure 11).

• Fit a 4-hole Corner Bracket inside each corner and secure using 3/16" x 1/2" blackflathead Phillips screws in all remaining corner holes and 3/16" Nylock hexagon nuts.Locate all screw-heads on the outside of the Frames.

• Without removing the tape's paper backing, lay the Stiffener along the 1/16" gap betweenthe two Bed Panels, so that it overlaps the joint equally (1 15/32") on both sides and iscentered between the Head and Foot Frames. Mark the location with a pencil and use anawl to center-mark each end-hole. Remove the paper backing and lower the Stiffenerinto place. Use an awl to center-mark the remaining holes then attach with #8 x 3/4"panhead screws and don't strip the holes.

• The final step in assembling the Bed Panel Unit is to install the six 5/16" black HolePlugs in the three unused 5/16" holes at the foot end of each Side Frame (see Figures 7a& 11). To prevent accidental displacement of the plugs, push them in tightly and anchorthem with a dab of silicone around the plug-ends on the inside of the Frames.

5b. Option B - Supreme Steel Bed Frame - SBF – To Assemble Bed Panel Unit

• The Bed Panel Unit consists of two BED PANELS, four steel Frames sections, two Stiffeners, two Panel Guards (optional Bag #9), two leg stops, four 4-hole Corner Brackets.

• Lay the BED PANELS face down on a blanket or carpet to protect their outer face. Place a stripof wood, approximately the width of the panels, underneath the head and foot ends to help keepthe panel surfaces even. The Unit is designed so that there is a 1/16” space between the Panels.Use coins, etc. as spacers at both ends and tape the panels together without obstruction the areaswhere the Frames attach, see Figure 7b.

• Completely assemble the 4 steel Frame sections - 2 interchangeable side frames, onehead frame and one foot frame distinguished by its gold label - using the four cornerbrackets and 3/16” x 1/2” and 1 1/4” black screws - See Figure 7b & 11. Be sure themitred corners fit snugly together

• Position the BED FRAME on the BED PANELS with the HEAD FRAME sectionflush to the head end of the BED PANELS. Ensure the SIDE FRAMES run parallel tothe side of the BED PANELS and are equal distance (15/16”) from the panel edges.Tack the BED FRAMES into place inserting two screws in each frame.

HELPFUL HINT! It is very important the BED FRAME is centered on theBED PANELS.

• The two STEEL STIFFENERS are fabricated to overlap each side frame (for extrastrength) are provided for double and queen beds and should be spaced to divide theBED PANELS in three equal sections. Tack the STIFFENERS in place with twoscrews.

• Once confirmed the FRAME and STIFFENERS are square and properly placed on theBED PANELS insert the balance of the screws. Attach the Velcro straps about 18”from the foot of the bed using the 3/16” x 3/4” washer and #8 x 3/4” panhead screw.Ensure the Velcro loops and hooks face each other.

IMPORTANT! When attaching the FRAMES and STIFFENERS, we recommend thatyou power drive screws only part way and then tighten by hand.

6. Install Bed Panel Unit

The Bed Panel Unit connects to the Cabinet via the Lift Mechanism Tension Arms. Youwill need someone to help you both set the Arms and lift the Panel Unit into place.

• Insert the two Allen key sockethead bolts from the outside of the Side Frames throughthe #1 holes at the head end of the Bed Panel Unit. Attach 5/16" Nylock hex nuts oneach bolt end and tighten securely. Now insert two 5/16" x 3/4" hexhead machine boltsfrom the outside of the Side Frames through the #3 holes. Place a 5/16" Nylock nut oneach bolt end, threading the nut only until it is flush with the bolt end. Pull the two #3bolt heads outward so that you have at least a 1/4" space between them and the outsideof the Frames.

• Put a 5/16" x 1 1/4" hexhead bolt and a 5/16" Nylock nut by the base of each Side Panel.

Figure 8. Setting the Tension Arm. Enlarged detail shows the Arm set securely againstthe hexagon nut.

IMPORTANT! Before arming mechanism make sure KICK is securely attached.

• Brace one foot against the front edge of the Side Panel and, using the 13" length of PVCtubing provided, lever the Lift Mechanism Tension Arm out and down until you cansecure the Arm Lock to the hexagon nut you installed at Hole "A". See Figure 8 (previouspage). Be sure that the Arm Lock is secured against the hexagon nut before releasing thetension on the pipe lever. Repeat the operation on the other side.

CAUTION! There will be a lot of tension on the Tension Arm. We recommend that twopeople handle this procedure - one pulling and holding the Tension Arm with both handswhile the other sets the Arm Lock. When setting the Arm Lock, avoid reaching behindthe Tension Arm.

Page 15: EASY to ASSEMBLE Complete Wall-Bed Cabinet

15

Figure 9. Installing the Bed Panel Unit.

• Slip both wrenches into your back pocket then, with you and your assistant on eitherside of the Bed Panel Unit, lift the foot end so that the unit rests vertically on its headend. Align it between, and just in front of, the Tension Arms. Do not bump the TensionArms lest the Lock Arms slip off the hex nuts.

Now lift the unit vertically to a height where the bolts in holes #3 are a couple of inchesabove the top of the Tension Arms, see Figure 9 (previous page). Gently fit the unitbetween the Arms, tilt it back approximately 10° so that the head end of the unit clearsthe Kick, then lower it so that the #3 bolts slide into the slots at the ends of the Arms. Besure the bolts seat at the bottom of the slots. Slowly tilt the panel unit back just enoughto allow the #1 Allen bolts to be fully seated in the notches at the bottom of the mechanism, see Figure 10.

Figure 10. The Bed Panel Unit in place. It will hold this position but is not secure untilthe #2 hole bolt is in place and all nuts tightened securely.

Page 16: EASY to ASSEMBLE Complete Wall-Bed Cabinet

16

• Continue to tilt the panel unit outward to an angle of about 45°, during which action youwill hear a click as the Arm Locks disengage. Hold the bed at roughly this angle andinstall the #2 bolts and Nylock nuts. Still holding the panel unit at this angle, tightensecurely the #2 and #3 nuts.

• Holding the upper edge of the panel unit, gently let the bed close. If all is well, youshould have even clearance between the side edges of the panel unit and the insides ofthe Side Panels. If the Cabinet is not square and the Bed Panel Unit binds, try one orboth of the following adjustments:

1) nudge the Bed Cabinet along the floor, pushing from the base of the Side Panel;

2) shim (or reshim) the bottom of the Side Panels.

7. Attach Handles & Legs, Install Mattress & Mechanism Covers

NOTE: To give you flexibility in handle or knob placement. The BED FACE PANELSare now drilled from the back side to within 1/8” of the front of the panels. This givescorrect positionfor our stock handles, or you may dril custom holes.

Remember when drilling through your panels, to clamp a scrap piece of plywood to theface side. this will prevent chipping or tearing to the visible faces.

• Attach handles to the face of the Bed Panel Unit using the screws provided with thehandles.

• OPTION A - Elite Aluminum Bed Frame SystemPull the panel unit open to a convenient working height. Remove the 5/16" Nylockhexagon nuts and the 5/16" x 1 1/2"(OD) flat washers from the legs, leaving the thinblack plastic washers in place. Insert the leg-screws through the frames, replace thewashers and nuts and tighten the nuts.

• OPTION B - Supreme Steel Bed Frame SystemPull the panel unit open to a convenient working height. Remove the 5/16" Nylockhexagon nuts and the 5/16" x 1 1/2"(OD) black flat washers and 3/4" x 1 1/2" (OD)washers from the legs, leaving the black plastic washers in place. Insert the leg-screwsthrough the frames, replace the washers 3/4" x 1 1/2" then the 5/16" x 1 1/2" blackwashers and finally the nuts which are to be tightened.

• Pivot both legs upward and position the crossbar between the legs. Place a1/4" x 1/2"(OD) star washer on one of the 1/4" x 3/4" hexhead machine screws, threadthe screw through the leg-hole and screw into the crossbar, see Figure 11. Repeat processon other side.

Page 17: EASY to ASSEMBLE Complete Wall-Bed Cabinet

17

Figure 11. Installing the Legs & Crossbar. Viewed is the Right Leg.

• Attach the two 3/8" flat Bumper Buttons to the surface of the Bed Panels where the legs, when folded up, would contact the Panels, see Figure 11. Gently close the bed.

To avoid denting the front edge of the Top Stretcher, be sure the Legs are folded upbefore closing the bed.

• Have the mattress on hand. Open the bed, fold down the legs and hold the bed fully openby placing one foot on the Crossbar. Put the mattress in place. Be sure it lies completelywithin the Frame. The added weight of the mattress should now hold the bed down.

Note: Using a thin coil or light-density foam mattress less than 9" thick may require areduction in the number of springs required to balance the bed. You also may feel theStiffener through the mattress. Should this be the case, the remedy is a simple one! Fillthe spaces between the Stiffener and the Frames with 3/4" to 1" Styrofoam or Foamboard, both of which are very light and will not affect the balance of the bed.

• Clip the black plastic Mechanism Covers on each Lift Mechanism so that the tabs hookinto the indents on the back plates. Secure with the four 4 mm x 1/4" flathead slotmachine screws.

• Trim the Velcro straps so that they overlap a minimum of 12" and lightly singe the looseends with a match to seal the nylon. The bed will close fully made up with the strapsholding the pillows in place. If you installed the correct number of springs in the LiftMechanisms, the bed should float at an angle of approximately 45°.

IMPORTANT! Before using the bed, allow at least 24 hours (from the time you attachedthe Frames and Stiffener to the Bed Panels) for the adhesive tape to cure properly.

If you did not order Side Cabinets skip this section.

• Open carton(s) labelled Model #SC - Side Cabinet. The basic Side Cabinet consists oftwo Side Panels, one Top, one Bottom, one Kick, one fixed shelf, three adjustable shelvesand one Bag of Side Cabinet Hardware.

• Attach one 1" x 1" x 1 3/4" 6-hole assemble bracket to each end of the Kick. Tap thealmond (or black) Rafix fittings (with the 1/8" holes) into the Top and secure with#8 x 3/4" panhead screws. Tap white Rafix fittings into other locations.

• Insert the two-piece grommets into the holes of the Top, Bottom and all shelves. Theseholes allow wiring for lights, etc.

• Screw Rafix bolts into both Side Panels in the eight holes marked "A", see Figure 12.Screw in four Rafix bolts into the 15th line of holes at location "B" (this is the fixedshelf location). If you ordered a Side Cabinetwithout any accessories, you may install thefixed shelf in any central location.

• Assemble the components so that, uponcompletion, the fittings do not show and allthe grommeted holes are toward the back.Attach the Kick so that it is set back 1/4" fromthe front edge of the bottom component. Avoidbending partially assembled components as thejoints are not strong until the Unit is fullyassembled.

• Move the Side Cabinet(s) into place, shim asnecessary so that there is no gap between theBed Cabinet and the Side Cabinet(s) thensecure the Side Cabinet(s) to framing membersusing one 2" x 2" L bracket per unit. Followthe same procedure that you used to secure theBed Cabinet (see Section 4).

9. Assemble Accessories9.1 Bed Cabinet Crown Molding
